I just wanted to share the great results we've been having with pre-school prep. Meet the sitewords DVD's.  After less than a week my son can read all the words on the first DVD. The best thing is he is recognizing them in the real world too.  I also like that you can choose to use the standard typeset "a" or the a that is normally taught it handwritting. We have used YBCR in the past, but he just got so bored and would only look at the videos.  These videos only show the words so it eliminates that problem.

What I did was I went to the dollar store and got the learning tree flash cards pre-K, K, first, second, and a few of the other sets.  Then I went through and found all the words from the DVDs.  Each day we watch the video once and do the DVD's. I just can't believe how well he is doing.  He is even picking the words out of books and reading them.

So, wanted to share my success in case anyone else was looking for yet another DVD.

Wow, thanks for letting us know about Meet the Sight Words DVDs.  I watched a demo on their website.  I think my boy would like it.  smile

I just received the 7 dvd set from Amazon yesterday. For Aussies and probably other countries, it's cheaper to buy the set as postage is $3 for the entire set, not $3 per individual DVD. ($5 shipping on top, but if you by other items you save again because you only pay shipping once).
For my tastes it's deathly boring, but I can see that it will work for bubs as there is a LOT of repetition and it doesnt go off on other tangents.  Meet the numbers goes over and over 0 to 10. That's it. Nothing much else. Works fine on my universal player, no special encoding to prevent it working as some have. Meet the...colours, numbers, letters and shapes are all playable in Spanish as well.
You dont have to watch the entire dvd for 30 mins, you can select a segment, or flashcards. Letters teach lower and uppercase, and the different lowercase "a" and "g". Colours only teach 8 basic colours, Shapes the same.
I mainly wanted the set for Meet the Sight Words 1, 2 and 3. Each teach 15 or 16 sight words, that is "high frequency" words that are taught first in early primary school. Bub seems to like them but in small doses. www.preschoolprepco.com
I have ordered the Dolch Sight words 1 and 2 dvds thru Amazon, which teach the top 200 high frequency words and looks very entertaining...I think they're on www.kid2020.com and You Tube, so will let you know how they go.

But I wouldnt bother with meet the colours or meet the shapes if I hadnt bought the set to save money.  A complete waste of time.  You dont even SEE the word written down, so for instance you just hear "orange" over and over again, and see a lot of orange, but dont bother playing it, you are wasting valuable time.

We've been checking out Meet the Sight Words from the library often enough that my son yesterday at dinner just spouted out "www.preschoolprepco.com" for no reason that we could see. I guess they learn more than just the sight words.

The Meet the Sight Words have their own boxed set on Amazon for about $30 (fluctuates between $30 and $32). You get 15 sight words per video. My son loves them and learned half of them in the first 1-2 weeks.

We've checked out Meet the Shapes from the library as well, because he was attracted to the familiar characters. I wouldn't say it was as educational, but what we both like is the barn dance when you can choose a character to dance with to the tune of Turkey in the Straw. Then my son imitates their dances, so it's a little interactive aerobics session, especially because he has to dance with all of them.

I think it's a great formula on the words because the words themselves become characters that the kids can focus on. The first word is "of" which turns into a plumber holding a wrench (the f is the wrench). My son will walk around with a pretend wrench trying to fix pretend pipes muttering "of" over and over.

I know this is a very old thread just wanted to see if anyone who had used these DVDs had an age/timeline recommendation.  Thanks!

I'll share with you what we've done so far.
We started Meet the Sight Words and Meet the Phonics Letter Sounds about 3-4x/week when my LO was 12 months. She started learning the letter sounds and started verbalizing them pretty quickly (within days). She can say the majority of the letter sounds with the exception of e, g, j, and u. She's 14 months old now. In addition, she learned and verbalized most of the words on disc 1 of the sight words within a month to month and a half. Since she was bored with disc 1, we moved to disc two of the sight words. We started with the first couple of mini lessons and she says about 5 of those words, but she learned those a lot faster...within days. She's only seen the first two mini lessons of disc 2 a handful of times, as we have been watching other DVDs lately.
In addition, we started Meet the Letters and Meet the Numbers  few times a week at 13 months. She definitely recognizes all of her letters and numbers 1-10 (she's not a fan of 0). She will randomly call out letter sounds and numbers in public anytime she sees a sign. Today, we went to visit friends and their house number had a 10 in it, and she proceeded to say 10 (in Spanish) repeatedly. We let her watch the shapes and colors occassionally, but I wish the written word was included.
I do wish we would have started letting her watch preschool prep DVDs sooner, but I was a bit concerned about too much screen time since she was already watching Kidstart Spanish, Sparkabilities, Signing Time, Tweedlewink, etc. a few times a week
I think Letters, Numbers, Shapes, and Colors are recommended for starting at 9 months and Sight Words at 15 months, but I don't see any reason why you couldn't start them much earlier. My LO loves all of the characters.

I started my DD on them at 12-13 months only because that is when I heard about them. Had I known earlier, I would have started them much sooner (I think I did with my son but I don't remember exactly what age). I would even start somewhere between 3-6 months without concern. They are very slow moving videos and have no plot, yet the graphics are so well done that they are still appealing to older toddlers and preschoolers. Two thumbs way up.

They are probably going to be having a 50% off blackfriday sale, they normally do this time of year so check their website the last week in November or so and perhaps join their email list or Facebook.

I started with my son when he was around 2 y.o. He was reading within 6 months. He learnt the first DVD over a month. Then he learnt the second and third site words via an app within a matter of weeks. I am doing he same thing with another 2 y.o. He is almost 3 and recognizes the words but won't read the books. My son is almost 5 and has been reading chapter books for well over a year and he still likes to sit with the little one and watch the DVDs.
