I have heard from a local forum that Excel education resources in Australia are the best for preparing a child in English and Maths. Here is the site: http://www.pascalpress.com.au/Excel-Handbooks-Pocket-Books-and-Dictionaries-s/106.htm

Has anyone in Australia or elsewhere heard about their products? Is it that good?

Well I used them when I was a school and I turned out OK  big grin
What would you like to know?
They are pretty commonly used in NSW schools and other states too I am sure. My kids use New wave.
So are they the best? Well that's  hard to say. They are based on an Aussie curriculum and our curriculum is more comprehensive than most countries in the world. Its certainly more advanced than the US. Aussie kids seem to get a very broard education.
Excell have so many to books to choose from. In particular, I remember the math and grammar being pretty good. They are available at our local department store, so if you have specific interests or questions I can see if I can have a look for you. They are definately a textbook style. One colour, divided into sections....
I remember quite liking "the Australian Homescooling series" when i was looking for early primary supplements.
Are you Looking for a specific age? I do think their stuff gets better as kids get older, they perhaps don't adjust enough for the bordon factor of worksheets in the young children.

Thank you Manda. I am basically looking for Grade 1 Language arts (spelling, grammar, vocabulary, etc) curriculum in British English. Do those books use British spelling?
I want something which is rigorous in nature. I have seen lots of textbooks/curricula and I don't think it has so much content in it since we have already covered several of those. I am just wondering if those excel resources would meet my expectations. Do you know if there are any sites that provide 'Look inside' feature for those books.

Hmm I might have to look into these unless you could recommend something better Manda.
I am looking for some Aussie-centric books to supplemental what will fundamentally be an American Homeschooling curriculum. I think I would be doing my Aussie/American son a disservice for him not to learn a lot about my culture.

I don't know any sites that preview a page, but I shall endeavor to get you a couple of photos.
It is a good overall curriculum, not particularly Aussie centric ( from memory) but unless the format has been revamped it's pretty left brained the whole way through. Sme kids would hate this kind of workbook others will love the structure.
Excell is spiral learning, and yes it has Aussie spellings "colour" and "mum" being the importants ones smile

Ok... About vertical math operations. When I was in primary school. We always wrote the operation +/- etc on the right hand side. I thought that was just the Aussie way. But not in these books. Has anyone else done it like that?

Thank you Manda, for sharing this picture. In my opinion, it has excellent word problems. If possible, please post a picture of language arts book as well.

Now, after looking at the sample and expecting that grade 1 books would look similar, I am tempted to buy grade 1 maths and language arts. Can you let me know which books I should buy for grade 1? The site lists lots of several materials and I am bit confused. Do you know about the Signpost Mental maths books. What does it basically contain? Are these books available in bookdepository?

Ok I stopped at the local news agency today and went through the entire stand of excel books.   yes
So I must agree they do look good. Based on the sample above I think the grade one math may be a bit easy to start and progress too fast. It looks completely different to this photo. It has lots of pictures to illustrate the math concepts. I really like it. I considered buying it for my 4 year old son to do during daycare rest time, I probably will but he is halfway throuh another book ATM.( by tomorrow you will find me at the newsagents again I bet!  LOL ) at around grade 2-3 they switch to the style above. Grade 2 looks great. The math seems similar to Singapore in layout for the early years. But it has a definate Aussie style to it   big grin Whereas Singapore has an Asian style
. A photo wouldn't help as each page was vey different to the next.
The grade 1-4 grammar and comprehension books look perfect for homeschooling. The comprehension sections had a HUGE variety of short passages to read and answer questions from. Very interesting for children. It included things like instructions for melting crayon art, recipes, newspaper articles etc.
If you want to buy something each grade had a double topic book with both math and English in one. Here they were the same price as each topic separately. Most of our kids wouldn't need to Dinah an entire book on each topic for each grade so the 2 in 1 book would be perfect! Of the shelf at the news agency they are all $12.99. I assume they don't discount much more than that. Not sure if they are on book depository.
Signpost math mentals is the book my children use. So far we have completed grades 1,2,3 in it. I really like this one and have recommended it to other parents whose kids are not being challenged at school or in their homework. It doesn't take long to complete a daily section. Math mentals covers all the things we forget to teach well like time, calendars, bus timetables, word problems, reading thermometers, car tacos, fractions.... Each book gradually builds on itself in difficulty. the answers have some mistakes in them ( just so you know for marking smile )
To choose between the two, choose excel if you want it to be your main curriculum and choose math mentals if you want a supplement to another curriculum. You could do both easily though neither take that long if you do it daily. I would do both and Saxon if I was home schooling math  big grin
Warning! Neither book TEACHES the concepts. Both are practice the concepts books not teaching books.
Edit: I am not sure if the math mentals my kids do is the signpost one or not, I will check tomorrow.
