I just found this DVD at the Library yesturday.  I am so excited and is very interested in using it.  I just want to know if there are any parents out there that has used it, and if so were they successful?  Were your kids able to recognize Chinese characters and speak Chinese?  I want to know before I start showing this to my child.  I don't want to show him DVDs all day if there are not benefits to them.  Thanks.

This is a message from the founder:

Message from the Founder

After reading the book "How to Teach Your Baby to Read", I started using the flash card method to teach my twin boys how to recognize Chinese characters and English words. They were almost 1 year old at that time. I found that even though my boys could not speak yet, they were able to recognize the Chinese characters after seeing them a few times. It actually took them longer to learn English words. I think my boys found Chinese characters easier to remember because Chinese words are inherently images. To them, each Chinese character is a picture that represents a certain object. It doesn't matter how complicated the Chinese character is, as long as the character relates to things that they are familiar with in every day life, they had no problems recognizing and reading the characters. By age 2, my boys were able to recognize about 100 Chinese characters. They are 4 now and they love reading Chinese books.

Chinese is a very difficult language to learn and I believe that it is important for children to build a good Chinese foundation and start learning Chinese as early as possible. The earlier children learn Chinese, the easier it is, especially in reading. As reading Chinese requires memorization, the capacity of a child to memorize is at its best when they are still babies.

With a group of dedicated parents and advice from educational professionals, we have formed a company – Chinese for Kids Ltd, to develop the flash card method of learning Chinese into a DVD series with stimulating images and sounds: "PutonGua – Baby Learns Chinese".

There website is: www.babylearnschinese.com

Sorry, I hope this is not a repeat post.  I did not find this anyone on the forums.  smile

I ran across this site after purchasing "Wink to Learn" so I didn't get it. I would love to hear what your thoughts are once you finish watching it. Wink to Learn covered the topics listed in the Baby Learns Chinese set and my son really enjoys it so I decided to stick with it smile  I look forward to your update!!

Hello,
my son isn't a "baby": he is 3.5, and we aren't using them for character recognition, but we do have Baby Learns Chinese dvds #1 and 2. I would like to have #3 as well. They are beautiful cds with high quality images, and we find them helpful to learn chinese. My son was 2.5 when we got them. He likes them, but now he is a bit older he likes dvds with "stories" more, like the Baobei the panda (Early Start Mandarin), Dora the Explorer in Mandarin, the Mei Mei Hu ones (Sing and Learn Chinese with Mei Mei, Dance and Learn Chinese with Mei Mei.

However, now that he is getting interested in reading (ABCs, numbers etc), I think I will start again with the Baby Learns Chinese, as the characters are clearly presented.

Anyways, I think for a baby or young child, Baby Learns Chinese are wonderful dvds and have a more complete selection of fruits etc than many others. Little Pim is also wonderful.

I watched the video on their web site. It's quite interesting.

However, the charater is not simplified Chinese. Triditional Chinese is only used in Taiwan, I don't know about HK.  In Mandland China, they use simplified Chinese.

Curly,
I think you have the option to show either Traditional or Simplified Chinese characters on the menu.

Yes, Baby Learns Chinese has the choice in the menu of traditional or simplified. A new set of 3 Baby Learns Chinese is just out, with new topics. You can check them at Childbook.com, which has them on sale right now.
http://www.childbook.com/Baby-Learns-Chinese-DVD-Level-4-5-6-Flashcards-p/dvd364bundle.htm

btw, http://bogeji.com also has new dvds on sale right now: Dora, Berenstein Bears, many others. I just got the sale email.

Hi interested to find out more on Baby learns Chinese.
Pls share more info. How is the DVD teaching method or presentation like?

Is there anywhere to watch a sample video or pictures of the actual show?
Many thanks in advance!

Jinjl, yes, that is why we post links: so you can see the product. Please check the one I already put, which has a few screenviews, from 4-6, and also the link there to vol1-3:
http://www.childbook.com/Baby-Learns-Chinese-DVD-Level-1-2-3-Flashcards-p/dvd361bundle.htm
There is a video preview as well. Please note that the online previews and screenshots do not do justice to the high quality of the images on the actual dvds, which are quite beautiful.

They are based on Doman flashcard principles: written characters, spoken words and iimages. Unlike little Pim it is not for learning conversation or sentences.

There is also a product sample and intro at youtube by the company Baby Learns Chinese itself:

Hi - My son is almost 2.5 and won't sit through these videos.  He was probably 22 months or so when I first started showing him YBCR and he wasn't interested in them as well - I think too active... i've put them away and have tried both every once again to see if he would become interested in them again, but to no avail....

We limit the amount of TV he watches, but we the Chinese version of Dora and he is enjoying those.  we even bought the Thomas the Train in Chinese but he wasn't interested in that either.

wish you luck!

Wow the you-tube clip of the DVD 4-6 samples looks really good.  They are expensive DVDs, as are Little Pim ... and most educational children's dvds.  It would be great if you could predict if your child will watch certain shows or not.  I am sold - I'm getting DVD 1-3 first.  I just hope my DD will sit through and watch them.  The appear to be pronounced clearly which will help in both of our learning of the language!!  Thanks for finding the clip wenjonggal!!  (Note: the baby learns chinese website doesn't appear to have information on DVDs 4-6 - but they are on the websites of childbook.com and asianparent.com)

We used Wink-to-learn. It's really great for building up word recognition and the baby's vocabulary. My baby has gone through all the DVDs at least 3x in the past 8 mths that he has been watching winktolearn.  I only recently bought the babylearnschinese.  He loves these bc they have songs, and he's delighted that he can read words from it. But to build vocabulary(much more words), and for great impact with the characters, I think winktolearn is still better - big words, great contrast.

i just viewed the samples of wink-to-learn online, it is interesting but unfortunately , it is in simpliefied chinese, so not suitable to be used in hong kong as hong kong is still using traditional chinese.
