I feel a bit silly asking the question because I'm assuming the answer is yes...but that is an assumption, and I'm curious to hear if others have had similar experiences.

We've been doing LR for 6 months (since she was 8 months old) and are now on lesson 130. Her interest has waxed and waned and we have adjusted accordingly. But to date, I have no signs that she is absorbing any of the info. When playing by herself with her books, she often holds the book upside down, which tells me she doesn't quite get it.

I'm not frustrated, nor even considering backing off of the lessons (it's not like they do any harm, and it's good quality time with her). That said, I am curious if others have been where we are...and where it goes from here.

Thanks!

I am also wondering whether my 6 month old baby daughter is absorbing anything from her daily little reader lessons as well. I started giving LR lessons to her when she was 5 months and 1 week old. I guess it's too early to tell right now.

I am sure others are more qualified to answer but..we are on lesson 103. ( but he has done lessons 125-? also while I wasn't looking!  LOL ) my son is 4 we started around Christmas time.
Like you many times I have questioned just how much is going into his spongy brain, and this is my 3rd time using flash cards! ( yep I am hard to convince  tongue ).
I shall tell you what I have noticed so far, as he is 4 he is more likely to actually show me what he knows than a toddler is.  We only watch each lesson once, not twice.
He knows what all the pictures are that have been shown to him. Now you may not think that's a big deal but go find a 4 year old who can tell you what a wall hook is! He has learnt HEAPS just in that general knowledge part.
He is confident with his colour words and knows his colours. He had to have learnt the words from LR. He was fascinated by them as the words didn't match the colors of the font ( which drove me nuts!  LOL )
He has read a number of words by sight. He never reads them when I ask him to Sad but he can,  I have sprung him reading cards along with Utube videos of other babies reading!
I am quite sure the pattern phonics is sinking in. He has a unusually fast ability to understand any phonics activities I put in front of him. Today I gave him pegs with alphabet letters on them. I asked him to peg the letter sound to a matching plastic animal. Using the first sound of the word. He did the whole alphabet, I helped him with about 6 letters. He also tried to make C say SSSSS, interesting? we do some phonics stuff at home but not enough o generate this result.
Finally I am convinced, from my previous children that flashing these words helps. They are both excellent readers, well above their peers. Plus they are as good as the number of cards they saw. My oldest saw many more cards and she is better at instant word recognition and fluency.
Keep going! Have faith. Add some phonics activities if you want to speed up the point of actually reading books as opposed to just words.

masterofmayo- try mixing it up a bit. Have you made any custom files yet? Grab some of her favorite toys and take pictures, then load them into the program. Then show her the file on the screen for a week or so. Print off the cards and gather up those specific toys and play a matching game using objects she can physically hold.  I find cardstock works best for this, walmart has it for about $6 if you're in the US. If you need help making a file, let me know and I will find post a tutorial link for you.

I bet she knows more that you think. smile

Thanks, MandaPlus3 and TeachingMyToddlers for the helpful perspective and ideas. In particular, like the idea of custom LR lessons. That's something I started to do initially, but abandoned because of laziness. I'll get back on it smile

We started flash cards when my son was 8 months old. We started LR around 13 months or so. When he was 15 months old he really started verbalizing words. Before that he would sign a few words - elephant, hair, more, maybe 50 or so. At the end 15 months his vocabulary exploded - he could read nearly every word he could speak. And he knew the words of all kinds of things kids his age did not know. By 17 months he could repeat almost everything and he was reading words he saw only one or two times. By 18 months he was sounding things out phonetically. Now at 23 months - I have no idea how many words he can read. He says words like universe, outrageous, and complicated and can use them properly in a sentence. Today he came down the slide - the big kid slide and said, "I did that myself. It was super scary. I'm not frightened - do again." There was another little girl thee a month younger than he is. There was very little that she said that could actually be called words.

I don't know how it is with other kids, but I do know Daddude's littlest has followed the same basic pattern with the vocabulary and reading of words really taking off at 15 months. For us it was more toward the end of the 15 month mark that things really took off. They are getting stuff from it. Patience. And they go in spurts. My son for along time would show off what he could read and was so excited by it. Then he just quit. He wanted to see LR but would not verbalize anything or would give me the wrong word if I pushed. About a month ago he decided he wanted to read and show me what he knows. Stuff is sinking in, you just have to wait for them.

Adding personalized stuff really helps. They like reading about the people they know, their own toys, their own playground, and pets, etc..

I just started yesterday and my daughter is 20 months old so I hope she can learn something.  I teach Kindergarten and 1st grade and I know that repetition is very important.  You may not be able to see results as soon as you'd like especially starting them is early.  Be patient and your daughter will soon surprise you.

I also agree with sonya_post about 15 months being the turning point. I started my son on LR when he was around 8 months and then there were no obvious signs that he could read until around 15 months he started gesturing words and reading some of them out loud.

He's now 18 months and his vocabulary is exploding exponentially. We also notice he seems to be able to sound out some new words phonetically although his pronounciation is by all means not perfect. He is also doing LR chinese and his chinese reading is also picking up recently although he seems to find the english easier than the chinese.

I totally agree that being able to read seems to help his speaking as well. Right now he's still at the single word stage but at this rate hopefully he should be talking properly soon.

I also find quite helpful is to go back to the early lessons - we were on lesson 150 ish but then when we restarted the lessons from the beginning (but at a faster rate and jump between days) he seems to be a lot more engaged.

Hold on there and you'll see results soon!

I used LR extensively with my first DD from the time she was 8 months old with peak use of it probably around the time she was 13-16 months old. At that stage there was no curriculum and I had to make my own categories and use the ones provided. My DD did learn a lot from it and I used a lot of flashcards along with LR which is where she first started showing me she could read those words - I would often stick 4-6 words on the wall and ask her to fetch me a specific one - around the time she was just short of two though she would purposely bring me the wrong word (think she liked to tease us) Her speech took off also around 15 months though it wasn't til after two that we were getting proper sentences (and then she seemed to skip over the 3 word sentences and go very rapidly to almost adult speech)

My second child has been slower. I have been using the LR curriculum with her and she enjoys it though has almost never looked at the screen during the phonics sessions - not sure why she doesn't like those. Her speech has also been slower and while my first daughter had a vocabulary of over 75 words before 15 months, my second child is only now at just on 18 months starting to come out with words though we are getting new words every day now so she seems to be in a catch up stage. I have no idea if she knows how to read any words and I have used very few flashcards with her. I do know however feel that her language is starting to blossom and that it is now time to bring out the words and find out what she does know.

LR has definitely helped with vocabulary - my youngest points to a large number of pictures in books of things she knows about when asked. There are a huge number of milestones that toddlers must reach at this age and sometimes something just has to click before you get the response you want from them - it doesn't mean that it is not going in, just that it is waiting for something else to show before they can show you what they know.
