I had read about all these things when I was pregnant. A baby is already exposed to loud sounds in utero- mothers heartbeat, breathing, peristalsis etc. Not surprisingly, the best auditory stimulation for a baby is the mothers voice. Music is good, but a mother's singing is best. Plus with the headphones on the belly, the music may be too soft or way too loud- I don't think conducted sound measurements have been done. The sounds are also muffled (amniotic fluid and mom's skin- muscle- connective tissue layer)

In fact, some studies have shown that occupational noise exposure may cause fetal hearing loss:

There are a lot of studies done on vibro-accoustic stimulation on kids in-utero. I have always found studies contradicting each other.

That is why, when I was pregnant....after reading many articles....we decided to stick with something we knew was safe- mom's voice and singing

We did lots of singing, classical music/classical lullabies playing in the room, dad singing and playing music regularly. It was pretty amazing, when out baby girl was born, just 3-4 minutes after birth as we were relaxing in the birth pool, my husband started to sing to her, she IMMEDIATELY turned towards him and looked so at peace. Later, whenever she started to cry, he would start singing the same tunes and she would be comforted so fast! Prenatal stimulation is amazing! And yes, we just did traditional - mom, dad singing and pleasant classical music playing often, not trying to put anything on my tummy, but just dong it naturally. We loved it and it worked. I did not want it to be invasive, and having it right there on the tummy would mean the baby have no where to go if she does not like it. On the other hand, when my unborn girl did not like certain type of music too much, she would turn around in my tummy, and was able to have control and "say"

For what it's worth, I found these while looking for ways to help an adoptive Mother-to-be bond with her child while the baby is being carried by the birth mother. We all know how powerful it is for baby to hear a mother's voice for 9 long months. I think it would be very healthy for the child to begin creating an attachment with her "real mother" and not just her birth mother through audio learning.

I have been telling her about early learning, maybe she'll join us here and let us know how it worked out for her!

I think it is a sweet idea worth trying! So many things that come for granted to natural parents, are something that adoptive parents have to really work to achieve and fight for, and sometimes it does come with weighing pros and cons. While under normal circumstances I would say there is plenty ways to audio stimulate prenatally without having to have special equipment ( and prenatal interaction and audio stimulation are awesome for that!), in situations like that I would say pros definitely outweigh possible cons, thank you for giving this mommy such an idea, TmT! It can make transition for the baby much smoother and easier.
