Hello everyone. I am starting this program only this week, and my son is already 4 years and one month. It seems a little boring for him. Any thoughts with this?

Hello,

I'm in the same boat; just starting with Little Reader this week.  My son is 2 years 8 months old and we are starting with Little Reader on our iPad.  It seems to difficult to get him to pay attention, although he loves the "Multi-sensory" portion and the "Games" section because it's interactive. 

I'm eager to hear from other parents who started the program a bit later, and to hear their tips, tricks and success stories.  Do you do both Session 1 and 2 together?  Did your child prefer the lessons on the iPad or on laptop, and why?  And, while I know that we shouldn't be focusing on the results, how long before you noticed that they are absorbing this information? 

Any information for this new mom, would be greatly appreciated.

Hopefully you two will get more replies, but you may need to play around with the settings to get it just right for your child. Focus on the sections that your child enjoys and skip the others for awhile. Then gradually add those sections back in. I think many people try to do the sessions at separate times of the day...Ex. Session 1 in the morning and session 2 in the afternoon.  If your toddler seems bored during the second session, maybe try skipping the second session and go straight to the next lesson instead.

I know that my toddler does not like too much repetition. She only likes to see things once or twice, and then we have to move on. We are doing Reading Bear, and I only show a lesson once. If I do show it twice, I have to separate it by at least a day or two.

Also, try to keep it exciting! Make sure the sessions are kept fun. If your child isn't into it, then maybe try doing a lesson on your own while he is in the room and make sure to be excited while you go through the lesson. Most of the time, the child will show an interest in what you're doing.

As for seeing results, it really does vary. Some kids are eager to share what they know, and others are more reserved and show what they know in their own time. Typically, it seems that toddlers are able to share what they know more quickly, but definitely try to just focus on input and having fun bonding with your child smile

I was a late starter too.  My daughter is now 8 yrs old, so it felt like centuries ago.  The formal lesson didn't interest her.  Instead I made playlists of her interests, particularly food.  Then I played into her desire for world domination.  I let her hold the grocery list, read, and cross items off.  It was a big power trip for a toddler/preschooler.  I printed out the lyrics to her favorite songs so she could sing along.  When it was obvious that I wanted her to read, she wouldn't always cooperate.  Reading worked better when it was part of a bigger activity.  I played concentration card games- wrote words on one set of index cards, and pasted the images on another set.  Then she could spread them out faces down and play concentration.  It worked her memory and reading together but she just thought it was her favorite card game.  I used lots of nonfiction concept books from the library.  She thought we were just learning about the world, and reading was just secondary to the goal.  I can't remember how late we started - I think somewhere between 23 months old to 3 1/2 yrs old.  If you search my name. I'm sure some of my old posts would reveal when I started.  I had a very headstrong kid, so we took lots of breaks from reading but somehow she was reading very well before age 4.  She also liked reading recipes to me.  Any activity that made it seem like she was the one in charge was very appealing.  She liked being the boss of the todo list for the day.  I would give it to her and explain I could really use her help keeping me organized while I drove and did errands.  I also wrote the names of all of her plastic action figures on cards.  She liked putting the figures on their respective cards.  We would go on nature walks then get concept books about bugs, trees, and mushrooms, etc.  I would pretend that our nature walks were very important scientific studies so we needed to collect specimens ( leaves, acorns, etc) and learn about them.  Good luck, Lori

Never mind smile. I re-read your post...in between 2 and 3.5 years, I see. So it might have been a whole year and a half or half a year short of 4...I guess it is never too late. smile

We had a similar experience, it was too boring for our then 3 year old and even our 1 year old wasn't interested. What we did then was not to do the full LR sessions but just go into the categories and watch only the ones our kids liked. They really liked all the animals and wild animals and also the transportation category. They also actually really liked the stories (going to the zoo etc.). So I just let them choose the categories. Same with LM, they didn't want to do the lesson but they did like the clap along songs, so we just did the parts that they enjoyed. No idea if it had any effect but at least they had fun.
