Nikki is correct. It's the pronunciation files that will slow it down. You can force it to the next slide faster by pressing your mouse button to cut out empty noise, but then you'd still at least need to wait for the pronunciation to finish.
The other idea is to record very quick pronunciation versions, or edit the audio files to make them much faster/shorter. We've been thinking about that, actually, but that's a bit of work. One day we will have a feature in Reader that will automatically play back the sound faster (but don't hold your breath for it...
)

Just read your reply, Martina. Are you using auto-forward? If so, have you tried the fastest speed setting? If not, for now, I suggest you manually forward the slides. And please let me know which Category so I can check it out.
