So if someone wants to really follow Doman's recomendation for teaching reading - Little Math is really great for it!
You can so easily and quickly create words and attach sounds to it if you wish to. And you do not have to watch what is the oldest word to retire! And you can so easily retire and add new words! It gives your teaching great schedule that is so easy to follow.

Hi Pupisek,  Can you elaborate on why you don't have to watch the oldest word to retire in LM? How do you know which is the oldest?  Thank you for your other ideas on using LR.

Hi norcalmommy,
In Little Math there is a number (word) set of 100 words. SO I guess you understand you create new set of words by retyping pre-defined English numbers with words you want to show. (If you prefer to record sounds and upload them  to relating "number sounds" do so). And then, you create a preset: You choose "your" word set (and you choose "your" sound set, if you recorded one) and every day you just change which words to play by choosing which "numbers" to play. So if you decide to play for example 5 words, you choose play 1 to 5. After you decide it is time to "add new one and retire old world", you just choose playing 2 to 6. Next day you would choose 3 to 7 etc. You can create as many word set as you wish and show them to your child the same day (as Doman recommends). You just need to wisely choose the words when creating the word categories...
So retiring and adding will be done automatically by choosing which "number" to play.
I hope it is understandable.
If not, feel free to let me know. smile

Thank you everyone.
I am just surprised that it is not obvious for others that Little Math can be used this way.. I have already mentioned it in many other threads .....  blush  May be it is because the first thing I did was creating new word set and sound set of Czech numbers and I saw how easy it is to do so.... Wink
I am really glad I helped you. I will anytime I can.  smile
I always like things that make living(and teaching) more effective and usefull, I like things to be organised. And having a schedule to follow with easy system is the best thing to keep beeing consistent. I can not really be very consistent without a schedulle...  Sad  And Little Math is just great for it.
I am really looking forward to improved version of Little Reader so I can use it effectively as well.  yes

I would like to check if LR have the function where by say I have to play this 10sets and each set I am able to set the no of times I want it to be played. eg: words only-15times, words n pic 30times. And when I had played this no of times it will prompt me to retire this set.
And also is there a place that I can gather all the sets together so that I can just play them without searching. or do I create a new folder and put all the sets I want to play?

Hi Pupisek,
after reading your post, I think I should get LM as well.
Thanks for sharing.

Dear Pupisek,

Until I acquire LM - how do I set up something similar in LR?  I am learning how to use LR because I was solving technical production issues for .ppt .

Or perhaps it is a feature unique to LM.  But even so - what is the best way to track the number of times you have shown a word and/or set?  I thought about adding the date to the word file name but I am creating stuff in advance so that is not working for me at the moment.

Ohhhhhhhhhhh - there has to be a simple way to add/retire words from word sets/categories everyday?!?

Sorry, I do not really know about any other way how to easily retire and add words then the one (not really effective one) that I described above. But as said many times, Little Reader WILL have this great feature as well. In meantime - for those who wants to follow strictly teaching method of Glenn Doman I would definitely recommend Little Math.  LOL I know it sounds funny because Little Math was created for teaching mathg (and it is so great for it as well!!!) but it is just so great for teaching ALSO reading as Doman says!!!! I know, it is not the multisensory method with pictures, but following strictly Doman recomendation from his teaching book - you would not show pictures anyway...  Wink

Dear Pupisek & Everyone,

Thank you for your patience with my persistence on this.  I am trying to set up in LR by creating a category called "Step 1 Individual Words Master List" with my words.  Then I will create a daily set of 3 or 5 categories in which I put the 5 words per set and then on the 6th day, will retire include a new word and retire a word . . .

Sort of what is described in the comments by Alenka for .ppt here:

#  Alenka Says:
February 1, 2009 at 8:33 am

Thank you for your kind words! They really mean a lot to me!!!

After showing your 25 words for 5 days you don’t have to retire all 25. You retire just five words and add five new ones. Daily. Here is an example: I have a set of five words for my baby
- apple
- milk
- bread
- carrot
- banana
I am showing these words for 5 days, 3x a day. At the beginning of the next week, I retire just one word (let’s say, a word “banana”), and add a new one, so the set looks like this:
- apple
- milk
- bread
- carrot
NEW: soup
My baby is happy to see old words (someone just recently mentioned that her baby loved old words so much, this mom ended up with two piles - the baby got very upset when any old words would disappear) and even happier - for a surprise: a new word (”soup”)!

I show these words 3x on Monday. On Tuesday I retire another old word (”carrot”) and add another new one, so my set looks like this:
- apple
- milk
- bread
- soup
NEW: butter

So, similarly, on Wednesday my set will look like this:
- apple
- milk
- soup
- butter
NEW: cereal

By the end of the week, all the words from week 1 would be replaced and the baby will start getting familiar with the 5 new words! So you just continue like this adding one/removing one from each set and adjusting your sets according to your baby’s interest.

