We're thinking of adding a feature to LR and would like to get your opinions.

Not sure about you all, but I have tons of imported Categories in my Word Library, so the list is very very long! smile  And that got me thinking as to how we can make this process more efficient.

I'd like to get your opinion and comments on the following:

- How do you organize your Word Library in general (in terms of folders)?

- How do you organize your imported Categories?

We're considering 2 possibilities in terms of new functionality:

1. Auto-creating an "Imported" folder and having all imports automatically go into that folder

2. Auto-creating a folder in the name of the creator's screen name and importing them into that folder.

Which would you prefer? Or any other suggestions?

Thanks!

I organise my word library in languages, since it is a priority to me to expose kids to as many languages as possible. I would like to have subfolders inside so I can organise that more, for example, create a sub-folder for Arabic "done/already played" categories and another for those that I still haven't played...or maybe one for arabic math and one for arabic word flash and a third for arabic word and pics ...all inside the arabic.

In my opinion, the best way to organise LR would be by allowing sub-folders coz this will enable anyone to customize their library the way the want to and according to their own needs, even one level of sub-folders would be enough Wink

If I absolutely HAD to choose one of the 2 solutions you gave us, I'd say make an imported folder, because the screennames of people will not help me much while playing the categories. the only benefit from screennames (aside from giving them credit of course  big grin) would be to keep track of what I have and havn't downloaded...and if you guys will revamo the downloads section soon, hopefully we won't need that in our library Wink

my 2 cents   smile hope what I said is clear enough !

I'm still getting the hang of this and have a lot more to download but I did notice my list is getting pretty long.  When I pull a word out daily and put in new I search down a long list trying to find what I want.

I have tried to organize by having sub-categories.  I have a food category, automobiles, animals............................

Also, I need to make a retired category of words/categories I have already used to get them out of the way and only see the words I haven't used yet.

I agree with nohayo,  if I had to choose between the two I would choose the inport folder. big grin

Thanks for asking! Wink

I organise the folders by language as well but since it does not let me use subfolders I have created categories like - English categories, English word flash, English Math, English Nursery rhymes and childrens stories, English Signing,..... I also have folders English - Played and English - To be played and English - Playing.  I also have the same in Czech and other languages.

Concerning the importing function I would prefer the option of Auto-creating an "Imported" folder and having all imports automatically go into that folder. It will help me to also organise folders concerning translations. I try to translate as many categories to Czech as possible but since the most effective way to translate for me is to re-do English ones into Czech and then import the English ones again - (I still can not copy a category, can I?) then it would help me to keep organized what I have already translated and what not. From the "Imported" folder I can move the categories to appropriate folders.

My choice would be:-
"1. Auto-creating an "Imported" folder and having all imports automatically go into that folder"

I agree with nohayo and koala girl - make an "imported" folder - I do think that someplace ought to be given so you know who created the category.
At the moment, like koala girl I'm still finding my way around, and some way of distinguishing new Categories from those which I have already seen and sifted through would be good.
If sub categories are possible then I think that would make things a lot easier - like I have when I (try to  rolleyes ) sort out my photos.

I have spent quite a bit of time trying to organize the Categories and Playlists. And tried to find something in help etc.  I am thankful that I came on this discussion, but a little disappointed there is no conclusion.  To me there is a real problem in simply organizing what I want to teach my children.  What solutions have taken place since this was posted?

I see several examples given with LR that seem to have sub-files such as "Alphabet Sets," "Number Sets," and "Foreign Language Sets." So I tried to make my own "Beginning Reader Sets;"  It didn't work so well for me.   How can I easily put things where I want them?

Below is an example of how I want my LR files to look like.  If I could drag and drop these files this would be very helpful here.  If someone can give me a tip I would greatly appreciate.

Sunny’s Lessons
   A.  Speech Goals
       1. Words for practice
       2. Phrases for practice
       3. Sentences for practice
    B. Reading Goals
       1. Alphabets upper case
       2. Alphabets lower case
       3. Consonants Beginning Sounds
       4. Consonants Ending Sounds
       5. Vowels
           a. Short “a” sound beginning of words
           b. Short “a” sound in simple “cvc” words
           c. Short “e” sound beginning of words
           d. Short “e” sound in simple “cvc” words
           e. ...
           ...
           j. Short “u” sound in simple “cvc” words
       6. Sight Words – (found in Reading Stories, other lists, etc)

Hi mas2in,

Thanks for bringing this topic up again.  Actually, there has been a conclusion, just not implemented yet.

What we will have in coming versions (which should solve your problem) is 'sub-folders', at least 1 more level, and if not too difficult, another level deeper.

As for the original question, we will implement a default "Imported files" folder to store imported Categories/Playlists.

All in good time! Thanks for your patience! smile

I see that there are going to be subfolders, great! That will be wonderful.

I currently organize my folders by the 10 divisions of encyclopedic knowledge:
Mathematics
Art
Geography
Literature
Language
Science
Biology
Music
Human Physiology
History

Then I also have a Reading (Word Flash) Category, A story category, A poetry category, a song category, a bible category and Spanish and French categories (which I'd like to make subcategories in language).

This works well for me so if I try to do encyclopedic knowledge type program I can show one slide show from each category, but it will be great when there are subfolders to neaten everything up.

What I do is I organize the presentations based onto which encyclopedic knowledge category they would fall into, mainly using the pictures as bits without the programs of intelligence.  So for instance if it was about the 7 continents I would put it into geography and that way if I procure POIs later I can add them.  I have however uploaded some of my encyclopedic knowledge database:

This is the planets with 10 programs researched for each planet for making flashcards:
http://forum.brillkids.com/downloads/?sa=view;id=2815

This is the same thing only I have read each of the 10 programs for each planet to be played as the picture audio in a rotation fashion:
http://forum.brillkids.com/downloads/?sa=view;id=3048

This is for paintings by DaVinci once again w/10 researched programs on each card (for flashcard use):
http://forum.brillkids.com/downloads/?sa=view;id=2973

And this is sided shapes starting at triangle and moving up to pentadecagon (for flashcard use):
http://forum.brillkids.com/downloads/?sa=view;id=2837

I actually have many more, the problem is I save each picture as a single file (all in google docs) and each set of 10 programs of intelligence as a single file to keep printing and organization easy for me.  So it is quite an ordeal to combine them into one file, or to create a little reader doc for them and read/record 10 programs of intelligence for each picture.  I have been focusing instead on creating new media. However, if I have time I will try to chip away at my personal set for encyclopedic knowledge materials so I can share them with everyone.

I agree with the Import folder.

But what I would like to see is a either a tree-view control, where we can organise multiple levels deep, if needed.  Or to use a folder control as found in Windows, Outlook, etc that allows us to create folders and have files in there.  Where we can sort on name, date.

The folders at the top and the files underneath if they have not been inserted into a folder.

I find it very frustrating that there is no sort funtion when trying to trail down the list of catergories added.

Thanks,
Tracey

(but unfortunately it's not going to be for a while yet - we need to get Little Math out first!)
