How to create a .CAT file or .PL file or 'WORD File'?

Hi,

I would like to add my own  Category file called Kitchen, where i'd like to share with my children daily usable items like Spoons, Fork, Plate, Sink, Tap, Stove, Microwave etc. I have collected some nice .gif pictures. Now, How do i create a Kitchen.cat file with them?

I may even upload them for other parents to download and use...

Hi Anushyam!

I'm very happy to know you're going to be creating new category files!  You're one step ahead of me, as I am currently in the process of making the HOW TO tutorials for Little Reader!

Let me just enumerate the steps for you:


ADD a Category
From the Word Library Menu, choose to display CATEGORY. 
Click on NEW, type the name of your new category ("Kitchen"), then press the ENTER on your keyboard.

ADD a word to a Category
From the Word Library Menu, highlight the category you want to add a word to.
On the File column click on NEW.
This will open the New Word Menu.

First, type in a filename - they must begin with a letter and can contain numbers. You can't include spaces - but you can use the underscore character to separate words. (ex. kitchen_stove)
Next, write down the word as you want it to appear on the playback on the word blank space.

To add pronunciation - In the pronunciation section, click on +NEW.  Locate the recording file on your computer.  Press open.
To add picture - To add the picture for brother, Click on NEW. Look for your chosen image in your computer, and select OK to add it in.

The same procedures go for adding videos and sound FX.  When you’re all don editing your word, remember to click on SAVE.

That's all!  Let me know how it goes!

Hey there Lappy -
Just wanted you to know that I have already added a body parts category - and it went very smoothly.  I added pictures and words for head, eyes, nose, mouth, and tongue so far.  It works great during playback (I haven't added any pronunciation yet as I haven't yet figured out sound files/ how to record them on my computer), but it's a start.  I did attempt to export it so that you all would have access to it if it would be a useful category for others.  It seemed like the export was successful...I just have no idea where it exported the category file to??  Did it happen to reach you?? You'll have to let me know when you get a chance.  Thanks much - I really had a good time making the new category!!

Just played around on the site a bit more and realized where I can go to add a download...I will plan to do this with the body parts category I've been working on - but maybe will wait to do this until after I've had a chance to add the pronunciations and a few more "parts"  :tongue2:  - now that you've been so kind to explain that process to us! Thanks again.

Aww Leanna  just glad to help!

One thing though - when you exported the file - make sure you click on exporting all the media components (that "include media files on the left part of the export screen) so you'll be sure to pack all of your goodies in your exported category!

Your exported file is still in your PC though - You can find it by following this map 

  MY DOCUMENTS
                    L BRILLKIDS
                                   L LITTLE READER
                                                         L IMPORT-EXPORT

All of your exported Little Reader Playlists and Categories will be there by default.

And here's how to share them with us:

1.  Go to the Forums
2.  Click on File Downloads
3.  Click on Little Reader Library Files
4.  At the bottom of the list, click on ADD A DOWNLOAD.

Here's a few tips on "uploading" or adding a download:
 - For the Title, make sure you specify if its a playlist or a category. 
          ex. Category - Body Parts
 - For Description, please enumerate the words you included in your set.
          ex. .CAT file contains images, pronunciation files and sound effects, and video for the following words:
                    - head
                    - legs
                    - arms
 - For keywords, just leave it blank.  I'll edit and approve all downloads and I will put in keywords that will help other people who may be looking for the words you made get to your download file.

5. Click on BROWSE.  Look for your exported category or playlist in your computer (refer to the map above) and click OK.

6. After all that click on ADD DOWNLOAD.

Your download will begin shortly after.    Don't worry if it seems like the page isn't changing for a few seconds to a minute - it just means that the uploading is taking a while, so don't stop or refresh your browser.  When the uploading is done, the page will automatically change itself and you will see a screen that shows you your upload history (all the files you've ever uploaded).

AND THAT'S IT!  GOOD LUCK!

Thanks for the specifics on the exporting process - I'll maybe give it a go a bit later!
I did click on all of the media components  , but you're right - it is still in the "holding cell" on my PC 
I decided to wait to upload it until I could add sound.  I used the sound recorder option on my computer (by the way, your instructions for that piece were very clear and easy to follow) to add a pronunciation for one of the words (but I don't have an external mic- so the quality was pretty poor  )
Mayhaps I'll just add it to the downloads - just to have the experience of adding one??  - and I'll let others worry about add the sound clips.  Hope that's okay!

No sound clips is absolutely OK!! I would encourage everyone to start adding stuff, sound clips or not.  Who knows, we may even help you add them!

okay, I just added a .cat file for body parts - please know that it was just a rough first attempt - but very fun nonetheless!  I resorted to using pics that I already had of my son's body parts  - reason #1 - I think he will enjoy seeing his own parts  and reason #2: it is so hard to find appropriate pictures on the internet (that are free - okay, I'm frugal!).  The pics that are already in the category files in the Little Reader are so great - mayhaps you all have access to body parts pics that can be added that would be much more clear - where did all the pics come from?  (or is that not info that can be shared?) Thanks!

btw, if anyone uploads something, please drop a note here, because uploads need to be approved, and you can quicken the process if you let us know that you've uploaded something.

And lastly, once uploaded and approved, if you click on the DOWNLOAD button on your Little Reader, you will see it listed there for everyone to see! Which is why the first item now is lawrencelb's Body Parts!

A great way to find pictures of anything is to google the word. Look at the blue bar running accross the top of the result page--it should say images. If you click images you will get pages and pages of pictures to look through!
