I always do layers with my kiddo, 2-4 layers depends on the weather. If it's hot, I take some off, and if it's getting cold, he is warm enough from the clothes I put on him. We live in Canada and it's freezing over here.
I normally buy plain white or black pullovers and put his summer t-shirts on top of those. I can do mix and match with that.
For your 6 months old, buy plain color onesies and make sure to buy larger size as babies grow too fast.
I would buy as big as 12-8 months or 18 months up if I were you.
