Hi there,

I'm sorry to say this, but I would like to return Little Reader that I purchased last Father's Day. I don't think it works for my daughter. It's simply too frustrating to customize. I already tried using it but to no avail. She seems to be much better off with other programs (Reading Bear + Flashcard). Is it possible that I would request revocation of my license and get a refund?

Thanks.

Hi Robbyjo,

Yes, there is refund available for 30 days after the purchase which (together with 2 weeks trial period) gives you 6 weeks to try the program and change your mind   yes !

There are countless of things you can do with Little Reader, have you tried them? There are many parent-created lessons on every topic imaginable in 27 different languages in our library.

You can add your own lessons as well. In addition you can use Little Reader as a custom tool for teaching your child Encyclopedic Knowledge, with review cycles and all, making Doman's EK program a reality. For example, right at this moment I am working with group of parents to create Geography EL course for small children, which contains 800 long Encyclopedic Facts and about 1400 short visual flash facts for 40 countries of the world. I also creating sight word reading exercises for my toddler who is reading already and Long sentence exercises for my other child. What was a deal breaker for me is a possibility to create consistent progressive courses with review cycles and record keeping, tailored to each of my 3 children ( without going crazy in the meantime  smile )

We also use lots of others programs to supplement our LR lessons, while having it as a back bone of our learning process. Good lack and I hope you will be able to find the learning style that works wonders for your child!

Hi Robbyjo,
There are always people here who are wiling to give you support on the forum or by phone.
To be honest I use LR as it comes and only do few changes now  - we are doing it second time.
You do not need to customize it .
It is an amazing tool and I am sure everyone here exoerienced the time when their child refused to look at the screen.
Maybe you could record you lesson and post it here to get some advice.

If I were you, I would keep LR. Your little one might not like it now but she may love it later. My son used to refuse to watch LR. We had to stop for a month and then tried again. You can use LR without customization. I think it works perfectly well. Also, you can use Split Word feature to create your own phonic lessons.

I have been using LR since 2010. My son's out grown the curriculum but I still find LR useful. I am now using it to teach him Phonograms and spelling.

Oh, you can easily create homemade flashcards with LR with only a few clicks.  The print feature allows you to print every single word and picture in LR curriculum. This would save you  a lot of time when you want to create your own flashcards.

If you aren't good at keeping track (like myself  LOL ), you can use LR daily lessons as your guideline and flash the word and picture card (by hand) according to LR curriculum.

Thank you all for your well-intentioned replies.

To begin with, my kid is a really intense kid. She loves to be introduced to 25-30 words a session, 2-3 times a day. She has a different scale of retention loss (not superior or anything, just different) and very different style of learning. She absorbs information very quickly. For example, she could memorize 80-85% of Preschool Prep Sight Word and Phonics DVDs on the first viewing after a few weeks of the first viewing. As such, she found LR very boring and very short. I'm already frantically playing catchup at her breakneck pace. I had thought that LR could accommodate or at least become one of my tools that I can regularly use to teach her to read. Alas, I can't.

What perplexed me the most was that she understands many new words very quickly, but she still couldn't read. She recognizes sight words quickly and can read them. The same goes with phonics (letter blends, consonant blends, trigrams, what have you). However, she didn't realize that letters can be blended into words which carries meaning in the real word. This is despite the fact that I hammered all the reading lessons in multisensory way. I think this is because she's very right-brained to begin with. She recognizes words as shapes. I discovered this clue when she could read the same word in one font, but not in another font. I had thought LR could serve to bridge this gap.

To respond to this apparent lack of left-brain training, I try to customize LR to introduce far more words to her, with a different recall patern (I use Pimsleur's Graduated Interval Recall approach, BTW), and completely different game section. I tried to do so, but I couldn't get it done. I ended up resorting to the same old multisensory flashcard approach.

Then, I try to drill in more phonics approach. And boy does Reading Bear work wonders! Hats off to those who recommended this free website to me. It suddenly dawned on her that letters can be blended to make words and words carry meaning. I did it about a few days ago, and her reading improved exponentially almost immediately.

Now, I don't know whether it's about maturity issue or not---but nonetheless I feel that LR has been completely superseded by the Reading Bear. Hence, my request of refund.

Regarding about Encyclopedic Knowledge: I am not sure whether flashing knowledge facts would help anyone retaining EK, considering the retention loss factor, learning style, and what not. I think it is far better for one to have complete understanding about something in order to synthesize new knowledge, rather than rote memorization. As such, I am more partial towards multimodal immersion approach, of course, with parent as the subject "expert". However, I have not read any peer-reviewed research papers regarding this area to see if Doman's method could be effective or not. So, I cannot say much on this front, except perhaps about the Method of Loci (MoL) and its associated approaches, which research has found to be very effective. Given that the MoL approach is so different than Doman's card-flashing approach, I am somewhat skeptical that LR would serve that purpose (i.e., EK) well.

If a child doesn't like a program, he or she will probably not learn much from it.  I purchased LM about 18 months ago, and for a long time I thought it was a waste of money, because my little one didn't like it much.  I recorded my own voice and added all the things he loved most, but it didn't help.  Eventually, 12 months down the road, he fell in love with it!  How lucky am I, now we use it almost every day!

I would recommend to all Little Reader users to take the time to really get to know the program, because it's not a reading program for babies, it's an all round educational tool for all ages.

For flashing words quickly using LR, have you tried using the word lists from the categories rather than using the LR lessons?  This has less repetition and allows more control as you can include settings about speed of flashing, whether to include videos / pictures etc.

I have to note that BK just refunded my purchase. Thousands of thumbs up for BK's customer service!

I definitely will try BK again on my second child (coming up end of Feb 14). I hope that it will work for him/her.

Thank you!
