I found out that it really helps if I keep updating the categories that I show to my daughter. It really makes her interested if I add every day a new word and retire the old one. I would love if this program can offer me something easy to keep on following the "recommended" pattern. I found out it really worked to keep my baby excited having everyday something new  for her.
Let me describe in more details (I hope I remember it well) how Doman recommends it:
Create 5 categories of 5 pictures each. Keep showing them for 5 days.  Show all 5 categories of 5 cards three times a day = 25 daily sessions.
The sixth day continue to show 5 sets of five cards, each set three times a day, total of 25 sessions spread out during the day, equaling a few minutes in all. Alway mix the sets up. Constant mixing and reshuffling will keep the sessions new and exciting. On the sixth day and later add 5 new cards daily and put away 5 old cards daily (add 1 card to and retire 1 card from each of 5 categories).
You may feel that the baby needs new material more quickly, then you should retire more cards daily and add more new once. Always resist the temptation to review old card over and over again.
Always stop before your baby wants to stop.
You and your baby should both enjoy the sessions. If not something is wrong.

What do you think is the easiest and the most efficient way to follow this with Little Reader? Creating the folders for categories (in new version) would help to make it easier to organize words. But what is the best way to keep organised what I have already presented to my daughter (retired words) and what on the other hand she has not seen yet? Also the good way to keep track what word was added the last to the category is to put a date on it when it was added. It is not possible to do it with Little Reader yet. Any idea?

I would appreciate any advice how I could I do it. Thank you.

Yes, for me this is also still a big question as to how to retire words from exsting categories. I also found that Doman's advice really works, but in Little Reader I had to so far retire complete categories. Could you, admins, please, give us more advice on this matter.
Thank you in advance, leana

Thanks for that, Martina.  It seems like this is quite a demanded feature, so with demand comes a determination on our part to make it possible! smile

Yes, Little Reader cannot easily do what you require now, so we'll have to think of a way to make it possible.  My initial thoughts are to add check boxes alongside each word in the Playback screen's word file display to determine which words get played.  So for example, you could have a big category (or big playlist covering several categories of words), and you could check 5 of them, and next time, you could uncheck the top one and check an additional one below.

That sound ok to you? Or any other suggestions?

Lil, thanks for sharing.  I agree totally. And our opinion is that we should give our children as much variety as possible.  Which is why I stress that Little Reader is not intended to replace anything, but to give an extra way to help us teach our children.

KL, it sounds great and easy for us to use.
I always used different system - I had folders of each category - 1 for "5 NOW words" that I was recenty showing to my daughter, 1 folder for "OLD retired words" and 1 folder for "NEW not seen words". And every evening I moved 1 oldest word from NOW to OLD and 1 any word from NEW to NOW. This applied for each of the 5 categories that I was presenting to her. This system enables to move ANY new word from NEW to NOW. I did it from easiest to more chalenging ones. Also the date when I moved some new word to the category stayed there (I wrote it to the notes of the word file) so I could not make a mistake. It sounds difficult but with the program I used (ACDSee and automatic presentation of whatever was in the folder)and good organisation it was very easy and required only few clicks.
However your idea sounds interesting and probably easier to use with Little Reader (if I consider Little Reader features - and pretty difficult to move words between categories (folders) - on the other hand I have not seen the new version yet with this incorporated better). I guess it would still allow us to put these 5 chosen categories with 5 checked words in each (or whatever amount suits our babies the best) as a favourite ones on the home page so it would be easy to play it as we set it up. And modifying every evening should be quick and easy too.
Thank you for your suggestion, it would be really great if it works.

KL that sounds great !! Easier than how Martina is doing it now too ! We can always create 1 HUGE playlist that has ALL our categories and playlists inside and always uncheck and check from that...piece of cake  smile I'm excited !

Well, with 1.04 (where we fixed the function allowing you to easily move (and even copy) words from Category to Category using drag and drop), you will be able to do the same thing that you're doing even without the extra feature.

But if you think the check-box system I mentioned will help, then it will be done!
Maybe I'll also add a right-click function where you can right-click on a word and it'll tell you when was the last time it was played.  How 'bout that?
smile

yup I think checkboxes would be even easier than the copy/move thing, for this purpose.
Mind you, we need the moving for adjusting the categories and playlists themselves Wink

Also, I guess the right click would be great! I have a question...do you never ever repeat the retired word again? or just after a long while like months?

KL,
the check box would be really great and in combination with the right click (viewing the last tïme it was played) it is absolutely perfect.  yes
I guess I will still be able even to move words up or down to change the order so I can actually choose which word to show next day by simply moving it up to first unchecked place, right??
Thank you so much...It really helps a lot and make this program even more perfect.
Is it going to be in next version of Little Reader? And when can we expect it?
Thank you again.
Martina

P.S. Nohayo, if I remember well, Doman recommends to retire the words completely. But follow your child - if he/she keeps looking away from the screen when you play it again (lets say after 6 months???), he/she is probably bored. If not and you do not have more new words or categories to show her/him, I guess there is no harm to do so.

OK, I split this topic into its own thread since it's starting to stray a bit from the original thread, and since I think this is an important enough topic in its own right.

Martina, to answer your question, yes, I think moving it up and down shouldn't be a problem.

I doubt this will be in the next version, unfortunately, cos I think it might be quite a major change. Hopefully by Beta 1.05? smile

Thanks KL, I do think as well that this is important discussion about retiring old cards that is why I really appreciate that you are involved and that you are willing to incorporate it in the program... We are eager to see the next version of the program and even the "next next" one.  Wink

Hi KL,

I was wondering if these features were added in LR. I have LR version 1.6.342. How can I use these features?

Thank you in advance,

Regards,
Gilma

Hi Gilma,

Are you talking about the checkboxes?

If so, funny you should mention this, cos I was thinking the very same thing 2 days ago, after having totally forgotten this thread!

We are planning to add a Curriculum Creator function for future builds that would do auto-adding and retiring, but it's not going to be that soon. So in the meantime, I was thinking of adding checkboxes first.  Hope to get this done before year end!
