I wish the TV teacher did cursive as that is what my son prefers (me too!). I am considering making something similar, though not as fancy as what the TV teacher has done, but with cursive... Let's see if that ever gets done  blush  I am definitely going to get the drawing DVD that you suggested, it looks great!

Yes lelask I agree they are slow. My little one did not seem interested (I think because it was slow). My sister-in-law is a teacher and said it doesn't teach the meaning of the word - just repeats over and over, which I guess is true.  Maybe I could repeat a word over and over and my little one would end up saying it...for free.  laugh
Has anyone ever tried Rock n Learn? I just bought the preschool DVDs from Sam's Club...Amazon has tons of good reviews on them. Has anyone used these DVDs?

We watched Letter Sounds today and it seems to be much faster and much more interesting for her. She made me watch it twice and I realized how usefull it is for me to learn about pronunciation!!!

Yay! Preschool Prep is on zulily today!
http://www.zulily.com/invite/rrisianova852/e/preschool-prep-081912.html?tid=referral_email_event

Since my last post we have been watching their dvds regularly as she asks for " letters" every day first thing in the morning!!!! We have been watching diagraphs, blends and letter sounds. The sight words she does't find as interesting but we are awaiting the flashcard collection soon and I am sure she will like it and learn it as well smile
It is a great product and I am glad it was brought to my attention again!

AND as an awesome bonus, Preschool Prep just brought out an app (free!) if you own the DVDs the app somehow allows you to load the DVD material onto the IPad for on the go smile

The app is called Preschool Prep Company Video Player. ( you do of course, first have to load your DVDs to the computer)

Which of these that are on sale should I consider? I knew it looked interesting when I saw the sale this morning, but not quite sure... FYI, I have LR but am not going to start Cub on LR probably until at least month 3, maybe month 4. Right now, the only screen stuff we're doing is starfall letters (mostly just to hear the repetition of the sound, and he likes watching the animation) and we're doing PPT single picture/word a few times per day (just doing family members for now)... and am going to start on math dots in the next week or so... with that caveat, any of these on sale that I should strongly consider?

I would say meet the letters. It's an a,,,b,c in phonics style that you could play along with the rest of your activities. My only question would be would the background music distract pokercub from hearing the sounds. I dont think so as it is very repetitive in both music and sounds. You could add in blends and digraphs too if you like. The digraphs i think are particularly useful, but it is too early yet for poker cub to use these. You will use them later, if they come in a set.
Meet the shapes and numbers and colours are probably a bit redundant ( particularly since regardless of your teaching pokermum will teach him these big grin ) they are so easy to teach during everyday activities.
The books I really like! Big print, clear font. Not too boring. Sadly we only have 1 of them Sad
We have the sightwords also and my son likes them best. He doesn't find them too slow at all ( perhaps because he doesn't watch much TV?) he is definately learning sight words from watching them as he has shown me a few words in his "school readers" that he knew before I taught them. He also might like them because he is EXACTLY at the stage of learning to read where he need to learn them.
Flashcards...well I don't get it, why would you need them? Make your own. I think in most EL cases the flashcards with extra pictures would probably just add extra info to the kids brain and course confusion. If you are using the DVDs then I can see a case for using the flash cards ALONG with regular print flashcards, to help make connections.  If your kids are learning to read using whole words, teaching sight words separately isn't a big deal, if the kids are older 3-4 and being taught more systematically then I would suggest useing a set of sight word reader books instead. Over age 5 use sight word flashcards and ANYTHING else you can to reinforce them! Just my 2 cents worth.... unsure

We have only been watching meet the letters preschool prep for two weeks now and I have seen positive results. DS now points out the indeividual letters in words on his flash cards and tells me bug and boy both begin with B. Funny because he hates the pattern phonics part of LR. I guess these helped him make a transistion in reading, like a light bulb went on.Yes, these are repetative and annoying to me at times but my son loves them and really learns from them. I use the DVDs and books, their books are flap books that are sturdy.

I did/do use the colors and shapes DVDs and books, they were the first ones I purchased and DS learned from them and I brought more.  Maybe I could have taught him myself but I found these useful. I'm not sure when we will move onto sight words.

My opinion....

I never did and I never would buy the meet the letters. Honestly. I am not sure what the point is. I taught my son phonics and never the letter names and he knows all his letter names just by picking them Up all over the place.  Which honestly astounds me. We still call letters phonics. I tell to practice his phonics,  write his phonics. smile It was perhaps a bit before he was 2. He came up to me and told me he "lost my phonics" he was carry a letter from a puzzle. He would go on to say. "I have /Mmm/ I need /Kuh/." most kids would ask for the letters M(Em) and K(Kay).