I will have to create a listing of five daily sets/categories with the words that are needed for each day already in the set; as opposed to physically adding/retiring a word to each category set - I will just set up that way in the beginning which is a little long, but it will work - like in the following schedule:

Day 1 Set 1 - words 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Day 1 Set 2 - words 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
Day 1 Set 3 - words 11, 12, 13, 14, 15
Day 1 Set 4 - words 16, 17, 18, 19, 20
Day 1 Set 5 - words 21, 22, 23, 24, 25

Day 2 Set 1 - words 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Day 2 Set 2 - words 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
Day 2 Set 3 - words 11, 12, 13, 14, 15
Day 2 Set 4 - words 16, 17, 18, 19, 20
Day 2 Set 5 - words 21, 22, 23, 24, 25

Day 3 Set 1 - words 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Day 3 Set 2 - words 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
Day 3 Set 3 - words 11, 12, 13, 14, 15
Day 3 Set 4 - words 16, 17, 18, 19, 20
Day 3 Set 5 - words 21, 22, 23, 24, 25

Day 4 Set 1 - words 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Day 4 Set 2 - words 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
Day 4 Set 3 - words 11, 12, 13, 14, 15
Day 4 Set 4 - words 16, 17, 18, 19, 20
Day 4 Set 5 - words 21, 22, 23, 24, 25

Day 5 Set 1 - words 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Day 5 Set 2 - words 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
Day 5 Set 3 - words 11, 12, 13, 14, 15
Day 5 Set 4 - words 16, 17, 18, 19, 20
Day 5 Set 5 - words 21, 22, 23, 24, 25

Day 6 Set 1 - retire word 1; continue words 2, 3, 4, 5, add word 26
Day 6 Set 2 - retire word 6; continue words 7, 8, 9, 10; add word 27
Day 6 Set 3 - retire word 11; continue words 12, 13, 14, 15; add word 28
Day 6 Set 4 - retire word 16; continue words 17, 18, 19, 20; add word 29
Day 6 Set 5 - retire word 21; continue words 22, 23, 24, 25; add word 30

Day 7 Set 1 - retire word 2; continue words 3, 4, 5, 6, 26; add word 31
Day 7 Set 2 - retire word 7; continue words 8, 9, 10, 27; add word 32
Day 7 Set 3 - retire word 12; continue words 13, 14, 15, 28; add word 33
Day 7 Set 4 - retire word 17; continue words 18, 19, 20, 29; add word 34
Day 7 Set 5 - retire word 22; continue words 23, 24, 25, 30; add word 35

Day 8 . . .etc.and work through my 200 words

Then form couplets with the same type of scenario but it goes faster because it is 2 sets of 5 couplets only . . .  etc. and work through the steps.

I feel that I am on the very edge of my own little breakthrough and will struggle through it.  I will just have to map it out; try it and see.

Thanks.

Hi Ayesha,
I might not be the best person to give advise as I just started on Doman method. I retire the whole set of words instead of 1 word fr each set as easier to keep track. I feel that as long as I showed 15times it's alright. Of course if LR can do it will be the best.
Right now I am using excel to keep track of the physical flash cards and print out the excel format for the power point or for LR.  The reason being it is easier to print out the excel if I show something in the computer esp I am using the Eng reading programme format that comes w day 1 - 30. So I stick e paper on top of my pc for easy reference.

Hi Aysha, would you be willing to use Little Math for teaching reading (if you want to retire and add daily) in mentime if you had licence of Little Math? It would just save you so much time and energy that you can spend preparing other materials or to be with your baby.... I am so sorry to see you strugling. I can help you by giving you points you need to get a free copy of Little Math so you can start reading program with easy retiring... You may give the points back to me later... Do you want me to send you the points or would your prefer to figure out the way of retiring words in Little Reader? Please let me know. Martina

Dear Everyone,

I am sooo happy to have FINALLY completed my LR/Doman Step 1 Word plan/schedule.  Please find it attached.  I will create the individual word files in LR and then set up categories named "Day 1 Set 1" with the corresponding words in it and continue through "Day 44 Set 5".  I will print out the planning sheet to make sure that I stay on track everyday, as well as remind myself to use the words frequently and interactively in conversations with my children.

Then I will create couplet sets for LR next.  Stay tuned.

Yipppeeeeeeeee!

karma, karma, karma to you Ayesha,
this REALLY helped me, i am a visual person but at the same time I have computer-o-phobia . Your excel sheet was sooo easy to understand and to implement. I have completed about half of my words with Doman flashcards and am not goign to use LR. But I always keep my sheet handy . Now I am inspired by you and wii use excel and make things easier on me. (i need to have my paper copy, even if I am using LR palylists)

Dear Saniso & Everyone,

I am glad it helped you.  I also am not as computer literate as most and needed it in order to help me create categories and daily playlists in LR and I hope it will help you with the same.  LR is so much easier than making paper cards and/or creating many .ppt.

If you need help with LR, just ask and many people here will assist you.  It really is easy!  And fun once you understand how to use it.
