Tons of history, science and fiction books, You can purchase the whole set as ebooks or one title at a time. These are also available on places like http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Category:Children%27s_Bookshelf and internet archive. Yesterday's Classics have much better formating if using an ereader.

Sorry Viv, the yesterdays classics  site doesn't contain the Henty books, but Gutenberg does and they are in an epub or kindle format in addition  to PDF. Kindle!!!

Sonya, I actually spent the $50 to download those books...which are in the public domain. I rationalized it to myself by the fact that (1) some of those books might not be readily available via PG or Google Books (er...really? I'm seriously doubting it), and (2) they are nicely formatted. But the bottom line is that it saved me a bunch of time, even if it still did take an hour or two from start to finish ("finish" meaning all of the books being accessible on my iPad).

My fingers have been ITCHING to click on the "Buy all 225 Kindle files" button ever since Sonya posted that link! Lousy formatting of ebooks irks me, so the nice formatting is the main selling point for me. Glad to see that I am not the only one rationalizing away... Heheh

forgive my ignorance , when given choice to download as epub or kindle , both could be read on ipad with kindle apps for ipad or ibook , do you have any preference ,is one better than the other ??

Depends where you want to read them from. Keep all the kids stuff together if possible. I use ePub as the files are usually smaller. I would choose pictures over no pictures as a priority though.

ok i loved the link sonya shared but 150 dollars is a lo for us , so i would choose to go hunting them for free. Unfortunatly this would take me for ever , i have no time i work in my sleep so i went back to the site and was reading through and at the end i found a link to buy this same set for only 50 dollars. Well this makes a big difference , that is why i was wondering what did dad dude mean by saying he paid 50 dollars for the set . So if you are really considering those books don't let the 150 dollars price put you off , when i clicked buy the kindle edition it took me to check out for only 50 dollars .

I use only an e-reader with e-ink as I hate reading much with a backlit screen. I prefer books instead. However, there are things you just can't find like all this great old literature - or if you do find it the books are in bad shape.

As far as the books go, if you get public domain books from Gutenberg and not from Google or internet archive, which are just scanned, the formatting is not bad. Gutenberg has had volunteers since the early 90's retyping all these books. You will get a table of contents etc and usually the pictures but not always. They have some books on their kids shelf you can't get at Yesterday's Classics and vice versa. Yesterdays Classics has evidently reduced the price of this set. I paid $100 for the set 2 years ago. Evidently Gutenberg is getting enough stuff on their site that they have had to come down in price. Gutenberg is now also much better organized so you look at all the kids books in one place you aren't stuck hunting down each book by title. The only reason I would have known about some of these books is because of the Baldwin Project..

You don't need to order these, I just feel like I should support them as Yesterdays's Classics and the Baldwin Project have been keeping these books in use for years now. They can't be making much money, It is worth keeping them as you aren't going to find better histories than some of these. My oldest son enjoyed Madam How and Lady Why in the science section.
