i'm thinking of getting my son YBCR. but before i spend $200 on some thing i need to know the truth!!
is this program any good?
what do you like?
what do you hate?
how long you have been using it?
how old was your child when you started it?
and what other thing are you using to?

I think YBCR is a great product. My son learned his body parts and animals from it. I'm not sure if this product alone would ever really teach you baby to read, but that's just my opinion. I do feel, however, that it is a wonderful supplement to other programs that you may be doing.

I started showing my son when he was just under one, he is now 18 months. So, he has viewed all of the videos and we now just pick a random one to watch almost every day. I keep them in the car now. We have a dvd in the car and since we live somewhere a bit rural every time we go somewhere it usually involves at least 20 or so minutes drive. It keeps him entertained and focused.

I always recommend that if it is available to check it out at your local library. That way you get to see the product for yourself and let your little one try it out. That is what we did. I feel it is worth the purchase. I bought our dvd set off of Ebay. I didn't get all of the cards or books though. I didn't feel we needed those.

Is the program any good?  In my opinion, yes.  The DVDs are of reasonable quality.  The sliding flash cards are o.k.  The other 82 double sided flash cards and the game cards are really good.  My dd loves all the books, the 5 big flap style book and the one board book.

What I like?  DVD's are easy to plug in, my dd will watch most of it, and it gives me a reasonable 15 minute guilt free break.  My dd will bring me the books to read to her - they are her favourite books.  The flash cards are easy to handle and dd loves to look at them.

What I hate?  The sliding cards stick, making them difficult for dd to use on her own, and frustrating for me to use.  I dislike the timelines that YBCR has set out, I find my dd needed to see new information much much faster than suggested.  The music CD included is too short and uninspired.

How long?  I started about 10 weeks ago.  My dd would have been 15 months old, and now she is 17 1/2 months.

What else am I using?  I was using homemade GD flashcards starting just before her first birthday (so for about 6 months now in total).  I started using the powerpoint presentations from Billbaby about a week after the YBCR.  I started using LR about 4 weeks ago.  I also do math teaching with homemade red dot cards and now LM.  I have just started to do some physical stuff and brain gym.  I just discovered the starfall.com website so we have been using that for a few days.  Since birth I have read an insane # of books (50 plus) every day.

Success?  YES.  I subscribe to GD no testing ideas, so it is often difficult to tell.  Within one week of YBCR my daughter recognized at least 2 words (hi and wave).  Now, 10 weeks later, I have noticed she knows about 12-15 words - all words from YBCR.

I agree with SB1201 that I am not sure YBCR alone would teach a child to read, but it definately helped my dd.  The other thing I like about YBCR is because of its high quality and pretty graphics it helps motivate me to use it.

Good Luck with your decision.

i will be surprised if you find someone that doesn't like what ybcr has done for their kids.
our dd has never read like those babies on the commercials but she has a very strong vocabulary.  we started ours really early (6 mos i think?) and though we tapered out of it by maybe a year or a little more (14mos) we still think of it as the basis for what our dd can do (we saw results by 12mo at the latest).  we just got the videos... i thought, and still think, much of the peripherals can be made at home if you have the time... but that is just me.  i know that we could go back to them (and will in a few months when #2 is ready) and our dd would still be interested and i think that means something important too.
love the simplicity of the whole thing but the quality is good (for not having a big budget behind it like disney).  the concepts are great and easily attainable without being annoying to the parent (another bonus).
i didn't find negatives.
we started flash cards around 9mo, ppts at 14mo, lr @ 22mo and have always read a ton of books through out the day and chapter books at night.  another strangely helpful thing has been sesame street podcasts.  its just for understanding, not for reading but the words she understands from those are pretty remarkable. i highly recommend them for the car or grocery store.

We actually love the sliding word cards, it's so easy to keep a few in each room to pull out when needed, we also take them to church since they are a quiet toy, and take in the car for trips. My son doesn't really like the flip books, most of them are actually torn up now because he can't flip through them on his own, If he grabs the "next" page it's actually the flip up or down piece and it gets ripped instead. He has quite a few paper books and he's never ripped them because they are normal pages, turning left to right..he just can't quite grasp the lift up part in the YBCR books because it looks like just another regular page.  We watch the DVD's now 3-4 times a week. They are awesome for teaching my kid words but I am so tired of them I almost can't be in the same room anymore when they're on. (We've been watching them for 7 months with great success!) If you can't find them at the library, I would suggest renting them from blockbuster.com's online rental program. It would give you a good idea on if your child likes them and/or if blockbusters program lets you keep a movie as long as you want, then keep it for a month, send it back and rent the next one, etc.

With all that said, I would still highly recommend YBCR. It set such a wonderful foundation for us and now we are moving on to other things. We also love starfall.com.

I started with YBCR in February 09 and my son was 13 months. I really like it. We usually watch one or two dvd's in the morning during breakfast. I wasn't really sure it was working (since his hands and mouth are busy eating), but when I have the same words on LR or he sees the word eg. elephant, tiger etc in another book he growls like a tiger, or trumpets like an elephant. My son has definately started bringing more books to me to read to him during the day since YBCR. I think he understands that the words on the dvd are the same in his books and it really excites him when he comes to a word he recognises. I think it is truely worth the money. Laminted flashcards which I only do periodically every few days I printed from YBCR files in LR. The flashcards provided in the YBCR pack I've put away for now as my son likes trying to rip them up. I'm going to borrow my mums laminator again before I bring them back, or they wont last another month. ;O)

Children are amazing

They are worth every cent. I think it is an investment that you will never ever regret purchasing. Sophia has been watching the DVD's since she was 3 months old and even though she does not 'read' as well as Aleka did at 9 months (i have now completed the program) She certainly recognises some of the words and will do the actions. She finally starting to enjoy being read to and loves the sliding cards.

It is an amazing program and it will give 15-20 minutes of you time to get things doen while your baby is actually learning something.

I was wondering the same before buying YBCR ...but I have to say I am really happy with YBCR . it is really worth it!! My daughter watched the first dvd(starter dvd) for 30 days...now she can recognizes  everyword from the starter video.it amazes me...my daughter is 14 months old, thanks to YBCR dvd she knows parts of the body, animals and actions. and also we have the YBCR starter dvd in spanish in LR and she knows them.
We are really happy with it.
I love the books, the flascards ..etc.. I think $200 is  resonable for all the stuff they give you.

Does anybody know a site that I can print the YBCR flash cards from? I have the DVD but the cards would be great when we are out and about.

A friend of mine gave me the YBCR DVD's.  I've been very happy with it.  We started my baby at 16 months.  It helped him increase his vocabulary / understanding.  I show him flash cards from Monki See whenever I can and I feel that helps him too.

I say it is GOOD! Few DVD's has both the simplicity and good content that is important for baby's watching needs. My child on her eight month, recognizes the words and the spoken word. She would clap when she sees (and hears) the word "clap" and does the appropriate actions for several other words.

I too uses flashcards to supplement but I can tell she ENJOYS YBCR more than the flashcards.

I have only 3 of the YBCR DVDs borrowed from a friend and my daughter has loved it since day 1. However, I do tend to use lots of other DVDs and CDs as well to avoid boredom and keep her interest high.  Everytime she watches, she is so quiet, i almost am never sure if she has learnt the word or not.  But repetition I know is important.  however, I want to try and coax her right brain rather than left brain, hence the mix of several options (including brillkids).

She does know to read her letters of the alphabet and a few words though I am in no hurry to create a genius really!!! Just want her to love to read.  it will stand her in good stead for the rest of her life
