First, of course I'm going to be biased when answering this question.
You should note that LR and PPT have different objectives in mind, and therefore they are very different in many ways.
If all you want to do is to show STATIC (unchanging) lessons, then PPT will probably do a good enough job, and in some respects (like adding pictures) you will definitely find it easier to do so with PPT.
The reason LR requires more effort is because you can (and should!) add many more pictures and media to associate with one word. This will make it so that every time you play back a lesson, i'ts never exactly the same. And THIS is how babies and young children get more engaged in the lessons - each time it's different! We've heard from many parents saying how their child anticipates which 'horse' is going to show up next time, for example.
The same is true for font styles and colors. You will actually see this in full display with the new system and how we've designed the curriculum. And many many more differences to be mentioned (some which you've already noted, like pointer). For more, see here:
http://www.brillkids.com/little-reader/little-reader-advantages.php?g=top#workNevertheless, you will also see LR becoming easier to use with v2 later this year, where we'll support drag and drop picture adding, among other new features.
Hope that helps.
