I am really interested in using the Doman Method with my daughter, age 20 months.  However, in today's economy I am a little hesitant to lay down almost $100 on the software program.  Obviously, Little Reader saves time over writing out flash cards by hand; but what are it's advantages over making my own Power Point slide show?  I would really appreciate your opionions.  Also, please let me know if you feel there are unique benefits to the Math program.  Thank you!

Hi Tornado,

For Little Reader, please see the Advantages of using Little Reader page, I think it may answer a lot of questions.  Also, Little Reader is specifically designed for attaching media files such as audio pronunciations and videos.  With PowerPoint there are many fidgety settings (embedded file size limits, for example) that you would need to be familiar with to make an equivalent presentation.  Once you have created the words in Little Reader, you may also randomise their order, which PowerPoint also cannot do.  Furthermore, each time you play back a created lesson in Little Reader, it can show different pictures, use different pronunciations, and even modify type settings!  To do so in PowerPoint would require creating many copies of the same content and adjusting each element manually.

As for Little Math, you can randomly generate a sequence of dot cards (whether to teach counting, or mathematical equations) simply by adjusting a set of parameters, and it will create the entire presentation on the fly, guaranteeing a unique lesson every time.  One of the main arguments against math dot cards is that babies may simply be memorising dot patterns, a problem that Little Math handily circumvents.  smile  But one of the greatest features of Little Math is the sheer variety of icons available.  In Little Math, icons are the pictures used when representing quantities in dot slides - many parents have commented that this is the single biggest reason their babies are enjoying math again.  By using personalised icons, it can make the difference from abstract, meaningless red dots to fun, relevant lessons that your child can enjoy.

Those are only brief answers though, for more information do see our product pages and related articles -

Of course, if you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask smile

Cheers,
Shuki smile

Actually not to sound like i am their agent ....kekek just kidding .... i am not serious ....

I look at it his way ...... LR lets you teach your child words, and hopefully to read, even if not there are lots of pictures in it ....... ( i know of success rates in this GD thingy ..... and there are failures...) But look at the bright side, even if the baby doesn't recognize words ..... they will be able to recognize the actual thing and say it as it is .... and they know that there is such a thing at an early age ..... of course if whole word reading fails we can try phonics ..... which can start at 2+ or 3 ... and again LR does help you with that .....

and not to mention the tonnes of files they have ..... its really quite a treasure ..... you don't have to look around for books etc to cover a wide field ..... and can spend your money on some core books without worrying that the other sectors ar enot covered since you can use LR database to help you with that .....

Lets put it this way ..... the amount of time spent preparing, the amount of materials needed to prepare it, .... will cost alot more ..... but in so saying you still do have to prepare some materials to cover all bases ...... so it back to one crucial facter .... time ..... well actually 2 .... the other being knowledge base ..... we don't know enough to teach everything to our child ....  we don't know what we need to teach the child .....  so ...looking thru LR database maybe we find some treasures ..... plus ... we get to teach them 2nd or 3rd language tooo .....

as for gaining enough points to buy LR ........... hmmmm even if you get 20% of LR, not sure if can get enough points to buy LM at 25% off ..... so worst come to worst .... buy the pair at 15% off .... and save the points for some premium stuff .......

You can earn points also, you get discounts when you buy the software.I know what you mean. also you can print the flash cards for free, just downloading. There always a wy to do something else.
The flascards help kids to recognize the words and the power point to reinforces them..thats the way i see it. My baby loves the computer so I get advantage of it.

LR solved my inability to organize all my educational downloads. I still use PowerPoints as well but having a clear picture where is what plus being able to mix the presentations and show them in random order really helped.
As far as LM if you just flash dot cards 1-100 to your baby, PowerPoints would be enough, to create them for the entire GD Math program would be very time consuming. Plus you get multiplication tables and more.

I also like the Little Reader but it just seems like its too expensive for a software program.  I understand the concern about the economy.  I am laid off and I wouldn't fork out that much money, if I can get enough points I will buy it only then.

Have you seen the prices of other learning mediums? They cost a lot more and do not have the ability to be customized and expanded. It is very well priced compared to other programs. Plus, we have given everyone an opportunity to earn points for a discount.

