Hi Rose08,

I have seen the Tinytalk DVD (borrowed from my local library).  I also have read Australian Baby Hands and Baby Signing 1-2-3 by Nancy Cadjan (ASL), once again from my local library!  All three share the theme of why sign language is good to teach your child.  I particularly liked Cadjan's book beacuse it talks about how to use the signs in day to day life - but all the signs in the book are in American Sign Language.  It also has a bibilography of good books to read and sign to your baby.  Tiny talk appears to be mainly Auslan but also uses some of the single handed ASL signs - I guess it's out of convenience when you're carrying the bub?

Have you tried your local library or a nearby library (I appreciate that you're outside a capital city)?  Most libraries have online catalogues - and you don't have to live in the council to become a borrower.

Cheers!  mtb999

Hey Rose08

I have just checked bilby.net and they have wiggle dvds and other dvds that have sign language caption plus the word appear on the screen, might be worth checking it out.

Also I have written to the ABC about starting our own Baby Signing Time and let them know that USA ha a how that is very successful, so fingers crossed that they consider doing this.

That would be great if ABC would do that...I'll keep my fingers crossed. I too have had experience with a 'tiny' bit of sign language. I worked in a nursing home...just as kitchen staff for a bit, and a lovely gentleman was there who had had a stroke and had to learn how to walk, speak etc...so he used sign language to communicate.

I understand your point of view about learning the national sign language for my country as well as what nhockaday has to say about me just wanting to communicate.

I have a lot to think about, but thank you for all your research and feedback, and if you hear back from ABC let me know. smile

Baby einstein "MY first Signs" is good, it has the word at the bottom, a picture on the right side, and Marlee Maitlin the deaf actress doing the sign on the left. It's ASL, and has babies and colourful things happening to keep the kids attention. And it has the option to play it in different languages. I bought 25 baby einstein dvds off ebay in a pack, so it was very inexpensive that way!! And some of the other DVDs have some sign on them, and also some have  the option of choosing to view it in another language..

I dont think an Aussie kid learning ASL is bad, because there's a lot of overlap, and a lot of signs are self-explanatory.  Some "baby signs" arent either language, they're made up for kids.  Doesnt mean an adult deaf person wouldnt understand them... flapping arms for a bird is obviously a bird. Deaf people are deaf, not dumb. Or if they are deaf and dumb, it's mute dumb, not stupid dumb. And if a deaf person wanted to go overseas they are likely to brush up on that country's signing, just like I might brush up on French if I went to France.

I have been using the Baby Einstein sign dvd after misplacing it for months, for the last 2 or 3 days, and today Azaria added to her 4 signs that's she's known a while and hadnt been adding to.  Today she signed cereal, baby, eat and Hot. In one day!! Learned 4 extra signs.

Hi Rose- I have a small holistic preschool/daycare, and I've been very very happy with the Signing Time and Baby Signing Time DVDs. I've tried a few other programs, but Signing Time is by far the most popular with my students. I started them with my own son when he was about 6 months old, and he regularly signs to me now at 12 months. The 2 and 3-year-olds in my program LOVE Signing Time, given the catchy songs and great visuals. Even my husband has learned some basic ASL by sticking around when I've been playing the DVDs.

If you are interested in a DVD for yourself to learn a good deal of ASL vocabulary, I recommend Living Language's "Getting Started in Signing" (Dr. Elaine Costello). I have used their DVDs and books to catch up on signs my students ask me about.

As earlier posters mentioned- programs like these are best for learning basic vocabulary in ASL. If you want your child to sign more fluently, often times there are Signing Time playgroups (including internationally), or even schools for the deaf where you might find opportunities to join playgroups with deaf families.

nhockaday.. is that signing time special deal you mentioned in this thread a few days back still on?? I looked on their site but it didnt seem to be mentioned.  I dont quite get the coupon thing here either... something to do with $50, 2 dvds...2000 points... it was as clear as mud to me. Can U explain it in simple terms, so I can figure out what's the cheapest way to buy 4 baby signing dvds...

No, the special I was referring to was for March only. I don't see that they have any specials at the moment except for some marked down bundle sets. The coupons in the forum are as follows--save 50% (sold out); save 25% on one item ; and save 10% on one item. It may let you use the codes on more than one item, it did for me.

Can you let me know when the 50% coupon is useable again? (It will be useable again, wont it?) Or they have another sale. It's nearly $40  US which is like $55 Aus to post 4 dvds to Australia.. perhaps they might consider a cheaper postal rate.. standard international flat rate, and discounts for buying in bulk...
The shop doesnt actually say the 50% coupons are sold out...
From what I'm gathering to buy 4 dvds I can use the 50% for 2 dvds, and the 25 and 10% for 1 dvd each.  But if I had a lot of points, I could buy 4 dvds with two 50% coupons.  Right??

No, the shop does say it's sold out. I just looked at it again. And it's up to the people from ST to give us more coupons. That is something the admins will have to get in contact with them about. Also, you can only use one discount on the ST site. If they have a sale, you will only get the sale price. If you you use a coupon code, it will override the sale price. You cannot buy something on sale and use a coupon code. I have already tried it.

They always run a deal where you can buy 3 DVDs of your choice and get 10% off. Also, like I said, many of the pre-made bundles are marked down to good prices right now.

Also, their shipping is actual cost within the US (they are definitely not making any money off it. I bought 10 DVDs and it only cost like $5 to ship media mail) , so I'm sure it is pretty close to actual cost to ship elsewhere. I know it is expensive to ship to Australia, I have shipped there before, so I'm sure they aren't charging extra, but charging what it cost.

They need to look into Flat international standard rate, as items up to 4 pounds can go in one cheap parcel.  I've done this on ebay several times, and postage was cheap. Some sellers on ebay I just wouldnt buy off because they refused to do that rate and chose the much more expensive rate. Yet it really was no skin off their nose to use the cheaper rate... wasnt costing them anything. And the parcels always arrived. And I see good deals on sign dvds going on ebay US, but the sellers refuse to send overseas.. so I'm stuck.
Everyone...Dont ever do British surface mail... 1 in 3 parcels made it to me, and due to how long it takes (over 2 months) it voids paypal claims.

I bought 6 Signing time dvds off Amazon itself (not the other sellers on there) and postage to australia was $2.99 US per item, and $4.99 for the entire lot as one shipment, so $23 US. That seems to be the cheapest way to do it postage wise, but unfortunately that means the DVDs are all Region 1, not Region 4, which theoretically should work in a universal (region-free) dvd player, but that may not be guaranteed, as some people put special region encoding locks on their dvds so they CANT and WONT play in universal DVD players!!  Now I thought the person who first thought up having REGIONAL dvds was a nincompoop, but for someone to try to thwart the overriding of the regions has to take the cake for being a right royal pain in the butt. Does anyone know how to get around this latest obstacle??

My baby is only 5 months old. I think she may know some of the signs right now, but she is too little to sign (Is this right? or am I just kidding myself?  wub  )  I'm not sure how long I'm supposed to show her the same video. I want to have an idea so I can get the next dvd. confused
