Well as you all know I'm always looking for new products to try and teach my children and daycare children phonics. I believe that you need to stimulate the children with several different programs so they are constantly exposed to phonics. This way phonics because a regular part of their lives and they are more likely to remember and more importantly use it.
While searching on Google I found this new DVD Phonics Fantasy Dance ™ by Phonics Fantasy Theater. Your child will dance along with us as Ms. CJay and friends, who will take your child on a Phonics adventure where letter-sounds are brought to life through African Movement. Your child will use total body approach to Phonics where children are encouraged to learn by doing. They say that by using a multi-sensory approach to learning, children are more likely to learn and remember how to reading and spelling.
What I really like about this product is that is developed by both a speech-language pathologist and a theater arts educator. The camera always zooms into Ms Cjay's face so that children can see her mouth movements.
The first part is a little speech about origins of Phonics Fantasy Dance ™ was created as more of a guide for the parent than the student, so if your child is not really into that part, I would just watch it on your own time and skip to the first lessons for your child. The kind people at Phonics Fantasy Theater do recommend it is most beneficial to the student for them to watch it on sequential order.
The 19 lessons are filled with lots of repetition, delayed response, graphics and games. It allows the child actively participate.
We have been using Phonics Fantasy Dance ™ for a few weeks now. My son is not yet participating with the motions as of yet, but he does watch what Ms. CJay does, and repeats the words. I think that in a few weeks once he has a good idea what she is doing he will actively participate. Right now I know he is just soaking it in. I show one lesson every few days and he thinks there kids workout DVDs, as he has seem me do my own workout videos. So this works in our advantage because he thinks he gets to do workout videos like the big people.
I love that the video introduces African dance and culture. In the African culture dance is used as a way of communication. So it exposes your child to a whole new culture in a way you may not have been able to provide for them.
