Brainetics- Anyone heard of it? Use it?

We have this. My mom bought it to use with my younger siblings but she doesn't use it. I took a look at the package and I think it is equal parts gimmick and program. Which is a bad ratio for a $150 product.

In all fairness, I haven't used the product yet, because it isn't mine. My mom keeps swearing she's going to use it any day now, but I'm waiting to watch/use it along with my younger siblings.

If it is for you, then I recommend instead a book on mental math as a better value. i have no idea how this would work for a young child or toddler but I dont think it would be successful as it's meant to be used by a child 4th grade and up, I will take another look at Brainetics because its been a long while since I've looked at it.

I bought a book called Mathemagic: Secrets of Mental Mathematics that I have been reading a bit every now and then and am actually reaping benefits from. I'm going to try and be more regimented in my self-study of mental math, but I think that my $15 dollar investment was better than my moms 150 dollar investment. A good deal of the tricks that I saw in brainetics weren't really useful, but the book teaches you to do Math problems in a different way, right to left and walks you through the steps and gives you practice problems. Its an easy read and it is was one tenth of the price. I played 15 bucks INCLUDING shipping, my mom paid 150 PLUS shipping.

I'm going to get a time and put myself through several workbooks of math pages to cement and develop my own abilities in mental math. I practiced a few nights ago doing singlexdouble and doublexdouble-digit multiplication, addition and division and on a few occasions I was able to beat or tie my younger sister who was using a calculator. (admittedly, the calc is poor quality and she's pretty slow but whatever, I need every ounce of confidence I can get!)

I just did some research a while back on it.  Brainetics is more or less the wheel reinvented.  It is based on Vedic Mathematics (which Chris1 gave a link showing that Vedics math has no history in actual Vedic philosophy or documents).   Its more or less just a bunch of fun short cuts which generally can be found relatively inexpensively on line.  It has unique number bonding.

I am sure it would be easy to come up with your own worksheets that are more friendly and attractive to an active child.   Before you can really begin Vedic math, it is recommended that they are confident in their math facts which means you can start with the concepts starting in the 3rd grade or as soon as they have mastered their math facts. 

What I will tell you is that "Vedic" math does make math more interesting.  I find it tickles the mind so to speak.
