Hi All,

I've been doing LR with my son for awhile now. We took a break while I was pregnant with my 2nd and just got back to LR a couple months ago. My son is now 2.5 years. He greatly likes LR. I am curious, for those of you whose child can read, how did this process happen? As in, did you only follow the 1 year LR curriculum? Or, did you do other things, such as flash cards, etc?

Also, do you find that your child recognizes the words even when they are not looking at the computer screen? As in, do they recognize the words in random books that you read at home?

Hope all of this makes sense:)

Hi Tessa!  Welcome to the forum!

I used flashcards before I started LR, but not very faithfully.  We labeled things around the house, and read lots of picture books with me pointing to the words.  Once we started LR, we didn't use the other things as often.  We did continue to look at books.  Recently, after she learned her letters ( using the LR file in the play and edit section while I said the phonetic sound) we started Reading Bear. Dad Dude, one of the dads on this forum created that site.  Check it out here:  http://www.readingbear.org/

I have also printed out word family books found here:  http://www.hubbardscupboard.org/printable_booklets.html#wordfamilyam  My daughter seems to enjoy them.

At first, she only recognized words in the setting where she learned them, whether that was LR, book, Reading Bear, etc.  Now, she recognizes most words wherever she sees them.  She has around 800-1000 words that she reads by sight, and can sound out most CVC words, and is starting to sound out long vowel words, and blending some consonants.  Basically, she reads on a early kindergarten level; she just doesn't have the pronunciation that most kindergarteners have.

LR is a great product!  Keep us posted how it is working for you and your little ones!

hi Tessa
My daughter is 18 months old and has been using LR almost every day since she was 12 month old and before that it was YBCR. The trick is to be consistent and to make reading and spotting word in your environment an every day activity. Words are everywhere and your child will be able to read the same words in different fonts and in different places, just turn it all into a game and have fun with it.
Ive written words all over my daughters toy block and she loves to go through them and show me that she knows what they say. Ive written words all over dolls to point out body parts. I stuck stickers on things like wardrobes, doors, balls, anything and everything.
Every kid is different and will go through different stages. This may or may not help

http://forum.brillkids.com/teaching-your-child-to-read/stages-infanttoddler-go-through-when-learning-whole-words/msg90795/#msg90795

Just whatever you are doing just keep doing it regularly and they will show you in their own time.

I have taught both of my little ones to read, both were reading at just about 2 and reading well by 3, and what worked for us was to use a variety of methods.

First we used Leap frog the letter factory to learn letters and their sounds, preschool prep meet the sight words for the words like the, and, all, it, to go....

Then we went to readingeggs.com, as an interactive way to learn and practice, the ordinary parents guide to teaching reading, reading bear and lots of books (Bob books are great, green light readers as are the key words readers from lady bird).

We also used Little reader, my boys both seemed to be predominatly phonics readers, but they sure learned a lot of vocabulary from little reader.

I know it sounds like a lot but for active boys we found that doingdifferent things at different times to accomplish each of the steps for reading really helped. Also every child learns differently so if you are not seeing progress maybe try a different method.

Thank you everybody for addressing my question! I'd give you "karma" but I don't yet know how to do that . . .

Thank you for this post! I was just going to ask something similar  laugh

My son has been using LR since he was about 14 months, but we did use flashcards before that and he has always been fascinated by words (and books, we read at least 10 toddler books a day!). We still do flashcards and everyday activity including reading and labelling stuff. However, he is now 23 months and not reading much (he has shown to be able to recognise a couple of words at different times but not consistently).

He is very interested in learning letters instead! I was a bit confused, but I think is down to him being bi-lingual (actually he also had a third language until three months ago) and finding it very hard to figure out two different sets of phonic rules. So now I am continuing to use LR but including more phonics activities. Thank you so much for the link to reading bear, it seems like iit is going to be great for us!

Can I ask you if any of your children were learning to read in two languages at the same time and how did they learn to read?
