Hi there to all of you!!

How r u all doing?  My son is doing great at school, this year he is really enjoying it and he seems more integrated than last year.  obviously I'mvery pleased with this improvement.  How is your grand child doing Jake?

I'm really interested in the Glenn Doman approach.  did it work for your son justus?  is it very intensive?  I'm especially interested in the 'petterning' but the problem is that you need commitment from other people as well giving that you can't be on your own to do it.  how does it work out for you?

Have a good week everyone  smile

Khloe - Have you heard of patterning machine's?  I saw a video somewhere but can not find it, but I did find a picture of one.  This one does not look to have as good of design, but I'm know I've seen another model somewhere.  I liked the other model a lot better.  One person was able to move a lever to make it work while the child just lay on it.  It allowed the child to have a completely passive role.  K has developed a very good cross pattern crawl so I quit looking into it.  I don't know if this one is any good but here is the link.

Hope it helps.  You could try googling it.  I'll keep looking & let you know if I find the other one.

Hi Khloe,

sorry for the late reply, just went for a holiday with the family.  We have 3 people doing the patterning.  We did it 6 times a day, seven times a week.  That is during the time when he was still not crawling and creeping.  We have one person hold the head and the other two persons on the hand and legs at each side.  You are right that it needs a lot of commitment from the family members.  But the benefits are excellent.   Once we did that for a week,  we saw our son starting to crawl.  (Glenn Doman's definition for being on the floor tummy down).  Within half a year or so, he started to creep (tummy up).  My son, crawls and creeps a lot for the first 2 years.  He only started to walk when he is 2.5 years old.  Patterning does not only helps with the motor skills, it also allows a child to have a good visual image, speech, brain development etc.

I only have limited experience in this, but I must say it is very importment for our brain injured child as well as kids that do not start creeping and crawling early.

My 3rd child is a bit delayed and did not crawl/creep at 6mths so i started to pattern her as well and leave her on the floor.  At 7 mths, she can creep (tummy up) the house, says ma ma, pa pa etc.

So I believe pattterning is good.

you may want to refer to this site for more information,.  http://www.iahp.org/

best regards

Khloe - I forgot to add that the patterning machines can allow 1 person to pattern the child by themself.

Hello everyone,
I am happy to find I am not alone on the site. My baby girl is 1 1/2 and has the DS. She started creeping (had problems in accepting the idea of doing it) for about two month, pulls to stand but doesn't really show signs of expressing her needs. She's more likely to try and fulfill them herself. I am taking her to occupational therapy, to kinetotherapy and to a baby swimmingpool. I have been fascinated by the Doman ideas and am really interestested in putting them at work. Though, I am Romanian and don't have anyone to talk about. That is why it feels so good that I got in touch with you all. How are your kids? From what I guess, Kay is almost the same age as my Erin.
I don't have too much time right now but I couldn't resist to say hello. I'll be in touch soon.
All the best.

Hi Luana!

It's great to hear from you, & yes our girls are very close in age!

It sounds like you are doing well for therapy.  K gets occupational/ physical & speech therapy, but she only goes once every month or two, so I have been very thankful to discover Doman & then Brill Baby.

I have been doing some Doman since Kay was about 6 months old.  She started crawling quite early ( 8 months) and I think it was partly due to using a crawling track.  She started creeping at 12 months but didn't do it consistantly until about 14 months.  She can walk holding one hand, but I think she is quite a ways from independant walking yet.  I'm really trying to get more consistant & organized because I'm sure it would help her even more.

Quote
doesn't really show signs of expressing her needs
Do you mean with words? K says a few sounds eg: uh for up, but not clear words.  We have been using baby signs with her.  Have you tried that?

I think it is a good sign that she tries to fulfill her own needs.  A little independance will be helpful in the future.

This is the only place I have to talk to anyone also.   I do talk with my husband but anyone else would think I am crazy.

Chat with you soon!

when i was in school i voluntered one of my studdy hours to help the special needs childeren they used tons of flash cards and similar programs with the kids they seemed to like it and responded very well to the programs i was with these kids from 6th grade till graduation it was very rewarding and i loved being with them just remeber they are kids that are able to express them selves diferently and may have some dificullty in doing some projects so just be patient and do get flustered.

i have 3 children with autism. I send them to speech, occupational and structured therapy. I do not give any of my children any type of medicines. Like Jake said...there are alot of side effects. If there are tantrums, then there is a reason for them. Frustration for some reason. Try to find out why the child is frustrated and deal with it calmly and patiently!

I found that when telling him what is going to happen before ,he does not get frustrated . It worked the story of going to school. last Tuesday we had a party and told him before to be good and stay good boy and he did well. This morning he had the concert at school. He was to be dressed christmas father. In the rehalses did not stay and torn his dress in pieses.I bought him another one and told him he is a good boy and stay near the kids while singing. To my astonishment I realy cryed when i saw him that he stayed.Last concert he entered from one door and exit from the other.

All kids are unpredictable, especially children with autism. Last year my son participated like the others, this year is didn't even want to enter the gymnasium. He is very moody. On the otherhand, my daughter Hope participated very well and her twin sister Yvonne was ill and stayed home.

I have such wonderful news that i would like to share with my friends...My son is nonverbal but lately he is saying a three word sentence.  "I want ...juice", etc... It may not be much for others but my son is seven and this means so much to me.

Grover - That is so exciting!  3 words sentances for a nonverbal child is amazing progress!
