Jones Geniuses Math & Reading Programs- Are you interested?

I just ordered my kit as well. I wasn't planning on ordering the reading program. However after talking to Chris about my son it seems like this program could iron out some if the plateaus we are sitting at. So only time will tell. Apparently they are a not for profit company.

I like the manipulative ideas. 

I am ordering Math 5 for my older boys.  I hope it is very helpful to them.  Chris from Jones Geniuses (JG) called this morning and was very helpful.  I was going to order Math 3, but with his help, I figured out Math 5 would work better.  

I've used the primer, Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons with my older children.  (JG will be coming out with their own primer, but they haven't yet.)  It doesn't cover all of the phonetic rules that the JG program covers (which was fine for 3 our of my 4 reading sons).  If you child catches on quickly, I think the primer by itself will work.  If learning is a little more difficult (for example, they have a difficult time remembering letter sounds), I think the program will be helpful.

I'm a little sad that my kid is too young for this program. It sounds interesting. I may have to buy it when he's older though.

The numbers with holes in them reminds me of something we had when I was a kid. They were giant plastic numbers with circles that popped out. 0 and no pop-outs and 9 had nine pop-outs. They were all different colours too. (Like 1 was red, so its pop-out circle was also red, and 2 was blue so both its circles were blue) By the time I got ahold of them they were all mixed up and a couple circles were missing.

Note to all- I just deleted any previous posts of mine responding to the creation of manipulatives at home. I don't know if that's in violation of anything or if that's giving anyway any "trade secrets" so I deleted it to be on the safe side.  So if some of my replies are missing, that is why!

I will need to word my upcoming review carefully so that it reviews accordingly without over-sharing about the program.

I ordered my kit too     .  I wasn't planning on getting English either.  But, it has some additional things that got me interested after I spoke to Chris and if I only get Math, I was not getting any discount .  So, I ordered both.  I am sure it will be money well spent.

I'm trying again...for some reason my post didn't get posted a second ago...

I have used dots and numerals in my classroom long before hearing about Dr.Jones here a few weeks ago.  Six years ago I taught a child with Down's Syndrome.  I, together with my resource teacher, created lessons for her to work with numerals and count the amounts directly ON the numerals - very similar to Dr.Jones' program that we saw yesterday.  I'm sure his Matrix is a lot more indepth than what we did in my classroom and also more indepth than what we saw yesterday.  Also, we had a foam/peg game in our classroom, and as someone else here said that they had a plastic punch out game at home growing up.  I think that numeral/amount activities is a common idea.

I think that flashcards, wooden tactile activities and even cookies are all fine.  Photocopying the Dr Jones (or anyone elses for that matter) documents and making copies of their DVDs is definitely wrong.  Even using their ideas for simple and higher order math (addition and up) without paying for it is wrong.  Again, correct me if I'm wrong, Chris,  but I think the simple numeral and amount activities that we're suggesting is okay.  I think that most of us have a good sense of right and wrong and we would hate to damage a relationship with anyone who is interested in developing educational opportunities for our children.  But please correct us if you feel it necessary.

if anyone has any questions about  the proper age of this program, i think it would be best to talk to the folks at Dr. Jones and let them know of your child's progress before you rule it out.  we started the program at 15 mo. and it is going well for us!

There has not been any breaches of copyright on this site... Nothing to worry about just making all aware  that our specific learning systems are supplied under copyright terms.
As you can imagine, in the past some people have tried to copy our systems & as a non profit organization we have to protect ourselves.

Chris- I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you to you and Dr. Jones for working with our group and taking the time to do the presentation and answer questions.  Glad to see you on the site! It's really good.

I also checked out the Classical Conversations site you had mentioned. They will being doing 2 day practicums in the spring and I plan to attend one (hopefully before we move).

I can't get too excited about this, based on what I've seen.  I'm sorry I missed the presentation.  But I'm quite surprised that after the repeated requests that the vendor list and detail the contents of the package that is for sale, nothing has been posted here on this forum or on their website.  Put that together with the fact that one cannot purchase just the math curriculum, or just the language arts curriculum, and I'm afraid it's no sale from me.  We'll continue using Singapore Math; we're doing well enough with it.
