Hi DadDude,

As for missing the presentation, I think you didn't miss much, as, from what I understand, your son is beyond the level that was being demonstrated.  I had/have a few questions and Chris hooked me up with Dr.Jones (unfortunately, I won't be able to talk to him until next week as I will be out of town until then).  Dr. Jones personally emailed me quite promptly.  I'm wondering if you would get answers to your question if you would email them directly.

As for the deal, I think that you CAN buy them separately but you just don't get the discount.  I understand that if you combine the two (rdg and math) you get a $25 discount.  I, personally, am going to wait to have my questions answered and then, possibly, wait to hear what our esteemed BrillKids colleagues think after they've used it a while.

Hi DadDude,

In their defense, they did show us samples of their curriculum at the presentation.  But I do agree that they should put some on their website, too.

I'm also interested to hear how other BrillKids colleagues think of the program.  Please keep us updated.  yes

Hi,
It appears that some emails have not been received by us at Jonesgeniuses but I think any specific questions by members have now been answered. If there are any outstanding questions please let me know, you can contact me Tel.817 718 8822 or email [email protected]
We are delighted by the response by the people who took time to join in Dr Jones's presentation.
We will be doing further presentations in the future which will for the Brillkids group.

The reason we have not put up more information on this site is because we are setting up a partnership with Brillkids & that has been delayed due to KL having been out of the country. If you need more info please check out our website www.jonesgeniuses.com
Thanks again to those who took part.

Could a 2 year old participate in this program? Or is it a little advanced for a two year old as in would a two year old be expected to write answers down?

Hi Kimba,
A very good question.
A 2 yr old can be very receptive to the information in our Early Learning courses, in fact we have had younger children successfully doing our our programs. It will give them a good understanding of Math & Reading before they get to the practical stage ie writing it down.

If you need to call me my number 817 718 8822 email [email protected]

Regards,
Chris

Just got my kit today and wanted to give a quick rundown of the contents.

Math Stuff:

*Matrix Math Binder- Written step by step information on how to teach the program. It includes a brief overview about early brain development and then lists the 10 steps in the math matrix on one page, and the rest of the binder breaks down each step one by one.

*10 Posters- Has information such as the steps of the matrix and information to use with your child for each step of the matrix, some posters are for pointing and touching while counting, etc.

*Math Matrix Copy Masters & Manipulatives Folder- Includes a large binder clip full of practice sheets for copying and an envelope full of manipulatives (double sided matrix flashcards).

*Matrix Math Instructional DVD

Reading Stuff:

*Threshold to Reading Binder- Written step by step information on how to teach the program. Includes a a brief overview about early reading and the capabilities of children and then lists the 10 steps to the Threshold to reading program. The rest of the binder breaks down the steps and tools one by one including every possible phonics sound.

*Threshold to Reading Instructional DVD

*Animals of the Ark Book- A story book with an animal representing each letter sound (for example, E is for both Elephant and Eagle) and a paragraph for each animal with a variety of words using that letter sound in context.

*How the Numbers Made Friends with the Letters Book- A story book that integrates some of the letter and number concepts taught in the program.

*Animal Alphabet Mnemonics Flashcards- These match the Animal letter sounds taught in the Animals of the Ark book.

*Big & Little Letter Flashcards- Standard text alphabet flashcards with upper case letters on one side and lower case on the other.

*Primer Word Flashcards- A set of flashcards divided into four word groupings by color.  Some have two words on each card, for example one might have hid on one side and hide on the other. There are 16 double sided cards for each of the four colors. They are written with some markings or certain letters are in a somewhat smaller text to help young learners pick up on certain vowels or silent letters.

*10 Posters- 11 x 20 posters outlining the 10 steps to the Threshold to Reading and the other phonics steps/rules taught in the Threshold to Reading Binder.

My initial impressions: It seems that this program is carefully thought out. It may seem deceivingly simple in some aspects but it is very unique in others. It is very straight forward and explains each step of the programs well, it's nice to know that if you work your way through the ten steps it will provide your child with a very solid foundation in math and reading. These are not "quick fix" magic programs. These programs require you to work with your child one on one daily using lots of repetition until they master a specific step. Lots of counting and phonics memorization until they get it right- back to basics (but taught from a unique perspective), which is the best way to lay a foundation. Some of it seems simple like "what a great idea, why didn't I think of that?" especially in the math portion, but it's obvious that if you present the material properly until they master it, they will truly "get it." It is very thorough.

