I see a number of you use Classical Magic. Does anyone use Beethoven's Wig? The two seem to have the same concept. I'm trying to choose which one to get. It would help if someone has already compared the two.

Thanks!

I've never heard of it. Do they have a website? We love classical magic. Gabriel gets so excited when I ask if he wants to do his music lesson. He smiles and dances when he hears the songs.

We have Classical Magic--Themes to Remember Volume 1. I love it!!

It's helped me learn to associate songs with their composers, and it's so much fun. Super easy, too. I don't have to do anything but listen to the songs!

We bought ours at a homeschool conference for around $20.  yes

Here's a video on one of the songs from Beethoven's Wig Vol 4, "Beep Beep Beep (Moonlight Sonata)" on YouTube:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/21LtgAO0dx4&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/21LtgAO0dx4&rel=1</a>

They do have a website but for some reason it wasn't available today: http://www.beethovenswig.com/

If you add words, you're changing the music.  Isn't that a small problem?

Call me a purist, but I find that these presentations, which use the original pieces, hold my little boy's attention pretty well.  He's listened all the way through, completely fascinated, to Pachelbel's Canon, Ravel's Bolero, and a number of others.  To make things a little more interesting, we look at YouTube videos of the musicians playing these pieces (I've added YouTube links only starting around #4 though).  He has said he wants to be a conductor (he's very impressed by conductors).

Your mileage may vary, obviously...  Wink

I am sorry i did not mean that!!!!My point was not the music but the lyrics. Both are equally good in case of music. But from my point of view i like more Beethovens's.

Sorry, Sapna, I didn't mean to criticize.  I just wanted to point out that there is another perspective on this that people might want to consider.  We might want to try out Beethoven's Wig etc. ourselves, just to see...

The point of the lyrics is to help you remember the composer, name of the song, and when it was written. For example, Handle's water music has lyrics that say "Let's play the hornpipe, for Handle's music, his royal music, the water music. King Geoge is having a ball he says come one and come all. He says that Handle will play..."

So it really puts the pieces in perspective.

Interestingly, my 2 yo was humming the songs but not singing the lyrics.

Personally, I don't see it as that big a deal. For me, it's all about what she gets her attention/interest more. Obviously I would prefer that she likes the original pieces more, but I would suspect that she'd probably really enjoy that 'beep beep' version of the Moonlight Sonata more (hilarious, btw!), esp if we can also talk about the story that's told and have a laugh over it.

I think the idea is probably to get them more interested in classical music, and then in time, you play them the original piece and it would hold more meaning and interest for them ("hey, it's that 'beep beep beep' song!").

btw, when I was young, I loved the William Tell Overture, but thought it was the "Lone Ranger" song as it was the theme song used in that v old TV series. Many years later, when it was played in our music class years later I made a fool of myself by identifying it as "The Lone Ranger" song!
 LOL

I personally like classical magic, although beethoven's wig looks fun too. Just like texas mom says i like how it gives some historical information, not just the name of the piece but often when or for what purpose it was composed. The books that go with it have wonderful little biographies of the composers, identification of musical terms and suggested activities for some of the songs.  I have never used beethoven's wig so I am unsure if it als contains these elements but those are some of the things I like from classical magic.
