Hi

Ive been wondering if anyone knows of any authors of children's versions of Shakespeare. Ive found Marcia Wiliams who writes Key stage 2 books (for 7 -11 yr olds).

We borrowed this from the library last week as one of the usual 30 we take out a week. We've read all the rest but H keeps bringing this back for me to read again and again. Its only got 6 plays in it and I was wondering if any one knew of similar styles of Shakespeare for kids. Have looked around and cant find anything....

Am also wondering where she is now taking me - we're currently reading the chronicles of narnia at bedtime - but Im wondering about things like Jane Austen, James Joyce etc - are there kids versions of these - she adores having me read to her - but still needs the pictures to look at.

Am also wondering about putting thogether a shakespeare  play on little reader when Ive got 5 minutes!!!! rolleyes  - would need to think about this especially the pictures!! But wasnt sure whether anyone else would  be interested and didnt want to waste time if it was something only H is into - am currently putting her school reading scheme books on for her as and when she needs an extra boost- but thats time consuming in itself!!

A quick search of Shakespeare for Children turns up a couple of websites and Amazon is selling something called Shakespeare Can Be Fun,
They have a lot of his plays, MacBeth, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, etc http://www.amazon.com/MacBeth-Kids-Shakespeare-Can-Fun/dp/0887532799#_

I'm not sure if this is what you are wanting or not, but look around on Amazon and google Shakespeare for children and such. Good luck.

But, If only your baby H benefits from it, how can it be a waste? I love this community and love seeing everyone elses successes and I love encouraging, sharing and watching others childrens grow up so successful, so nurtured and so loved. But ultimately, I only really, really, really, care deep down about my own childrens development and well being. I think we all should adopt that attitude, in the end OUR children are the only ones who matter in this whole early learning/infant teaching adventure.

Anyway, on the subject of shakespeare, personally, I HATE this fellows work (which is highly over rated in my opinion) and have suffered through the bare minimum of his works because school required it. I'll be happy to let my kids read him, if they like, but I couldn't care less and wouldn't go to any extra effort to introduce or share this particular author...

I fail to see whats so spectacular about his work, personally I prefer Dr. Suess myself....Wink

Sorry to be so negative, but thats the honest truth. (I know, I know, I'm about to lose all my karma points now...*sigh*)

Thank you Mom2bee - have found them on amazon.co.uk as well - cant think why I didnt see them when I looked!

I totally agree with you about educating your own - thats why I got into this - and everything I do for both my children is basis that it and them are the only things that matter.

But Im afraid we'll have to agree to disagree on the subject of Shakespeare !!
For the record I adore Dr Seuss too.

And Shakespeare isnt something I expected to be reading to my 3 year old. Like you I only did what was required when I was at school. I didnt give it to her - she found it after we borrowed a book that was the story of a boy from the current time who went back in time to the globe theatre. The whole thing fascinated her so I looked for a kids Shakespeare book - and here we are. She came in from nursery this afternoon asking me to read more Macbeth to her -  and then topped it by starting to quote some of a passage that we read yesterday - totally knocked me sideways.

So I guess it isnt so much what we as parents think we do or dont like - its what they get out of it so  I may try and  put something more together for her thats good enough to share with others - dont know need to give it some thought!! Either way H is still in the driving seat and if we end back on some more normal 3 yr old reading material then thats fine with me to!

Not cost you any karma - interesting debate - thanks! smile

We love the books in the Usborne Illustrated Stories collection. Here is the one on Shakespeare: http://www.amazon.com/Illustrated-Stories-Shakespeare-Story-Collections/dp/1409522237/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1298665381&sr=1-2

and I would be greatly interested in LR files of Shakespeare's plays!  Thank you in advance!  big grin

That was really funny Mom2Bee.  I had to read it twice because I couldn't belive it at first  tongue  Actually, I felt similar when I read the title of the post, why read Shakespeare.  But then I credit this question/lack of taste to the lack of creative bone in my body.  I also wonder the same about Tom Sawyer and all those other classical books.  I am much more of promotre of business type reading, the type of writing you actually have to use when writing essays in college.  Or even reading a science books or invention books for my daughter.  We do read storybooks, offcourse, as they build imagination.

Anyways, I did do a search for why read shakespeare and found a short article - http://www.capecodonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090819/OPINION/908190332/-1/NEWSMAP

I guess the more variety of types of books you read with your child the more their creativity in writing develops and their understanding develops.  That is what I got out of it!   If other moms want to add, to pursue us non-Shakespeare lovers,  it would be very nice.    I have always liked Shakespeare stories but I just don't like reading the play styles as they are soo confusing to keep track of who said what.

My 6 year old daughter adores Usborne’s Stories from Shakespeare. When she borrows it from the library it is so hard to coax her away. happy

http://www.usborne.com/catalogue/catalogue.aspx?cat=1&area=ta&subcat=tas&id=1581

However the Usborne’s Stories from Shakespeare is for the more experienced reader. I would suggest starting with the Usborne Illustrated Story Collection’s Illustrated stories from Shakespeare recommended by aangeles above. We also love the Illustrated classics for girls in this series.

These Shakespeare for children stories have been fantastic. My daughter is as familiar with many of Shakespeare's plots as she is with the popular princess fairy tales. I am sure that she knows more of his characters and stories than I do!  LOL

Mum.

Ah! A Kindred spirit!!! LOL, I have no problem reading all sorts of books to children, but I've never been interested in the 'classics' myself. The closest I've come to the classics is Tolkien! I'm constantly fighting with myself to share unbiased any literature or product that I can, especially with children or students of mine.

I know that when the time comes, I can't let my personal biases stand in the way of my future kids receiving a spectacular and well rounded education. Though I've tried and failed on one or two occasions to read through Twain and Shakespeare. I found his work to be so...over rated. It was a mega let down and the fact that I was forced to continue, I HATED it, I hated the story (Romeo and Juliet), the genre, the characters and the 'drama'. To me it was the story of how to silly youth ruined their lives and how their stupid parents learned a valuable lesson in 'what matters.' I found the language less relevant than Queens English, and I didn't give a darn about iambic pentameter and I don't really like poetry anyway.

Huckleberry Finn or was it Tom Sawyer?--either way, it was just about the most boring, and one of the most overwhelming, books I ever attempted. I may listen to some good Audio versions of the classics, or I may just wait and share the abridged, childrens versions with my children and let them decide to persue it at a higher level on their own. I don't really believe in censorship unless something is simple smutt (or if its Twilight! Then I burn it on a stake!  ph34r ) I read an abridged version of  Dickens Great Expectations when I was younger, don't really remember it much though, it was assigned reading and I was 6 yos. I do remember taking the book to my father because it had the word 'ass' in it. He blotted it out and wrote idiot.  big grin .

I didn't get a chance to read the article, but I have to say that I didn't do many classics at all and I'm a VERY creative writer. I do read a lot of books but I'm a 'ditch' reader. I have dug myself into the ditch of reading what I like and ONLY what I like. I'm going to work on that, theres a lot that I want to share with my kiddos that I haven't got personal experience or such with. I love hanging around on these boards because they force me into a level of consideration thats easy for me to overlook when I'm just dealing with my own thoughts all the time.

I want my kids to be better read than I am, so I'll have to read to them and with them from a variety of sources.

But were still studying Dr. Suess!!!  tongue , hah!  smile
