Hi all,

We'll be doing reviews of early learning-related products in the near future.  These could be anything from DVD's, books for parent, books for child, software, online tools, flash card sets, educational toys, etc. etc. - basically any commercial product that someone interested in early learning and teaching their child may be interested in reading about.

Please help us by suggesting such products (even if you're the maker smile )!

Specifically, you could help us by:

1. Listing out all early-learning related products that you use and recommend; and/or

2. Listing out those early-learning related products which interest you and you'd like to know more about.

It doesn't matter if someone else has already listed them. Seeing repeated mentions would also give us a good guidance to prioritize reviews.

(Feel free to link to a product page if necessary/appropriate).

Thanks very much!

I haven't viewed every single DVD in the series, there are quite a few, but we are loving the "Baby Signing Time" and "Signing Time" DVD series right now.

After only a few viewings I have noticed that my 11 month old is more willing to copy the signs, even though I have been doing these with him for quite a while. I think the repetition and songs make it more fun for him and seeing other babies and children do it is nice also.

My 5 year old also likes this series and is picking up the signs very quickly.

I also wanted to add that the video includes the printed word for each sign that is covered. I feel that this is a great compliment to our reading program as well.

I would love to see an objective review of the "Learning Mathematics with the Abacus" book series. I have gone back and forth about whether or not to buy these. I haven't seen any reviews from others about them, as I think they may be fairly new.

I am also interested in WinktoLearn and would love to hear from others who purchased it or know about it. I am in the process of teaching my son chinese, but I have been doing everything on my own and would love some outside resources.

I have used the following programs:

Tweedlewink (started when baby was 16 month I think)
Your Baby Can Read (started a week ago)
WinkToLearn (learn mandarin) (started almost 3 weeks ago)
Little Reader  (started when the program is on trial version but not often because I am out of time to create any customized flash)
Home made flash cards (started when baby was 6 month but not consistent)

So far, my daughter (23-month by this Friday) likes YBCR the most, then WinkToLearn, then Tweedlewink.

For the home made flash cards, she used to love it and I have actually videotaped one clip that she recognizes some words before 8 month.  But now if I show her those words again, she seems to forget all.... oh well.

I have just ordered Wink to Learn chinese DVDs and I am really interested to see what they are like.  I emailed them with a couple of questions and I have to say that the reply was very quick and they seem to conduct their business in a very professional manner. They also have free international postage (this is great as I live in Australia). The prices are also good in comparison to other programs available.
They are due to bring out Wink to learn English very soon which sounds really good. The program seems to compliment the Doman method of teaching.

Tina, how long do each wink to learn chinese dvds go for? Also, do you speak mandarin at home. We do not speak a second language at home and I would like to expose my son to a couple of different languages at a young age. However, I am not sure how effective this will be considering that I can't really converse with him in another language (It is recommended to expose a child to the second language 30% of the time).
I would also like to teach him French. Does anyone know of any dvd progams available that are presented in a similar a similar way to Wink to learn (word flash then picture - Doman method)?

My son loves Little reader and I have shown him YBCR from 6 weeks and he always giggles and smiles when he hears the intro music. We also have other YBCR products which he likes (lift the flap books, slide cards, game cards).
Babybit looks good, but I would like to know where I can find information on the content of each dvd. I have emailed them so hopefully I will hear back soon.

Hi Narelle,

Yes, I am from Canada and I actually bought the Wink to Learn chinese DVDs from http://www.acceleratedlearningmethods.com/chinese-for-kids.html.  People are very nice!

You can click on that website and view some samples.  There are 6 discs in total and I am still on disc 1.  For each disc, there are 6 different lessons, for example, body parts, fruits, animals, nature, actions, and numbers.   Each lesson last for about 2 to 3 minutes.  It comes with a parent guide that tells you how to start at different age.  For my baby, the suggested guide is to start on one lesson from level 1 at least twice a day then progress to two to three lessons a day once your child is comfortable with the program.  And we are suggested to complete one level in one month.   I speak Cantonese at home and I personally know mandarin.  So, I would repeat whatever is shown on the screen!   I believe it's ok if you don't speak mandarin because it's most important for the baby to understand.  Also, it's very easy to understand as it first shows pictures then words.    The background music is really cute and my baby loves it whenever I show her the DVD.  Since I play it on my computer and now, she can actually open the DVD case, grab the disc, open the DVD-ROM and put the disc there!!  You can tell how eager she wants to watch it!

As for other languages, I have one disc from Tweedlewink that shows 6 languages (i.e. French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Russian, English).  Each lesson last for about 7 minutes I think.  And it contains different topics, like shapes, colors, animals, fruits and vegetables, and vehicle.  I found this one quite good!  I personally only know English among the 6 languages!!   You can visit http://www.rightbrainkids.com/component/page,shop.browse/category_id,24/option,com_virtuemart/Itemid,26/

Hope it helps

Thanks Tina,
I will have a look at the tweedlewink language dvd. It may be a good place to start for teaching French.
If anybody knows of a more extensive dvd program (in Doman style) to teach babies French please let me know.

I have received a reply from Babybit. I was after more information regarding the content of the dvds. Only volumes 1 and 2 are currently available in English, but 3 and 4 will be available within the next few months. The contents of the dvds are as follows:

Thanks Narelle

Is BabyBit using right brain method as well?  I just wonder besides YBCR is using left brain method, are all others using right brain?

Thanks
