Hi there, I was wondering if anyone out there has done the jones genius (reading or math or both) and what they think of it in general and/ or compared to LR and/or YBCR. My daughter is almost 19months and was bored with YBCR and bored with LR, but i try to keep her on with them. She knows a couple hundred words, but couplets are still very difficult...and anything that isn't just ONE word. i'm about to buy JG I think, but i wanted to see what others had to say about it first.
Also, how much time is spent with it everyday? ( i love that LR is so short) and do they use dvd's or computer or hard materials or what? Any info would be great. I keep asking them, but i still haven't gotten those questions answered. Thanks!

Hi there-

Here's a blog review of the product, it is paper based.

http://grhomeschooling.blogspot.com/2010/09/jones-geniuses-matrix-math-review-ages.html

We have made JG inspired manipulatives and so forth that have worked well for our family but I "spiced" up the program with a lot of customization. I am going to try and post some pics soon.

thanks for the link. A very thorough review. I think that may be too advanced for my 19m. old. i don't think she could put a dot in a specific place. i'd have to customize the numbers to be page size each i think and i dont' have much time for customization. hmmmmm

I started a "modified" version of it with my then 12-13 month old. I already had it for my older child. If I realized the modifications that could have been made I would have started sooner!

Okay, I will go take some pics right now...be back in 5!

OK, here's the JG stuff I made and modified. Dr. Jones recommends color coding the materials with the color of your choice and staying consistant as it will help with later memory tricks. Which is what the number/letter friends are all about, the story is a bit....colorless but using the poster and story, DD learned the number/letter friends literally in a matter of days! You have to color and modify IMO, the plain black and white papers will not maintain a 1-2 year old's interest. But the math is really solid, it's the equivalent of "phonics" for math IMO.

I reinfocred my flashcards with cereal box cardboard in the middle and used screen shots from the "Meet the Numbers" DVD's to make flashcards. I used the same colors for continuity and it's works out really well. DD always says things like "#7 is a dolphin" or "#9 is a cat!" even when she is just handing the wooden manipulatives. I trace my sons fingers on the flashcards with the rough velcro dots I added for texture. Handle loves to handle the wooden numbers too and I touch his pointer finger on each of the drilled holes. We used the counting toy all of the time and I match up the colored numbers. The whole thing has a lot of continuity. I am going to buy a longer counting ring toy that goes up to 10 from lakeshore learning.

More pics

This number line is made to be colored and cut into strips. I plan to make another color copy at a copy shop and cut and laminate it in strips. But this is helpful still for having all the numbers layed out in front of the child. We would play matching games where I would circle a number and she would "make it" selecting the correct wooden numerals. I need to buy more wooden numbers so we can play with 3 digit numbers. She is ready and can read some, but I cannot make 100 for example unless I use a big zero and a little zero from the puzzle. So I want to make another set of numbers and color code some wooden letter "friends" too.

More Pics

Upclose of the added velcro dots. My friend asked what I stick on them and I said NOTHING! LOL It's just for texture. But it's a great idea, you could create little items with felt or anything else to stick on each if they are small enough for more interaction. But DS 14 months loves running his fingers over them, it's a game for him.

And if you are worried about them learning to place the dots, here are some entry level ways to introduce the concept on page 2 using stickers and magnets. (supervise! choke hazards). The colors are different on the numbers because it was the first time I painted them and did not know about intentionally color coding them. I stripped and repainted them and remade the flashcards to match the video we have (preschool prep).

Forgot my link earlier, oops! here is it....http://forum.brillkids.com/teaching-your-child-math/homemade-jones-geniuses-matrix-math-manipulatives/ (pics on page 2)

Initially you place the dots on the numbers WITH the black dots, and then eventually on the plain numbers.

I still have to redo our floor number line. Modifying the program took a lot of work but I think it has been totally worth it! I need to make another set of flashcards too without Dots or cartoons on them for fridge work. The ones I have are the wrong colors. I scanned everything and edited in photoshop (well, I had hubby do it) so at least it's only a matter of printing, not recoloring by hand. Which reminds me, before you attempt to color the 0-99 number line, get a NEW set of fine-tipped markers. All I had on hand was some old ones my DD ha d semi-destroyed the tips on and it shows in regards to staying within the lines!

And here's the link to the 1-10 counting board. I do not own this one (although I plan to buy it) so I don't know how small/big the rings are. Like anything questionable, just put it up when you are not supervising so baby can't choke or don't use it! Math is certainly not worth a choking baby!

http://www.lakeshorelearning.com/product/productDet.jsp;jsessionid=N2nT1vyjCc1GK1n5zxLW7LDSwFdfkJbLJLdQ76KX1Nlc5nj6ysqB!384094054!-1054664476?productItemID=1%2C689%2C949%2C371%2C893%2C834&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=1408474395181113&bmUID=1300147758672

And here is a link to the Major Mnemonic system that JG teaches. I do NOT know all the details of the later math levels or have first hand experience, all I know is that DD was able to learn the associations for this level very rapidly using by color coding the cartoon drawings.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mnemonic_major_system

I forgot to add- I also took a sharpie and drew dots on our foam bath numbers. I couldn't do anything about the colors on those, but at least the dots are there. I'll do some math with them in the tub sometimes, although I need to try and find some foam numbers with operator symbols.
