Hi,
My 13 months old baby loves baby einsteins dvd, I know doctors don't recomend babies watch tv. But I think 20 minutes of tv twice a week is not bad for a baby. What do you think?

I think they're going by the drivel on TV which teaches very little and basically just babysits the kids while we get the housework done.  And a TV screen and a computer screen arent much different... it's what you do with these instruments. If they are for numbing and dumbing, they're bad.  But most parents on here would use them responsibly, the computer screen for LR and LM and educational comp games and baby learning websites (including youtube!), and the TV screen for signing and flashcard dvds and other educational  programs that are packed full of information about animals or help teach concepts like parts of the body. Sesame Street is far from packed full of info...it's mostly entertainment, with a few items to actually learn. And baby einstein isnt that bad, it has a lot more on it to learn than Sesame street, and captures my baby's attention, when flashcards arent at the moment. I have learned ver the years that baby's will not look at the TV screen unless it's something that is of fascination to them, and I can watch the News etc, and bubs will not watch it, she'll just play. To be of interest, there needs to be cute animals, toys, babies and young kids and puppets.  Like some ads on Tv she will immediately watch... one involves a drumming gorilla. But most of the time she wont even look at the TV, because we all watch boring programs.

In addition to the link Zaku provided, please read through these. If you are going to expose your baby to TV, it needs to be high quality educational DVDs. Baby Einstein is not. I'm sorry Nikita, but Sesame Street teaches much more than all the Baby Einstein DVDs put together. B.E. has very little vocabulary or any other educational material; they mostly have toys moving around to music. There have been studies about what the Baby Einstein DVDs teach, and the babies who watched them actually come out with a smaller vocabulary than the babies who didn't watch them. Please be very careful about what your baby watches.

I was using Sesame Street as a generalization, but Sesame St itself I think of as teaching one number and 2 letters per 1 hour episode, and maybe a word here and there, maybe not.  I can get these videos here for $2 each in the op-shops, but I dont, unless it's an episode like "counting", which concentrates on packing in more info. Not all Baby Einstein episodes are the same quality, but at least some show a lot of artwork by famous artists, they do have sight words, and classical music playing, plus animals.  I wouldnt show them all the time, but from time to time. I'd love to be able to overdub them with more speech, written words etc, but I cant, so I have to accept them with limitations, just as I have to accept that flashcard dvds have their limitations...bub wont sit and watch them because they dont capture her imagination or interest. I'd personally have created those dvds to intersperse the interesting-to-babies things with the dry-just-teach-them things. I wish that all babies would be fascinated by these flashcard dvds, but some just arent. i cant tie her to the chair and force her to watch, so I use a variety to keep her interested. At the moment, anything that has a ball or anything that looks like a ball in it is what she's keen on. (circle, orange, apple, balloon). Balls are all I hear about and all she'll sign the last few days.

(bracing myself for backlash..) Confession: My son watched Baby Einstein DVD's when he was little.. I didn't know any better then.. I dont really think they harmed him in any way, but I guess I will never know? He started YBCR when he was 14 months - he's 19 months now and can read around 10 words.. I do let him watch some other TV programs though, I try to be highly selective of what he sees. I try to find any programs that have words in it, like PBS's Between the Lions. I am very picky about which episodes I let him see because some of them are just plain weird, but we've found a few that basically read a whole bunch of different stories. One episode has the story Click, Clack, Moo and The Little Red Hen.. I love that they have all the words of the story on the screen and they highlight each one. I figured as long as I'm allowing him to watch something on TV, it might as well have words on it so it might help.  I know he shouldn't be watching much TV so young but for our own sanity's sake we've allowed it.

I think if Baby Einstein or any other baby dvd is watched in moderation it is fine.... My daughter loved Baby Einstein DVD's but I never used them as a babysitter...more like a 'digital book'. It never affected her language or speech to my knowledge: at 9 months she started talking and she spoke a sentence as her first 'word': "What is this?" and she has never stopped chattering since. She will be two next month and already has a very large vocabulary and she now finds Baby Einstein boring. By the way...some of the Baby Einstein books are quite good such as 'The ABC of Art'.

Some kids are put infront of ABC tv (dont know what other country equivalents are) from a few months old, to watch Brum, Thomas the Tank engine, Angelina ballerina and that sort of useless brain-numbing yet addictive viewing. I babysat a kid when I was 23 who was like this.... all he did was sit infront of this drivel, and when there was no more TV to watch, he watched videos like "Fern Gully" over and over and over again. Easy to babysit, but I didnt want such a couch potato experience for my own kids. I havent seen Between the Lions (it's a US program), but they sell videos of it under homeschooling ebay sellers, so it must have some merit academically. And baby Genius isnt fantastic either, but it is better than Thomas the Tank engine...what on earth does that teach? Not even so much as a nursery rhyme. I've been checking out Baby Genius again after many months not bothering, and hey, it's great for teaching spanish as it has the DVD in English and Spanish, and the nursery rhymes one has the words across the bottom as the songs are being sung.

I've borred them from my local library - haven't found them that great.  I guess if your child enjoys watching them and doesn't enjoy any of the other programs eg. tweedlewink or YBCR - they're better than nothing.   A few of my girlfriends' children don't enjoy watching them either (ages between 16 to 22 months).

I would rather have my child watch nothing. There are many other DVDs out there that are much more educational, and I'm sure that there is one that a baby would be interested in.

I rented a couple from the series from our local library. I am glad that I did, I was not a fan of them - I would rather there be more concrete learning opportunities if I am going to purchase any videos or DVDs. Unfortunately, my husband is the type that has to have the TV on for "background noise" and he is a stay at home dad with our son. I am really concerned that the TV is always on and my 3 month old son already is glued to any TV like screen (Cell phone, computer monitor, TV) and he does not watch anything that would be beneficial to our son.