I feel that shapes and colors are easily picked up by exposure too. And in the grand scheme of things I think learning letter sounds that will lead to precocious reading preempts learning colors and shapes.

As for what to buy.... In a heart beat I will say to buy the meet the sight word readers. I have been searching for good readers that are entertaining and easy and these are high quality and worth every single non discounted penny.
If you have an Ithing I would honestly pass on flash cards and  videos for "meet the colors, shapes, numbers, letters, and sight words." there are apps for all of those that are only 99c each. Actually 2 apps for each meeting. A flash card app and a multiple choice app.

We have the first meet the sight word DVD. At about 20-22 months my son learnt all the sight words from it after about 500 minutes of screen time. (assuming the dvd is 50 mintues like i think it is) I used apps for meet the sight words 2 and 3 and my son mastered those both with about 100-150 minutes of screen time.

I really wish Meet the Phonics had released apps when my son learnt those. But alas, they still have not. Sad But until there are apps for the three "Meet the Phonics" DVDs I would recommend buying those.

This summer... Just passed...almost. Preschoo prep told me that they would have their "meet the phonics" readers available. I am still waiting for when they come out because I will be snapping those up too.

I have Meet the Colors and Meet the Shapes board books. Sadly I am unimpressed. There are way too many other books that I would rather spend money on.
I also have the giant work book and it is very low quality and I regret buying it. I gave it to a friend. smile

I recommend the phonics and sight word DVDs.  I bought all of them and have never watched the rest.  Korrale4kq is right my son also learned much quicker with their apps.  He even learned all their Spanish apps in a day.

I never used any type of readers with my son.  I bought many packs but they said designed to teach your baby to read.  He made the jump from whole word reading to phonetic reading so sudden I never had the chance to use them.  Mastering phonics is soooooo important.

They sent a free flash card set of the letter which I did not like too much.  They were too busy with all the graphics compared to the simple doman style.

Korrale4kq - thanks for the heads up on the quality of the workbook.  My son has been asking for it repeatedly from seeing it on their closing credits.

Ok confession, I don't actually watch TV with my son when he watches these....so perhaps I am confused. I have meet the phonics, letter sounds. It does teach letter sounds. NOT  letter names. that is the one I recommend you get. I actually didnt relise they made one that taught letter NAMES. So when I posted meet the Letters, I actually meant Meet the Phonics. Sorry for any confusion.
Korrale4kq I agree teaching letter names to kids when your goal is to teach reading is completely pointless  smile Teach them the names sometime but certainly not as a priority!

I am using the dvd´s more for teaching her to speak and use words rather than to read but I agree with what are others saying.
Colours, shapes, letter, numbers you can teach with Sparkabilities and YCCD when the time is right.

I chose to buy the flashcards simply becouse she is very RB orientated and the dvds are a bit slow for her when teaching sight words. I am hoping, as she knows the graphics, she will also look at the words with more interest.

Keri thank you for the app!

We just got the sight word readers and they were an instant hit with my 3 yo. He has become very resistant to reading aloud, but with these and other select easy books (Spot books, Karen Katz flap books, etc.), he is more than willing. I can't wait for the phonics readers!

Mind, he does read whole paragraphs, more difficult books, and diagrams quietly to himself, but I like to encourage him to read to me for gentle corrections in pronunciation, and short and sweet fluency practice. I also believe that public speaking skills are very important especially for "team" settings. I have met many adults that have a very hard time reading aloud during classes and such. These fit the bill beautifully, There are just enough words and the print is large and clear. I can have him read one or two of these a day and let him be on his way.

I decided against any of the DVDs as my son learned everything on them from LR, homemade books or playing with mommy. My daughter seems to be on the same track. The one change I made with her is that we added the Leapfrog Letter Factory and Talking Words Factory to the mix. They are currently her favorites and she will occassionally make several letter sounds when she spots their letters at 8 months old. Another up with the Leapfrog DVDs is that they have encouraged spontaneous spelling in my 3yo son. I don't feel the same would occur with the Preschool Prep DVDs.

Thank you for your input on this. It appears the sale has been extended from ending today to ending on Wed.

Regardless, I'm putting in my order on zulily for meet the phonics DVD & the sight reader package (levels 1, 2, and 3). I'll keep the apps in mind should I get a tablet (curious if they run only on ipads?) - since it looks like they're far more efficient.

Sadly they currently do only run on ipad. Preschool Prep have been saying that they will make android apps. But they have been saying that for over a year. So I am not holding my breath for it to be anytime soon.
