Has anybody used the program "Hooked on Phonics"?

We bought this program for our daughter but we are not sure how good this program is and if we are using it correctly.

If someone has used it and can give us some inside, it would be very appreciated.

I use HOP. coincidentally that's what we're watching at the moment.

I used it to teach my son to read when he was 4+, and it was really amazing cos he went thru the levels really quickly and he's a really good reader now. It just teaches letter sounds and blending and it teaches it in stages so the child can build up steadily. there's also a good reward system that makes it exciting for them and he actually used to look foward to the next lesson. I got the HOP for babies for my Lo who's 3months old, basically at that level HOP is just to stimulate a love for reading and not really teaching. She enjoys listening to the songs. It's useful if you want to teach phonics.

By the way how old is your daughter?

Thank you for your feedback. My daughter is 3 and a half months old. I got the baby HOP, but I'm just not quit sure how it will work long term. I started using it about two weeks ago. It just feels is the same stuff over and over and I'm affraid she is going to lose interest in it. I have to say Valerie loves the Itsy bitsy spider song and loves it when I do the moves with the song. How often do you play it to your kids? I just want to make sure I'm doing it correctly.

I think 3.5 months is way to young to be introducing a phonics program. I don't think a baby that young should even be exposed to TV yet. I would start with YBCR at about 4 months old, and I would wait until later to show HOP. Just my 2 cents.

Thank you so much for your input. We started when she was 3 months old because the HOP for baby says is for 3-18 months. At what age do you think children should start with a program like that? What is YBCR?

I have read in other forums about not using Baby Einstein, but they recommend other programs. What is your reasoning behind babies at that age not being exposed to tv? This is my first baby and I'm trying to figure out what I should and I shouldn't do.

the baby HOP is not really any formal teaching, its just songs, she loves the itsy bitsy spider as well- i do too! we just play it in the background while she's on her bouncer or something. the real phonics teaching starts at age 4. it's actually called hooked on baby for age 3-18mths.

I have'nt used HOP but just wanted to clarify, YBCR is Your Baby Can read program. I have'nt used phonics but am just starting to introduce them through basic songs. I use the song : this little squiggle says aaa, aaa,aaa and sing it to the tune of mary had a little lamb, my child is surely hooked on it! hope that helps

My mistake, I didn't know HOP had a baby program, in that case, I'm sure it's fine, although I cannot comment on the content since I have never seen it. YBCR is a reading program for babies and young children. Many of the parents on the forum have used it and gotten great results (including me). You can do a search on the forum for YBCR or Your Baby Can Read, and you will get many threads to look at for more info.

For teaching letter sounds, I think Letter Factory (LF) from LeapFrog is much better than HOP-Preschool because LF is more fun.   I have a great result from LF.  My son (when he was 4 yrs and 2 mos) learned all the letter sounds by just viewing couple times and my daughter (2 yrs and 9 mos) learned all the letters and half of the sounds within 2 weeks.  They enjoyed the music a lot.  Then I used HOP-Kindergarten and flashcards (too bad that I only found out about flashcards, Doman method, this site couple months ago) on my son and he likes them both.  My daughter is too young to understand HOP-K, so I only do flashcards.  I also tried YBCR, but my son found it boring.  I didn't show it constantly to them.  So, my daughter just learn one word from it. 

Right now my son is 4.5 and he start reading beginner books.  However, one thing puzzle me is my son seems to read by recognizing the words instead of using phonics although he seems to know the phonic technique.  So, can someone tell me when kids at that age begin to read, what technique do they use...phonics or memorize the words?
