@waterdreamer- do you have skype? DL it so I can ask you some of the things I missed because my kids were being....kids LOL. If you think your computer can handle it. It's not a big program and it only takes a second. If not, that's ok too!

Ladies!
Please, please, please  can you post more details about what happened at the webinar!
It happened to me exactly like to LilyAndOwensMom!
The moment the seninar started my daughter started  pulling me away from the computer, for one thing or the other, and with the sound being not loud enough,
I couldn't follow the discussion from a distance.

I'll try to say what I remember, then perhaps others can add on.

Dr. Jones talked the about the Math Matrix program first.  He spoke on how they teach numerals and numbers at the same time using dots on the numerals.  He teaches the children to count forward and backwards, then uses that understanding to teach addition and subtraction.  He also uses the Dot Matrix cards, that he provides with the curriculum set, when teaching addition and subtraction.  He said, at the beginning, it is important to start with the bigger number and count forward (for addition) or backwards (for subtraction).  Once they understand the concept, he has sets of math facts on something like worksheets that the children go through.  At first there are 4 problems, then 10, 20, 25, 50 and finally 100 math facts on a sheet.  After that, you move on to the Math 3 program.

For reading, he uses an animal alphabet to teach the letter sounds.  He said each letter came with a story.  You eventually work through 46 phonetic sounds so the child can decode (I think he said "attack") words.  They also teach rules, like the silent e rule and use word cards.  He showed us how the letter Y and the "ea" combination can have several different pronounciations.   They also use cards to teach sight words.  Oh, and they also use a poster to learn alphabetical order and letter names.  There is a primer that they use with the program (sold seperately).

That is a summary of what I remember.  It looks like a very well thought out program.

So...here's my apology AGAIN...

I asked Dr Jones something along the lines of "So now that you've taught us about the matrix, why would we buy the program?"  HOWEVER, I didn't like the way that I had phrased it and was rethinking how to say it when my son basically blew up!  He never responds like the way he did today!  In my haste and frustration with him I pressed Enter.  I certainly hadn't meant to offend and only realized by Waterdreamer's "patch things up" comment that I may have.  So, sorry to you all...I hadn't meant to sound like such an ignoramus!  I ended up calling my mom in a tizzy and she came over to get my son for the last half hour of the presentation!  However, my guilt about possibly ticking the good doctor off combined with the guilt of ignoring my son to the point of him throwing a tantrum prevented me from staying focused!  Sigh...so...sorry.

Well....thanks Lily and Owen's Mom!  That's exactly what I was hoping to get from him, too.  You know, like when you go to a teacher's store and you pick up a set of "whatever" for math activities and under the plastic wrap you see a photo of everything inside - the laminated cardstock workpads, the little foam circle manipulatives, the sliding number line, etc...  I just wanted a list or a picture of what was all included.  I hadn't meant it to come out the way it had...

Anyway, since watching yesterday I came up with a few ideas to start the dot thing on my own until I decide whether I'll buy his program or not.  I'm not going to panic and buy spontaneously just to get the discount.

Here they are:
1.  Easy - Select landscape on your word document. Use a simple font on the computer and print each number twice on a sheet.  Choose the option to outline the numbers.  Print on cardstock.  Fold in half.  On one numeral put the required dots (circle stickers from the dollar store - or dinosaurs, cars, fish...whatever!).  *When I do this, I'll keep the document saved and use it again later for "worksheets" for him to put his own stickers or manipulatives on...or I was thinking that I may print out one numeral per page and let him use a bingo dabber...
2.  May be more tricky - I'm going to grab some scrap wood (10 pieces - or just one long piece) and paint the numerals on them.  Then, I'll ask my dad to bore little holes or indents into each numeral according to how many dots it should have.  My son can put pompoms, stones, marshmallows (if I'm feeling really generous!)...basically anything and they won't roll out of the little divit holes.

Oooohh...and that would be so pretty, too!

I think that may be easier than convincing my dad to do another project...I tend to use him a bit too much...it's just that he's so handy...I've always got a project waiting for the right moment to be revealed (when his response will be "yes")  smile

I know what you're saying.  I am still on the fence with the program because I was really looking forward to using Right Start (mostly abacus).  I'm not sure if it would be confusing to do them together...still working that out.

I also remembered that when I was teaching, there was something in my classroom that was exactly used for this.  It was a foam block (one for each numeral - 0 to 9) that had the numeral painted on it with holes drilled straight through the numeral.  The kids were to put coloured pegs into them.  It was too young for my group of students, so it never got used...hmmm...makes me wonder if I could call the school and ask for it smile  Or, it may still be on the market somewhere.

Also  why not go to Michaels and buy the wooden number shapes and drill holes in that.  There like a buck a piece.

That's my dilemma too, as far as the math program is concerned. I want to start teaching math using the abacus at mathabacus.com and am wondering if I would be doing too much adding this program to the mix. As for the reading program, is the one he went over the only one being offered to us at a discount? My challenge at this point is finding a program to pick up where his program leaves off. I e-mailed Chris because I hadn't heard back from him also so I am hoping I will be able to discuss things further before I make any decisions. Thanks again LilyAndOwensMom for taking the time to put all of this together!! It was very informative and did answer some of the questions I had about the programs.

For english I am using All about spelling (http://www.all-about-spelling.com/)  .  I just got this two days ago. I love it.  It has magnetic letters so kids can make  the words and they have a CD with all the sounds.  Along with this I am using  readinglessons.com.  This is a free week by week lesson's.  They have a video, a pdf file and list of all the resources that are necessary for every week.  It's very easy to follow.  I love this too.

I am still on the look out for a good Math program.  I like the idea of numbers having dots and representing the quantity but what happens when we teach 11, there will be two dots??  I am not sure if I missed that part of the presentation or it it was not told.  Any ideas?

That was one of my questions, too.  I don't think he mentioned it.

Aside:  I am in the process of making shape cookies with my son (inspired by MonkiSee - Shapes dvd) and it occured to me that my mom has numeral cookie cutters.  I could use them and have my son press in raisins according to what amount the numeral represents.  It would be a great more or less lesson, too - my guess is that he'd pick the numeral 9 first! smile
