BST and ST are definitely the way to go. Read through the above threads and you will hear everyone say wonderful things about them.

I started out with a series called "Say It With A Sign" which my son LOVES, but unfortunately they only have 3 volumes. After learning all of the signs there I started with ST which are also great! Not only does the baby enjoy it, but so does my 5, 12, and 14 year old.

Hope this helps!!

I like the sound of BST for my 11.5 month old, and thanks everyone for your input. I will look at getting that one.
You can get discounts for signing time, but what about baby signing time? Is that also included?

Yep! Oh, and btw, they have a deal on the site right now. If you buy $50 worth of single DVDs, you get each one for $16.49 (which comes to be 25% off)  big grin

That's a great deal. You just can't combine a forum coupon with it.

Hi rose08,

BST and ST are American Sign language so therefore is not compatible with AUSLAN. It really depends on which one you want to teach. Some really good Australian ones are tiny talk or Australian baby hands.

Hope this helps

Thanks Kimba15,
I was wondering about that. But i'm not sure which i want her to learn. I like the ASL as it is one handed which i think would be easier for to learn but i would like her to know AUSLAN. Are you teaching AUSLAN and how are you finding it for your child to learn?

I was mainly wanting her to learn sign language as a way for her to communicate with me while she cant talk, but i guess it would be good for her to learn AUSLAN so that she can communicate with people here in australia.

Its good to know that their are Australian ones out there as i can only mainly find american ones.

Have you had experience with any of these Australian programs? What are they like? Are they like the baby signing time with music? From what i read on the site they appear to be more for the parent, but not sure as there are no reviews or previews.

Honestly, like you said, I would be more concerned with finding a way to communicate with my baby. Knowing a few basic signs can help so much. To be able to communicate with a deaf person (I have never even seen a deaf person in my 26 years of life, have you? How often would your child actually encounter a deaf person?), you would need to have pretty extensive knowledge of the language. You can learn a great deal from the DVDs if you're willing to spend hundreds of dollars for all of them, but there would still be so much more you'd need to learn to carry on a conversation with a deaf person. It sounds to me like you are on a limited budget, so I assume that you want to get a few DVDs to learn some basic, everyday signs. I wouldn't be concerned with what program it is. I would just be concerned with learning some signs with my baby so I can understand his wants and needs.

Havent got any signing time dvds yet, due to the current exchange rate between Australia and US, but as I've said before I'm fond of My Baby Can Talk (MyBabyCanTalk.com) which have a few 45 min dvds, Baby See'N sign (Babyseensign.com) also at least 2 45 min dvds.  Both have lots of signs. (ASL). Got them thru ebay stores. Brainy baby have video "Talking Hands", 45 mins ASL but cant tell U about it as cant find the video!! See brainybaby.com.  There's a video for yourself, which teaches YOU lots of signs, "Sign with your baby" (www.sign2me.com)... and some of the Baby Einsteins have sign language on them...

Hi rose08

I have had experience with tinytalk and it i fairly good it is based on AUSLAN. Aa far a I am aware the Australian baby hands and Tiny talk dvds are based toward the parent showing you alot of AUSLAN sign and teaching you how to incorporate it into everyday life.

I have ound it fairly easy to incorporate AUSLAN baby sign language into everyday life, It is not any harder to learn than ASL. It jut that ASL i probably more convieniant because of its one handed system as AUSLAN baby sign language is has some signs that require 2 hands.

A really excellent baby sign language site is www.bilby.net  It has a huge range of baby ign language stuff and they are very resonably priced.

To answer your quetion have you ever encounted a deaf peron? Yes I have, When I was in year 2 we had a deaf girl in our class and we all had to learn sign language to communicate with her, in my early 20's I worked with a peron who was deaf and because of my knowledge of sign language I was able to communicate with him.

Also many of the school in Queenland are introducing AUSLAN sign language to be taught to all student from the time the enter reception (age 5). All teaches are fluent in sign language and spend the whole day signing to their students while teaching subjects.
