Id like to know the same.  Is the software enough?  Are the folders and flashcards etc that come with deluxe worth the extra money?

Very happy with just software, plus it has an excellent option of printing sets straight from the program!

Hi There,
First of all, no I am not being paid for this long post smile

I bought LR Deluxe and LM and I think we got Way more than our moneys worth in my opinion.
Search my name and read some of my posts. Actually, they use some of my comments on the text testimonial page and then link it to my full longer post of some of our experiences.

I do agree with Skylark that the software is truly excellent and the printing option is going to be more and more useful as we move through the program.
We started Wyatt at 10 mo?? and if we have another little one..We think of it as a long term 6-8 year investment.., yes, we'll use the print feature, haven't yet.

Think of the convenience of just opening your box and having 8 sets ( i think?? ) of categories printed for you. What i didn';tknow when i bought it , maybe I missed it or they didn't promote it??

was that for every word there are 4 different presentations of that word. different font and colors. Also, there are 4 different pictures to go with that word. So you do the math, I may be wrong so someone pls correct me... 8 sets x ?? 10 words per set x 4 text presentations x 4 picture presentations= ??

That's a lot of combination's which is fantastic. The flap cards keep them together and usable. What else are you going to do with all these self printed cards? Without a "container" the Thin paper, either way, will be torn to pieces or eaten really fast smile.
tape them or glue them all to cardboard or thicker stock? thats a LOT of "time" that i just choose to 'Spend" playing the learning game or cuddling ( actually we do a lot of cuddling while we're learning ) or playing with cars.

Just open the box, choose which of the 4 options u want, and slide them in. Done, ready to play. How we use them...
We have them spread out on the floor, also in a little box he can go through and take them out and in the binders.

There are going to be a lot of words being learned in the next few years so we actually specifically requested that Brillkids sell MORE of the flap cards, flash cards and the binders and we bought I thnink 3 of the new separate sets.... plus.... so 5 extra binders and 80 or more cards??? cant remember.

We can take the binders anywhere, car trips, leave one a each grandmas house etc.
We actually would like them to sell the whole curriculum printed out as another separate package so i don't have to do all the printing.

They are great quality and frankly, the reason...one of the many reasons, we love the whole program is that it's ready to go right out of the box and we can spend more time playing the " learning game". thats what we call it.

With all the things in life we all have to do, spending a few extra bucks on organizing the plan for the next few years instead of a night out at a nice restaurant or whatever...just was an easy choice for us. And i can't work at the moment due to car accident so money is tight. Long term, years.... Absolutely worth it for us. Flexibility and easy to review previous lessons.

oh, i almost forgot the books, very smart way to present the story. It actually teaches reading at the same time that we're reading a story. They work into the story the words we're learning in the software and it isolates/highlights the main words. Now the Aesops fables are out and they are great too, we have them all.

So, that's what I think about that. Hope it helps you all smile
Good luck and welcome to the community smile

Thank you so much ExtremeBartendingDad for all that! smile I don't believe I could have written anything out about our learning system which will come even close to what you just said. It really warms my heart to read something like this from someone who uses our system.

That's nice to hear Lappy, thank you. I call em as I see em and we are so happy we found this community and the learning game.
Wyatt and I are so close now and it's hugely because of our time playing it together.
He wakes up and pretty soon he's tapping both hands on the closed laptop saying daddy, daddad , daddy.

The set daily lessons, the stories that are the same as the books so he really gets to know the words, common sentences, the custom family category i set up with pictures & voices of everyone,
the different categories that we just randomly pick every day to show something new,
all the new custom settings to alter & experiment with....... there are just soooooo many ways to quickly vary the learning experience. Then, like i said above, there are all the "physical" more traditional but smarter designed learning tools.

LR and LM have truly changes our lives. I don't want to be melodramatic but to me now, every morning is like x-mas morning. Waking up to hear him talking and we know we're going to have daddy & baby time playing the learning game.
It and he and the overall experience that we have together motivates me to drag my self out of bed every morning, through all the different types of pain ( my car was rear ended by a cement truck so i can't do as much of the normal physical daddy bonding ) to lie on the floor or the couch with the laptop and wyatt crawling up, up up daddy ...cuddling in and playing & talking about our learning game.

