When should I start introducing spanish lessons

Hi, I have am just about to embark on the little reader program with my 27 month old daughter and my 6 month old son in English. I also speak and read fluently in spanish and wanted my children to learn also but I was unsure when in the program I should start introducing the spanish lessons? Should I complete the entire English program first and then start on spanish lessons or can i do them concurrently?

Hi Erica,

I introduced another language lessons to my son when I noticed that he was comfortable with LR and wanted to see more lessons.

I then added another language lessons after he was done watching the daily English sessions.
I started with showing new contents to him once a day, then gradually add more lessons according to his cues and attention span.

In a good day, he can watch LM/LR-English/LR – Thai/ LR – French /Reading Bear/ and EK in one sitting...and still want more! In a not so good day, we just watch EK, and then I let him choose whatever he wants to see and that makes him happy.

Hi Indira,

No, I did not. I don't speak French  I downloaded the lessons from LR library. Most of the lessons come with audios and pronunciations. For the ones without pronunciations, I use a free text to speech pogram to create the audio files to add to the lessons.

Hi Erica, i asked the same question yesterday on another thread about sp reading materials! This thread would have been more appropriate:-) Would appreciate any advice/ input.

My husband & I are both bilingual (English, 1st language & Spanish) so my son will learn to speak both languages intuitively.

Reading is another story. I'm on day 22 of LR & we have just started phonics. Can anyone give me some tips about introducing Spanish reading? Since both are latin alphabet based will my son get confused as he learns that the phonics of one don't match the phonics of the other? I guess this is where whole word teaching helps. When he sees "ll" for example in Sp will he just read "l"?

Is it better to wait a while before introducing Sp reading which is obviously much easier than English? I have some Sp flashcards (actual) that I use sporadically. Don't want to underestimate my baby's intelligence but neither do I want to confuse him unnecesarily.

Elle - excuse my ignorance but what is EK? Also how old was your son when you thought he was comfortable with LR or how far through it were you?

EK is Encyclopedic Knowledge.   

I have used LR to teach my son French which is also latin alphabet based language. Honestly, I don’t really know if he’s confused or not. I did notice that he tried to pronounce the French words he’s never seen the same way he does English. (My son learned to read with LR and also phonics.)

I started introducing French to my son when we completed Semester 1. I could not add more lessons to his schedule earlier because he resisted LR for several months. Once he warmed up to it, and eventually fell in love with LR, then I added more lessons according to his cues. He was around 2 years and 3 months old when I first showed him French lessons.

We usually suggest any time from the age of two to start learning a second language. From 2-7 are the years to be capitalised upon... that's when the brain is open to this kind of thing (to put it simply!) and when the mouth is still adjusting to new language.

With regards to the latter, I can roll my Rs, which helps with Spanish - but I can't roll them in the way a Spaniard does, and I never will be able to because I began learning in adulthood; my kids, on the other hand, are bilingual and they have no problem at all with their Rs!

I take it by "introducing a new language at 2" you mean reading?

Rolling your R's.. I'm Scottish so I'm OK but my Canadian husband gets very frustrated