Thank you all for your guidance.  I just purchased Little Reader this weekend!  I am really quite happy with it!  Now I just have to hope I can earn enough points to earn Little Math for 25% off!!!

I just learned about the point system so I will try to buy it if I can get a discount. I do have to say that I haven't found another website so dedicated to the achievement of our children.  thanks.

Ooops, I just saw this thread, and I wanted to add something in about Little Reader, which I think you just can't do by making your own PowerPoint presentations:

Apart from the images (which obviously anyone can duplicate in PowerPoint) LR lets you EASILY attach pronunciation files and sound effects.  PowerPoint has a lot of limitations concerning embedding sound files.

And of course, there is also the value of professionally recorded pronunciations (a guarantee for all BrillKids-created files.) yes  For families whose first language is not English, this is a very big advantage to have, since proper English language learning stems from proper English pronunciation and spelling.

We also do produce lesson files in different languages, which have professionally recorded pronunciations from native speakers to ensure that you and your child will be learning these languages as they are meant to be spoken and read.

I agree LR is useful and it has great advantages over power point slides (in terms of convenience in creating materials).  One good thing it has over regular flash card is its ability to attract babies attention to video/sounds/picture files that accompany the words.

OMG, reading this thread make my wanna buy the software NOW!! I join u all yesterday & cant really sleep at nite! Keep thinking whether to buy or not to buy..argghhh...i ask my hubby opinion, & he simply said .."u know better" (of couse lah ..my credit card ...of course i know better .." ) hahahaha...

i think LR its quite reasonable price tho...after convert to M'sian ringgit, its less than RM 400. I bought Gogo Education Set for Qarissa is around RM 1800!!.Full set of education come together with talking pen! It's gud & my dotter love it! must make sure Qarissa know how to hold properly b4 giving her the talking pen or else i have to pay another RM 500 to get 1! (can but another LR ooo)

I spent time downloading the sample of flash card (PPS) yesterday & show to Qarissa..she love it! But...but ...she keep on clapping her hand on my laptop keyboard!!!! aiyooo...how lah friend! she clap on until my screen DESKTOP rotate 90' degree!..gosh!!..she keep on grabbing my mouse too!!

one thing i love about this LR is the sound..coz my dotter easily get distracted with other things around her.. she feels bored easily ..& she want things that move, talk, dance, got sound & so on... she dont mind to keep on looking at it the whole day..as for flash card, she love it only for 2 minutes..then ...arghh...i try to show her the GOGO flashcard this morning...n guess what?? she's yawning with boring face after 2 minutes!!!! she keep on looking @the TV (i need to off the TV for a while so that she will concentrate) and said Gogo, gogo....gosh!

then when i show her the LR PPS ( i showed her the animal pps coz got sound), she love it & start to follow the sound. I need to  train her to "behave" in front of the PC or laptop ..hu hu...

well, i will study the program 1st, collect some points....n hopefully can buy the software for Qarisa....

watie, what are wonderful experience that u have with ur little qarissa.same happened to me,balqys only can focus on the flash card only a minute, than she turn her face and watch tv..arghh..so i have to present the flash card in different way, sometimes stick it at the wall, sometimes i have to pile it at floor(from front door to hall,  LOL  ),and more exciting way to make it fun and entertaining. and thank god,she like it very much.a small advice, show the section that she more interested first, maybe animal section with sound.

i must get my LR!

Hi Qishi Mum,

Ya lah ...i think babies nowadays very advanced kan .? we have to "crack" our head (for ideas) to make them interested in whatever we're teaching! I think even the normal teacher cant do that! We can because its our babies & we want the best for them! I think why all babies r more intested in TV @ DVD are because of the color, sound & action. You know what?? I have to make silly & funny faces (with sound some more ) to Qarissa when i show her the flash card THEN ONLY SHE WILL PAY ATTENTION & LAUGH A LOT! ( laugh until she puke!) ..eg: when i showed "tounge" flash card, i have to put the card in front of my face (cover it) , say "tounge" & at the same time show my tounge & do some sound act like a peek a boo game..) Its very challenging & i have to think of new education game to play with...perghhh....

i will  try n follow ur way of playing the flash card! gud idea ..thanks to u! Hehhehe..
