I'm part of a reviewing focus group this year so I thought you guys might appreciate the reviews over here as well
http://www.helpme2teach.com/Helpme2teach is a
directory of only-educational websites with a search engine. You can either go through a listing of websites by topic or conduct your search inside it. There is none of the filling that you might get on your yahoo or Google search of non-educational sites.
If you are facing a problem with irrelevant generic searches on the web, when looking for educational sites for your kids or students
OR
if you are overwhelmed by the sheer number of links you get,
then in your case, less is definitely more and this internet directory is the for you.
If that isn’t the case and you navigate your way easily through google, check out these two other excellent uses for the directory.
First, search results are
color coded by age-appropriateness. So a search for crafts would bring up x number of websites, each with
a brief description and a colored dot (or dots) indicating whether it is for pre-K, teachers, high school, etc. This description and color code could scrape hours from the search and sorting process if used appropriately!
Another great use for it would be to actually
LET your kids research topics themselves through it. It’s ideal for this because all the websites are pre-selected and their content are appropriate for children, so you know your kids are safe and sheltered from the vices of the internet
Especially useful for young children that are not yet old enough to handle full-blown access to the internet.
One thing to take care of though, is that because pre-selecting is time-consuming for the owner, you might find that certain topics don’t get that much results. The site boasts over 2000 links with daily additions and updates, so that shouldn’t happen too often, but do put this in relevance with a google or yahoo search for example, to
know what to expect.
Otherwise, they are very friendly and welcome website-suggestions to be added and will do their best to accommodate you if you have a special request.
The prices are available on the website, personally I wouldn’t buy except the yearly subscription of $ 30, because then it’s only around 2.5 $ per month which is nothing really if you will benefit from what it offers. Plus, we were promised a buy one year get one free until December for the reviewers’ friends, groups, etc... so if you are interested, check it out! Two years for under $30 is quite a deal
