For those of you who have been trying out the LR Curriculum, can you give us some feedback as to whether you think the Word Flash lesson (Lesson A.) is too long, based on your child's attention span.

Right now, it runs through 6 words of each of the 3 Categories, totaling 18 words.  I'm thinking of cutting it down to half the length (3 words each, meaning 9 words in total).  All words will still get covered evenly over the course of the days, except they get shown less times.  This might be better in keeping the child's attention long enough before the much more popular Multisensory lessons start.

Please give me your feedback if you can, and let me know your child's age.

Thanks very much!

Hi KL,

My baby is 8 and a half months and I do think the lesson is a bit too long. I have been pointing underneath the words to keep her attention. I think 9 or 12 words may be a good number.

Hope this helps!  smile

PS. You are right, my dd loves the multisensory lesson, the phonics not so much...

KL,

Mine is almost 11 months old. Yeah my baby does not have the patience to sit through word flash fully most of the times...But I feel that could be due to the repetition of the same words..I feel the curriculum is little slower by going over the old words repeatedly. The same goes for multisensory too. I was thinking what to do about it and you asked this question...

Rgds,

Gabriel is 21 months old, and he pays attention to it pretty well. After all, it is the first thing they see, and it goes fast.

DD is 15 months, and sits through the word flash pretty well - seems to enjoy it, too, so much so that we sometimes do 2 lessons back to back (although have never tested her!)

My son is 17 months old and depending on the time of day or what may be lying by the computer to distract him (he LOVES his "later" - calculator) he rarely looks at the screen for the entire time.  It seems that he watches the words or series of words that he knows and disregards the new ones.

Also, on another note...If I may suggest, my personal thoughts are to show the pictures of the items first, then the word flash so that the child has a picture of the particular word in their head before they see the printed word...

Hallo

Wanika is 16 months and the Word Flash and Phonics doesn't hold her attention for too long, but the multisensory does.

Cheers,

my girl is almost 6.5, she would do better with less words, and less repetitions, like you have suggested, oddly enough her favourite seem to be phonics, more then multisensory. I think she is getting a bit bored with some of the words being repeated too many times over the course of curriculum. So introducing more new words and keeping the lessons shorter I think will be better

My DD is now 19 months old.  Her reaction to her first lesson in LR curriculum was “Where? Where?” referring to the missing pictures in Word Flash as she was so used to seeing pictures after words.  I think it has been about 2 months since we’ve started on LR curriculum and she still has the same reaction every LR session. The same goes with the Phonics.  I continue to show her all of the lessons but she just looks away during the Word Flash and Phonics, and sometimes even when words are being shown during Multisensory.  As she refuses to see anything without pictures, I’m not sure cutting the number of words in Word Flash (or Phonics) will help.  Is there any other way to get her to look at the screen during Word Flash and Phonics?  BTW, I don’t think her attention span is a problem as she can sits through more than 6 categories in one go and still asks for more, provided that they are things that interest her.

My Muna is 21 months now, and she also usually looks around during the word flash, I am trying to keep her attention by running my finger under the words, but not always successful. However, it does serve as a warm-up for her and she has more attention for the multisensory part and phonics part (provided I run my finger under it and sound it out togather with the computer). She is not very much interested in the picture flash part though, I guess it is because she knows most of the words and objects already and can say the words as well. I do agree with those suggesting to move through the curriculum faster. I see my daughter is getting bored also when same words are repeated for so many times. However, overall, she still loves LR and LM.

My daughter looks away alot during the word flash.  She is 27 months old and is very active and wants to do everything her way and by herself.  Also she had done some of the words previously with other LR playlists and YBCR.  She is also showing less interest in other LR playlists.  She looks down at the keyboard and pretends to be typing instead.  I'm hoping it might just be a phase.  She likes the multisensory parts the best especially the animal sounds.  We are only up day 8 because we don't use it everyday.  We use a combination of different educational stuff.  I tread a fineline between boring her with repetition and confusing her with lots of different materials.  Overall we are in a tough spot because it is hard to capture her interest now.  I just keep telling myself that it is all play to her.  Even if she is barely paying attention to the words, it is better than cluttering her brain with commercials and Spongebob Squarepants dialogue.  Anyway sorry for my long rambling reply.

Thank you everyone for your replies!

There's a lot of food for thought there.  These are my observations and comments:

- I would like to cut down the Word Flash list by half.  Maybe the picture flash too (to be consistent)

- There is a difference in receptivity depending on the age of the child, and our curriculum has to be able to cater to the under-one-year olds, where repetition is more important.

- There's also a difference depending on whether the child has seen those words before.  I note that many of you are previous LR users so the child would have seen many of the words before already.

In any event, it is clear that we need flexibility as to the speed at which the curriculum progresses, and this is something that we are working on for v2.

In the meantime, here are some suggestions:

1. Skip word flash for one or both of the sessions.

2. Progress at double the speed by skipping Session 2, and instead playing the next day's Session 1 lesson as Session 2.

3. Skip Categories which are already familiar to your child, or use the mouse to manually skip familiar words and dwell more on new words.

4. Switch all word flash words to UPPER CASE.

KL,

Thanks for the advice.  I'm going to try double speed for awhile until the material seems mostly new.  Despite being inattentive, she seems to enjoy the lessons.  Last night, I muted the speaker, Sarah read nearly all of the words outloud herself.  I thought of just skipping ahead but then we will miss some words and it might be confusing once we get up to pattern phonics and couplets.  Double speed is a much better solution for awhile.  I really like the curriculum.  I wondered how I was going to introduce phonics, couplets, sentences, etc.  The curriculum will lead us thru all the stages of reading without any worries.

Thanks Again, Lori
