Hi!
I saw some wonderful  KUMON "FIRST STEPS" WORK BOOKS reviews on amazon!
Can you please share your experience with them:
1. At what age they are best to be used?
2. Which of them you whould recommend?
3. Links to the websites you can buy them cheap?

TIA!
Nadia.

When dd was 2ish I got First Book of Tracing.  It's not tracing at all, it's little mazes, and practicing doing different kinds of lines you'd do in writing, like zigzags and c shapes, for example. I think it's great.  I'd suggest cutting out the pages with an exacto knife, putting them in plastic sheet things, and tying those together like books, with about 8-10 pages. Then let your kid use washable markers on them and wipe clean with a damp cloth when done.  Then you can use them over and over.  Plus, the book progresses so quickly in difficulty, it's better for my daughter to use one 'book' I make for months before I make another with the next pages.

We also have Alphabet Games and My First Book of Drawing.  I like the drawing one but she seemed to think it was boring, maybe in a couple years!  I think it was Number Games I looked at in a store when I was in the US and it looked good, I want to get it next!

I got them from Amazon.

We have the books on tracing, colouring, number games, numbers, mazes, upper case letters, lower case letters, folding, and cutting.  I started buying them for my son when he was 2+ and we worked on them by age.  Each book has a recommended age and I find that's a pretty good guide (usually).  If your child is precocious, you may find that advance on some of the books.  Like my son is good at the mazes and can do the books intended for ages above his level.

In retrospect, I should have either made him use a pencil or photocopied the pages, or done what Plarka suggested.  I think it really depends on your child's interests because my son loves the mazes, colouring and tracing. From time to time, he enjoys practicing cutting and folding (but this largely depends on mood).  He enjoys the number games but he doesn't like practicing writing.  I usually have to bribe him to do those books.  I think because the activity is tedious and he tires of it easily.

We bought ours from the local bookshop so I don't know where you could get them cheap online.

Nadia,

I, too, have been on the lookout for inexpensive Kumon books.  Should you find a website that has them at a low price, please forward that info on!

Hi!
We didn’t use Kumon before. I’ve been tutoring DD using the website beestar. It offers worksheets about all real life word problems, challenging stuff including math, English Language Arts, reading, and so on, to help kids thinking. DD loves them very much. Maybe you guys could also have a try.
I’m thinking try some more extra worksheets. This KUMON books sound nice. Thanks for sharing. smile

We use the Kumon books. At 2.5 we started with the numbers, letters and cutting. He already had a tracing book he had worked in. The letter one he did without trouble but the number one gets pretty small print pretty fast so we put that one on the back burner for a while.

Now at 4 we have the lowercase letter, rhyming words (for words/letter formation) and numbers to 120, basic addition and easy telling time (for math). He does one lesson a word book and one in a number book daily. He also has the cutting and pasting book for some occasional crafty fun.

I thought I'd bring this post back to life. Someone was wondering where to buy Kumon books.
I just ordered 12 of them (new) through bookdepository.co.uk for about 80US$, and chose this shop because shipping in free, worldwide!

For my 33mo, I ordered:

My First Book of Uppercase Letters    1
More Let's Sticker & Paste!
My Book of Numbers, 1-30
My First Book of Tracing
My Book of Coloring
More Let's Color!
My Book of Simple Addition
My Book of Easy Mazes
Let's Sticker & Paste!
Let's Color!
My First Book of Lowercase Letters
Are You Ready for Kindergarten Math Skills

She'll be too young for some of those but I believe mazes, tracing and coloring will be just fine.

Hypatia-

With tracing, per a suggestion on this site we slip the mazes into plastic sheet protectors and I loaded them into a 3-prong folder. DD can use them again and again, it has worked out surprisingly well. My only issue is that I never let her do dry erase in nice clothes because unlike washable markers, they can stain.

Love the Kumon books. I've used the First Tracing book, numbers, lower case and money. My girls have enjoyed them. Worth getting if you have a child that enjoys workbooks.