Whew. ok, im a softie and this is my life.

Good nite all, i'm going to eat those milk and cookies by the fireplace and
wake up early to the priceless sounds of daddy daddy, baby laughter and my beautiful wife smiling at our family.
I am a lucky, lucky man

is there a step-by-step manual on how to go about the program?  i see sooooo much stuff on this site to download and add that I dont want to get overwhelmed...

also.... there are so many different systems, dvds and everything (a lot co-sponsored on this site), is it all really necessary?  I was born in the mid 70's, we didnt have dvds or even videos.  not sure if my mom used flash cards but I was reading and doing math early.  ill ask, but I think my mom had math text books that we went over.  I dont remember them being all that entertaining but I loved solving problems.  I was the only kindergartener who was reading at a 12 year old level and was doing multiplication/division for fun.  I had to stay after school a bit before an after-school program and my teacher gave me math problems which I breezed through.  I knew the Pythagoras theorem and what squared/cubed/square-root meant by the time I was 5/6.  I read the entire chronicles of narnia and a wrinkle in time in the 1st/2nd grade and we didnt have ANY of these programs......  my mom just read to me early on.

so.... is it all necessary?

Just with LR you have so-o  much covered already. Among different programs available there, LR is the most versatile and there is so much you can do with it.

There are other DVDs, videos out there, and some of them are great, but with LR you can always have new lessons added, expounded, modified, which makes it so much more useful over the long period of time!

@thisengineburns:

About the step-by-step manual, you may find this section of BrillBaby useful: http://www.brillbaby.com/early-learning/start-here.php
You'll find lots of articles there on the different teaching methods you can use, along with information on certain experts in the field of early learning.

We do not specifically say that you need to use all the different teaching materials we have here in the Forum, as the choice of which methods to use is really up to you -- some parents stick to one or two teaching methods, while others like to maximize as many methods as possible. One of the most important things we want everyone to remember is that you must aim to expose your child to reading and have fun while doing so. Using different teaching methods is one way to keep lessons fun and exciting, and each method can serve to complement the other (not to mention, this will definitely keep your baby from getting bored with seeing the same things every time!)

If you are currently trying out Little Reader, you may check out our Teaching with Little Reader ebook for an introduction to using LR: http://support.brillkids.com/index.php/article/brillkids-learning-system-ebooks

We've also updated our Little Reader software manual quite recently too: http://support.brillkids.com/little-reader-manual.php
(You can access the manual inside Little Reader by going to Support > Manual)

Hope this helps!  happy

Is it really necessary? Yes, and no. Today most parents work outside of the home. So they don't have the time to commit to make flashcards all of the time, or little booklets for their child to read.  It is time consuming to do no doubt. I do it as I don't have the money at the moment to get LR. I do have YBCR but it was used with Christmas money my daughters got from family memebers.

IRight now I'm just making small booklets for my daughter (a.k.a flashcards) until I can get LR.

I'd love to the the Deluxe LR because honestly I don't feel like putting it all together myself anymore. I've homeschooled for a long time. I'd love something all set up for me so that I don't have to.

No one will ever know what difference it would have made if more sophisticated tools were used.  And that's partly also cos every child is different, in that they prefer different learning styles and tools.  So if you had been a child who wouldn't have liked any of these modern tools anyway, then it would not have been necessary in your case.  If the opposite was true, then you could still argue that it wasn't necessary since you learned to read early anyway, but how much better could you have been?

Aren't we all filled with many "what if's" and "if only's" about how our lives would have turned out?  I know some very accomplished people who believe they could have been EVEN BETTER if only they had had a better coach, etc.  Does anyone really know what would have been the case?

This is also related to two of the common criticisms of early reading that I blogged about:

"The best way to teach babies to read is by reading to them."

"I wasn’t taught to read as a baby and I turned out okay!"

You can read my responses here:
