Here are the answers to your questions:
1. Would someone please explain to me the idea of two semesters in LR/ LM?
The whole idea of the semesters is that our complete curriculum (which contains lessons for 12 months) is broken down in half, as each semester contains 6 months worth of lessons.
The main reason why we enable users to have the choice between just getting Semester 1 versus getting the full Semester 1+2 is so you have a choice to get a short course, in case you want to try it out first.

Yes. This purchase price logic is pretty much the same for many other products - you get the bigger item, but you get more on value compared to getting the smaller item but end up paying a little more.
For example, here is the price difference between getting Little Reader Basic Sem 1 and Little Reader Basic Sem 1+2:

Little Reader Learning System - Semester 2 ($80.00)

3. How would one go about doing it in the first place?
If you have already purchased Little Reader Semester 1 and you want Semester 2, you will need to go through a process which will "UPGRADE" your existing product.

No, and this is not possible for Little Reader either. The reason why is because parts in Semester 2 require files which are in Semester 1 (especially since in the latter parts of the lessons some review sessions are included - and you can't play the review lessons if you don't have the original files which the lessons are meant to review!)