This is not a flashy program, the majority of the materials are copied on regular white paper in black and white (books, posters, etc). The story books are black and white with home made illustrations. This is not stated as a criticism of the program, just something to be aware of so you know what to expect when purchasing. Keep in mind this is a non-profit organization producing this program. Personally, I don't care about glossy flashcards (these are made of card stock) or high profile illustrations, I care about results. I haven't shown this to my daughter yet so we will see how she responds to it all. The binder reminds us as with any early learning, a lot of the excitement is in the parent's delivery and then the child will pick up on that and be joyous about learning as well. So, the magic of the program is in the information and delivery, not in the materials production.

I am really excited about having an actual step by step "curriculum" to teach my kids and I am glad I purchased it. Previously, I was just winging it and hoping something sank in. Now, I have a step by step guide to help me through. I am choosing to do this program and little math at the same time. LM takes so little time and so little effort, this is more "old fashioned" teaching and learning (in a good way). I think they will complement each other well.

I wonder if one could put the flashcards in page protectors so they withhold the use of more then one student?

LilyandOwensMom,

Thank you very much for your time and effort in organizing the webinar, for getting us the discount, and for that detailed review. My kit should be arriving soon - I can't wait to get it! smile Initially I was interested mainly in getting the Math program and the Speed reading program as my daughter is well into reading sentences and short paragraphs. However, after discussing it with Chris on the phone, we decided to start her off with the Early Learning program as a whole. I never really taught my daughter phonics -  she was just one of those kids who figured it out on her own after sight reading hundreds and hundreds of words. So both Chris and I thought that it would be a good idea to make sure that she has a solid grasp of phonics before starting her on their speed reading program. I too don't care too much whether a program is flashy or high-tech; I just care about results! I hope my daughter will like it as much as she likes LR. smile

Thanks again!

Do you guys have Walmart in Canada? The lady that teaches "baby school" (30 minute class once a week) laminates everything in contact paper from walmart. She says to get the GREEN not the blue, the one with the blue writing on the contact paper (on the non-stick part you peel off) is a little foggy and reflective and difficult to see through. She also said that they have posters with flags of the world near the school supplies right now for cheap, I need to go get two while they still have them. One to hang and one to cut into pieces for matching up with the poster. I did that with a states map and DD asks to do it all the time.

I was taking things to the teacher store to get laminated but it's adding up very fast at a dollar a foot so I think I will switch to contact paper and see how that goes.

I think I am going to carefully color my animal ABC cards with fine tipped markers and then laminate with contact paper to make them a little more durable and create a bit more visual interest for DD. They need to last through 2 kids.

Yep we have Walmart here. Are you talking about MacTac? You know the stuff for cupboards? I use that for small flashcards but I have messed up flashcards before with that stuff. Hiw many flashcards are included in the kit? And how big are they? I know a place that will do them for .50cents per 8x11

It's for lining cabinets and other stuff, so yeah it's probably the same thing. Now you have me worried, maybe I will go ahead and laminate these. I just realized the animal flashcards I was going to color are on green paper, not sure if that will work or not now.

The matrix, words, and animal ABC's are on half an A4 (8 x 11 standard size paper) and the plain text ABC cards are 1/4 sheets.

Animal ABC Cards- 43 1/2 page cards (I might have missed counting a couple because they were sticking together) with the ABC character on one side and the corresponding word on the other. (Picture of an Eagle shaped like an E on one side and the word eagle on the other).

Big & Little Letter Cards- 26 1/4 page cards with lower case on one side and upper case on the other.

Dot Matrix Cards- 10 1/2 page cards with numerals on one side and dot matrix on the other. Forgot to add the operations symbols as well, but they're maybe a 1/4 page tops, pre cut out.

Word Cards- 16 of each of the 4 colors so 64 1/2 page cards in all.

Thanks L&OM,
It is a very fair review, we are always looking at ways to improve our service & quality of product, therefore customer feedback is important to us.We have been looking to improve the quality of some of our items recently, while also keeping costs down for the consumer.
Do not forget we have curriculum for older children thru to SAT 's preperation which is our level 10.
We will be holding more online conferences soon for Early Learning & more advanced courses.
Please let me know any specific areas you would like us to cover.
Regards to all.
