I just got an email that the baby brain flash cards are finally available on DVD here in the US. I was wondering if anyone outside the US has tried them yet, since they have been available for some time now. I would like to know about the content and the pictures. Is it just words flashing or encyclopedic knowledge? Are the pictures real or clip art/cartoons?

I can't find a preview of the actual DVD anywhere.

Hi,

I had a look at the baby brain flashcard website a little while ago. If you click on the dvd covers you can sort of see samples of the images. It appears that they use real images as well as clipart. They also use moving arrows in some instances to point out various things and sound effects are used also where appropriate (musical instruments).

The subjects covered look great. The only reason I decided not to purchase is that the images and words seem to be displayed at the same time. I am trying to stick to showing my son the words and images seperately. Therefore, I purchased baby bit instead which I am waiting to arrive in the mail (there also seems to have more content on baby bit). I don't think there is encyclopedic knowledge on either program. I would be interested to find out. I will also keep an eye out for the preview. Thanks for sending the email nhockaday. Karma to you.

I am also waiting on wink to learn chinese to arrive. If this is good I will purchase the english program that they have coming out very soon. Their program also seems to be relatively in line with Doman's methodology.

There just seems to be more and more options all the time. It is so hard to decide what to buy!

Thanks. I viewed the site before. Unfortunately, it still doesn't give me the info I'm looking for! At least youtube has babybit videos available so you can see what they're like.

The  with Baby Brain (BB) is that the picture and word are on the same screen, picture at top, white strip with word in black within it underneath.
Wink to Learn (W2L) is Doman method, picture first, then word.

I like using both ways, as I think that's a multisensory approach, and I was not Doman raised myself but taught myself to read by looking at books with the picture and word together, so I figured out the word 'ball' meant ball, because there was a picture of a ball there.

I have both BB and W2L now, and I recommend both.  They're both cheap. And they contain quite a lot of different content to each other, even in areas that they seem to have in common. (As in, they both have animals, actions, flowers, food, body parts, things found in a house, shapes, colours, number dots and opposites, flags and countries, but even these contain vastly different info.  BB teach unusual colours like beige, magenta, dark green, lime green, and red plus white make pink.  They have unusual shapes like trapezoid, arrow octogon, and then combine them to teach red cross, white crescent, purple cylinder.. And what colours make up a rainbow.

I think BB is not as good pronunciation-wise, such as pizza is pronounced "pizz-ah" not "peetzah" as it should be, as Italians would pronounce it. And maroon is pronounced as it is spelled, not "marr-own" as it should be spoken. But W2L has a few irks also, such as "fruit juices" sounding like "sweet juices" and the occasionally "the" sounding like "duh". And some things may not be exact, like BB says Koala Bear, but to an Aussie that's terrible, as we arent allowed to call them that... they are Marsupials, not Bears at all!!

They are both good for encyclopaedic knowledge, but BB has more content that way, such as musical instruments, sports and exercises, landmarks of the world, the calendar and telling the time. W2L teaches more sentences and phrases such as I am... I have... I can..., but BB has similes.

They both teach at normal speed (Left brain learning) and at high speed (Right Brain learning) but BB is faster and sounds like The Chipmunks.

Baby brain also teach "one" is "1" not just a dot (in a completely separate lesson), and the alphabet, even showing that "H" is the same as "h".

Both, unlike babybit and Tweedlewink can be left to play thru the lessons consecutively with no stopping and having to use the remote to get to the next lesson, if you choose to play it that way.  BB actually plays automatically and will continue all day if you dont stop it.

W2L has a reward between sessions of a theme, such as Hamburg, Germany or Flying Birds, with just pictures and classical music playing, no words. But it shows alot about what a country looks like.

So, I recommend... get both.  And as far as the Chinese learning goes...couldnt comment on pronunciation... It all sounds like Chinese to me. But both being by Singaporean people, it's likely to be more accurate than the English.

BB has some sound effects, such as some musical instruments have the sound of that instrument at the same time, and same for animal sounds.

W2L words are written in different colours to indicate the syllables, though rhinoceros has 4 syllables but they colour it to look like 2 syllables.  Lion has 2 syllables but they indicate 1 syllable.

If you want to test your child's understanding, you could turn the sound off.  With W2L you will know if they are identifying recognition of words or just pictures, with BB as they are on the same screen you wont know. W2L has revision lessons at the end, so you can choose pictures only or words only, and turn the sound off if you want to find out if bub can read the words.
