Deluxe, all the way! If you check out my youtube link below, you will see some videos of my son reading brillkids books that came in the deluxe set to give you an idea of what they look like. It's only a difference of $50 so for 25 books it is well worth it! With my daughter, she had a difficult transition from flashcards to books and we ended up using sentence strips and some other silly games to get over the intimidation of stringing words together. (These books did not yet exist when I taught her). With my son, I used these books and it was a BREEZE! These books remove intimidation factor entirely because they draw on words taught in the curriculum and teach at the very beginner level. They are PERFECT for teaching little ones to read. Big font, lots of spacing, and so on, with minimal words on a page unlike most beginning readers.
My advice is get the Deluxe for sure, and then do a monthly payment plan on the Little Math if you need to, but definitely get the books. They will set your child up for success and I think they can make or break a reading program for some kids. At the very least they make the transition from screen/flashcards to flipping the pages of a book much, much easier.
To gauge progress without testing too much, you can turn it into a game. You can play matching games with toys, play food, etc, and see if your child spontaneously matches them before you do. It's all about how the child PERCEIVES if they are being tested or not, or if they think they are playing a game. If they find it great fun to bring you toys and have you write them names on the magna doodle, and then later that game turns into YOU writing the names on the magna doodle and THEY bring you the correct toys, what difference does it make if it's fun?
