Hi, I'm curious about reading eggs. It says for 4-7 years old, so wondering if anyone has used it successfully with younger children? Dont want to get a years subscription too early.

probably www.readingeggs.com

They are designed for kids who havent been exposed to learning to read from babyhood, so they think 4 is a good age to start. So I'm wondering if a 2 year old is able to use it. Or perhaps 2.5 or 3 year old? Trying to work out when I should subscribe. If I was to subscribe.

I used it with my son from about age 2.5. He loves it.  What I do is I sit with him and use it and do all the mousing and he just points to the answer instead of clicking it with a mouse.  For the books I turn off the sound and let him just read it first then go back and let him listen to the narrator read it.  He could actually read several hundred words before we started it, but this filled in a lot of the gaps and since its a fun game he doesn't mind repeating things he already knows that are easy for him.  I would recommend it as it is relatively cheap, a lot of fun and can really support other things you are doing.  There may also be a free trial?  There was when I signed up at least.

I used the free trial version with my daughter and would have loved to pay for a subscription as she really enjoyed it, but she is learning slightly faster with flashcards and books themselves at this point.

At two I had to control the mouse for her (she is starting to use a mouse correctly now at 2 years 3 months although would still need some help) and I found they had too many repetitions for her - I would get her to give the answers at first and just click for her and then for the repetitions I just told her and clicked myself to get through it faster (for some reason two year olds seem to need less repetition - maybe cause they have a shorter concentration span. She did learn quite a bit from it.

Two possibly is a little too young to get the most that you can from it - try the trial version and see how it goes. Three might be a slightly better age to start it (except if you have been teaching consistently from babyhood you would probably not need it)

Hello, Linzy;

Did you use another  reading program prior to trying eggs?
Thanks Anna

Yes, we did Doman type teaching from babyhood and he could recognize many words and knew letter sonds from the letter factory, we were starting to use phonics to round out his reading skills so he could decode words he'd never seen (he could easily recognize the words he knew, but had not intuited many phonics rules).

Hi,
can't say anything about using readingeggs.com with younger kids, but I am so thankful you mentioned it here. I am doing the free trial with my 4 yr old son and he just LOVES it... he is so motivated to get the golden eggs and have the "easter eggs" crack open and collect the creatures. He asks to do it every day, and in three days has done 6 lessons, with pretty much 100% success.

They do say to repeat lessons 2-3 times, which he has zero motivation to do. He just wants to go to the next lesson to move along on the map. anyone have ideas of how to get a kid to repeat lessons? I am not so sure that the learning is transfering out of readingeggs onto real books... I would say yes for the letter recognition, but less for word recognition like am and sam. (He got it all right on the readingeggs but didn't seem to recognize them at the start of the book Green Eggs and Ham (I am Sam, Sam I am, that Sam I am that Sam I am, ...)

Anyways, he is totally hooked on the program, and has gone from a complete newbie on the computer to understanding curser control, clicking, and drag and drop in just three days!! So thanks! I will sign him up for a year when our 14 day tree trial runs out.

Reading eggs sounds very interesting.  We have been using starfall.com for a long time. I have been a bit disappointed in that I don’t believe it’s motivating my child to learn more reading skills. He likes to play the letter sounds, watch the sign language, listen to the music and such – so he’s enjoy it, but I haven’t seen that it’s adding any encouragement to read.   However, it is very appealing to the kids. My son has known his alphabet sounds for eons and that’s still one of his favorite areas on starfall.com.  They also incorporate fun games like memory, sorting and more.  Since it’s a bit elementary for my son now, I will look into reading eggs too.
