New feature suggestion - see size in Playback window

Hi Everyone

I have a suggestion.  Can you put in a feature so that we can see the sizes of the categories or play lists in the Playback window?

The reason I’m asking is that I’ve been working on categories ever since I’ve bought Little Reader, and I have worked hard on them.  Late last night I finished them finally     , and was exited to upload them this morning.  To my dismay each and every category was too large to upload    (I have fourteen categories I want to upload – one half in Afrikaans and the other in English).  Each category has fourteen word sets in them.  I don’t want to make the amount of words less, because that would mean that I would have to have only about six words in each category.

Another option would be to resize my photo’s – but that’s going to take an awfully long time and is also going to compromise the quality of the pictures. 

It’s a bit annoying to have to export every category to be able to see what the category size is – unless there’s another way to see this of which I am not aware, then I apologize.

I really hope this could be a future feature – that would save me a lot of time of which I (and everyone who’s a parent  ) don’t have.

Firstly, this will no longer be an issue when we release v2 later this year.

As for the interim period, there's no solution apart from cutting down the size of the photos.  You must realize that no photos need to be larger than 1500 pixels along the longest side (and even 1000px is already good enough).  We size ours to be 1000 px across, and save as a quality of about 70%, in jpg format.

What is the size of each of your pics? Attach one here for me to see if you don't mind.  I can send it back to you 'optimized'.

Also, there are programs like ACDSee that can do batch size reduction for you.  If you do a search, there are probably free ones out there too that can do the same.  Someone mentioned this one which you can try: http://www.irfanview.com/

Thanks for your reply KL.  The sizes range from 40KB to 6.27MB (I know - that's way to large  ) I can't attach the largest one, so I'll attach another one.

I do have ACDSee, I can resize them easily.  I'll see if I've got the energy to redo all my words otherwise it will have to wait until you bring out v2.

I know if you change the pictures they automatically change in the words of the categories - if you haven't exported and imported your categories and replaced the words that is.  Unfortunately this is what I've done, so it won't be as easy for me to just batch resizing all my pictures  .

I'll resize all my photo's anyway for my next words I want to create.

But yes, anything over 1Mb is much much too large.  You should try to keep them under 100kB if possible.  Ours are all under 100kB.

And no, you do not need to redo the words.  You just need to resize the pics and keep the same name and location.  You can always make a copy of the original large file and back it up elsewhere or with a different name.  So if you can do batch processing, it should be a very simple job.

Oh, now I know what you mean KL, I'm storing my photo's on an external Hard Drive, but if I resize the photo's in the "My Documents\BrillKids\Little Reader\Media Library" folder, it will resize automatically in my Category Words -  - should have thought about that!!

Ok, I've resized ALL the photo's so that the largest side is 1000 pixels (I've checked one picture & it is still 181KB after the resizing).  I've reduced the number of words in the first category to only six words (which is not much  ) and then only is my category 4.73MB big - small enough to upload - and some of my words only have two or three pictures where the others have five or more!

But I don't like that the category only has six words, to me that's not a good quality category.

I think I have no choice but to wait until version 2  .  I really don't want to compromise on quality!

What i did when I uploaded the YBCR Spanish files was to broke them into two playlists. That was much easier than resizing the pictures. You still have it as a category in your personal LR and share it in two sets in the library here. Just an option.

A lot of people like 6 or 7 word categories because their baby's attention span is short. You can probably add a few more words and still upload it, or you can separate it into part 1 and part 2. Then people can upload both of them and play them together if they wish.

When you save, look out for Options (which is there for ACDSee), which will let you adjust the quality of the the image you save into.  You can adjust it down to about 60% and you will barely tell the difference, but that will reduce the size down to less than 100kB.

The category is already split into 7 parts to make it smaller, if I'm to size it so that I can upload it I will have to make it even smaller and then there will be about 14 parts.  Some categories will even have to have less than 6 words as there's more photo's in them.  But I'll see what I can do.
I don't want to go through all this trouble and then when my categories have been downloaded 100 times and will not make the list for premium approval because there's too little words in them.

Hi Everyone

I was busy making my categories, pictures, audio, etc smaller when I tested an upload and saw that the maximum upload limit is now 10MB!!!! 

I've finally busy uploading my categories!

Just for future reference if anybody else is having the same problem; ACDSee doesn't have the function for batch compression, but my friend has a program that does, it's called Macromedia Fireworks, I just had to create a quick small script and it was as easy as 1, 2, 3!
