How to Record your Own Voice for Little Reader

Hallo, Lappy,
thank you very much for your kind assistance. I was just going to ask a question about adding a new word to the Family category and it's not there, when i saw the answer! Thanx again. However, I have another question, which I think others might have also. It is regarding adding pronunciation. The procedure seems easy, but what program can be used to prerecord the word? Could you, please, give me some guidence on that. Thank you very much in advance.

Hi Leana! Glad you asked that question... wow, our new users are all beginning to be experts at using Little Reader and I'm really happy about this!  :educated:

Here's what you need to do to record your own voice for Little Reader:

1.  You need a working microphone for your computer.  If you have a headset with a microphone, this will do just fine.
2.  You need to open Sound Recorder in your PC.  I'm assuming you're using a Windows-based computer, and they all come with a Sound Recorder program (it's just that not a lot of people use it!)
 - Click on START on your taskbar.
 - Click on ALL PROGRAMS - ACCESSORIES - ENTERTAINMENT
 - Lastly, click on Sound Recorder.
3. This will open a very simple sound recorder on your computer.  Make sure your microphone is plugged in already.
4. Click on the RECORD button to begin recording.

That's it!  You can now record all the words, phrases and yes - even stories - that you want!

That's great advice - I didn't even know that Windows came with a sound recorder!!  :ugly:

Actually, if you're going to be the one using Little Reader with your child all the time anyway, and you're happy with your own pronunciation , I would simply not use any pre-recorded pronunciations and read the words out myself most of (or even all) the time.  It's much more stimulating for the child to hear a 'live' voice, and it would encourage more parent/child interaction that way.

To turn off the pre-existing pronunciations, just make sure the "Pronunciation ON" box is UNCHECKED.

However, we would still encourage users to record themselves and add new words/categories/playlists to the File Download library!

I just read this topic right after I posted a message to you about making a body parts category but not having figured out how to record pronunciations for the words.  Now I know!  Who knew that my computer already had this technology??  I was just telling my husband that I was going to have to go buy this digital voice recorder I've been wanting...hmm, looks like my excuse to buy it is gone...

I was trying to customize my list and I don't know how to add the pronunciation.  My child calls my husband and I Mamma and Pappa instead of Mommy and Daddy.  I've had a difficult time trying to change this. Anyone have any suggestions on how to add the pronuciation sound to a new file?

We're coming up with a tutorial on how to use these basic functions, but in the meantime, be sure to check the manual/help file, which you can access by pressing the HELP button on your Little Reader main menu.

In brief, you can follow these steps:

1. Go to the Word Library screen
2. Where it says "Display" (near the top left), make sure "Categories" is selected in the drop-down menu
3. In the middle panel window, select the word you want to edit (eg., Mommy), and press the EDIT button below (or you can simply double-click on the word)
4. You will see the Edit Word dialogue box.  At the top, is the pronunciation section.  Select the current pronunciation file, and click EDIT on the right. Then select the sound file you recorded yourself to replace it.
5. To change "Mommy" to "Mamma" etc., just edit the word which is displayed on the top-right of that screen.
6. Do the same for pictures, videos, and Sound FX.

Unless it really bothers you and your husband being called mommy and daddy, I wouldn't fret over it too much.  Your baby must have heard the words somewhere to have picked them up.  Besides, as s/he grows older you will be able to correct it.  The  I think at the moment is that s/he recognises who is who and is able to call for one of you when in need.
