Hi everybody,

my daughter is 3 years old, and we didn't do a lot of math until now. She can count to 20, that's it.

Now I've read a lot in this forum and would like to try Touch Math. I saw different packages on their site. The Pre-K Complete Program costs USD 799.- and this is too expensive for us at the moment. Is the Pre-K Unit also good? Does it have everything to start with?

Which sets did you buy?

Thanks a lot for your answer!

Touch Math costs serious $$$. Not exactly a problem, I guess, but for the same cost you could get SEVERAL great programs, is there any particular reason you want Touch Math and nothing else?

Have you considered other programs? There was a review of TouchMath vs JG Math Matrix, a program that uses a similar approach in the early years but then accelerates in the latter years and goes all the way up to high school.

I have no personal experience with the program. My 1st grade cousin uses the program at his school and I have seen some of his worksheets only. He's not demonstrated anything extra special to me via math, but he's a reluctant student anyway and comes to our place after school so he's eager to forget school and play, so take the rest of my post with a grain of salt.

My cousins worksheets don't look much different from other K and 1st grade worksheets I've seen and he's not showing a lot of progress in math this year, I know last year Math was his favorite subject but thats cause he HATED reading and didn't like school, poor kid.

Have you researched other programs? In general I think that anything over 150 bucks is an obscene amount to spend on any SINGLE subject for a preschool kid. I could and have taught a child PreK-2nd grade for around that amount. I have never spent 800 bucks on anything...

I know education is priceless and all, but unless your child has special needs that make you feel strongly that TouchMath is likely the ONLY thing that will work for her at this stage, I highly advise you to do a lot of research. If you want other suggestions, just ask everyone here can help you come up with great ideas...

I think many people get caught up on the fancy word "manipulatives."  The thing is anything can be used as a manipulative, and with children its best to use something they like or very familiar with.   For example, both my son and daughter love cars.  They have tons, so they make for great manipulatives.  We count them all day long.   A calendar can be used as a manipulative.  My son counts the days of the month all day long.  Its his favorite thing to count right now.  My daughter she just prefers counting her jumps.   For subtraction and addition objects like cars, candy, marshmallows (anything yummy works but sometimes can be distracting LOL) and fruit, all work well in teaching math concepts.

Sometimes we think we need to buy fancy systems to get the competitive edge, but math is all around us.  If we take a moment, we can figure out that eating grapes can be a fun way to learn subtractions or adding groups of cars by color can teach addition and reinforce colors and organizing.  The more natural the activity the less stress for you and the more enjoyable for the child.

To add, even though I don't care for Touch Math's lack of integrity, they do have beautiful and attractive worksheets.  Without buying the whole package, you can download individual worksheets to see which worksheets work for you.  http://www.touchmath.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=WYT.welcome&page=DownloadableProduct

I will say that for a young child (3-5) the idea of using dots or objects inside the number to take an abstract concept into a more concrete one on paper is an excellent and successful tool for many.   Right now, I am creative enough to make my own worksheets applying this concept in a way that appeals to my children's interests.  You can do anything you put your mind to.   You don't have to a specialized education to apply this concept.

There are plenty of free downloadable worksheets for teaching shapes, colors and how to tell time.  There is no reason at all to pay for them.

I would get the TouchMath downloads for sure. You don't really need any of the manipulative. Then when your child is ready for Kindergarten I would suggest their downloads and computer software program, which goes for $89. Its great! My son has been using TouchMath for 2 years now and I can't say enough great things about it! And we tried TONS of different math programs before.
