For the past couple days we have been using Reading Bear Program http://www.readingbear.org/

and we ( me , DD 29 months, DS  9 month)  think that it is just awesome!

Some of the best things in this life are free  smile , so is this program!

I started to show it to my DD, not expecting much, as she never was a CVC word fan: always turned her heard during Pattern Phonics part of LR lesson, hated Flesch cards ppt, etc.
She was INSISTING on the second presentation, after we were done watching the first one. I think what makes it so attractive that the words are sounded out AND their meaning is explained using picture, video, and by using the word in the sentence!
DadDude has a video on youtube 15 min long combining "short a" presentation in one clip! Awesome! We want more of those! The video is a big hit in this house!

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/fqXBcQFgh3Q&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/fqXBcQFgh3Q&rel=1</a>

DD  started sounding out letter sounds while using Reading Bear for the first time, without me even explaining her anything!
The funniest thing that my 9 month old son crawls with a rocket speed to the computer, one he hears Reading Bear is on.  smile

My personal opinion, combining Reading Bear and Little Reader lessons you will get the best of 2 approaches to teaching reading: whole words and phonics!

Try it for yourself and share if you like it!

Yay!  This makes my day!

I want to PAY someone to make more of those videos, just like that one.  If you have Camtasia Studio, you can probably do it.  If nobody here takes me up on this offer anytime soon, I shall be forced to advertise elsewhere...just message me and name your price (with reasonable market rates of course).

I'm biased, but my 15 month old is too little to be biased: he loves Reading Bear.  He has seen YBCR enough now and is bored.  He isn't that enthused about LR, although he will stick around most of the time for that.  But when he comes anywhere near my office, he says, "Beah! Beah! Beah!"  He just loves it!

One way or another he has learned to read anything he can say.  He can't say very many words yet, but he can read all of them.  He can also indicate other things that he can't say, like he touches his nose when he sees "nose" and he meows cutely when he sees "cat."  He also knows his name.  Anyway, so far, so good.

Sorry I don't have presentations 15-20 done yet.  Making them is quite simply a slog.  I'm very seriously thinking about trying to hire someone else to finish the job for me so I can focus on new software and writing scripts for books.  Also, I'm going to make videos of the 150 powerpoints that I've uploaded here on LR...well, that's what I want to do, we'll see.

Actually thank you Nadia for reminding me about it  yes  Last time we watched it she wasn't interested in it very much but I let her watch it today and she liked it  smile .
I also showed her the youtube video but it is quite long for us she lost interest on a word van. I played it to her in bed in the morning hoping to get another 15 minutes  LOL .

Anyway it is great product Dad Dude and will be using it often now. I love that we can see the lady pronoucing the words. I wish I knew how to use camtasia that I could help as this is something I would love to know also for making videos in our native language as there is nothing nothing in my country yet. After we use it for a while to see my dd reaction and progress blush I will review it on my blog. People staring to get the importance of teaching english to their children here so I am sure you will get many new users soon.  And also it is free - what a great bonus!!

@ DaDDude: I can not say enough how grateful I am to you for creating such a high quality program.
everything in the program: structure, audio, images and videos are top notch material.
You gave us Quality of programs like Rosetta Stone Which cost from $200 to $500 for free.
Thank you.
I am also very excited to hear that your PPT books will be made into videos!
We started to use them last week: "Bad Weather" and "Ages of Man".
They are a little advanced for us, but my DD enjoys them !
I really hope that everyone interested to teach their child to read will give it a shot.

@lelask  Start with small presentations, always stop it before your daughter gets bored!
It is just if you would go to gym, if you do too much exercise at the first day,
next day all your body will be hurting and you will not go back to exercises soon...
Slow and steady! the program is awesome and if you follow through with it both you and your child will learn a lot!
Also I advice to bookmark it and pin it to your bookmark bar,
like this every time you open the browser you will see Reading Bear bookmark and will remember to practice!

Happy Learning!

I have to second that.  Reading Bear looks very professional -- and it's amazingly free!

The woman who pronounces the words and does the voiceovers nails it, managing to be neither dull nor obnoxiously animated.  Her voice is also very clear and soothing.  The pictures and video are great, and of course each word being underlined as it is pronounced is fantastic.  And then there's the art and musical interludes -- icing on an already delicious cake!

This morning after doing DadDude's flash cards, my little guy started mimicking the boy swinging a bat in the "a" section on Reading Bear and headed down the hall toward the computer indicating he wanted me to follow him.   I confirmed by asking him if he wanted to watch Reading Bear and he nodded wholeheartedly.  How great that he initiated it!  (He shows interest in a lot of other things as well, but never his Doman cards, as much as I wished he would have!)

DadDude, you've been an enormous help to me in answering a multitude of questions, I really appreciate it.  And thank you again so much for your wonderful contributions!

Here they are ( all of  them are PPT presentations)

GloriaD files: Phonics DD (no sound)
http://forum.brillkids.com/downloads/?sa=myfiles;u=4872;pg=2

and here is the link to some more created by annisis:

http://forum.brillkids.com/downloads/?cat=194

Enjoy!   But I do think that Reading Bear is way better than these  files...

I have been using Reading Bear.org to practice phonics with my DD for a week now .
( I was showing Reading Bear youtube video of short "a" presentation every other day; plus  a , b, or c part of  short "a" presentation once a day. )
Today I decided to quiz her. She was right 8 times out of ten!
I recommend to everyone to give this program a try!
What I like about this program after using it  for a week is that it is Very Versatile! :
you can pick your own settings to suit the attention span of your child.
For example I am sure for my DD level would be very beneficial to see the presentation on  "Sound It Out Slowly" mode,
but I did not start to show her the presentations on that setting , I wanted her to get interested in program and picked ''Sound It Out Quickly" mode.
You can even start showing it on the "Audio Flashcards" mode !

If you will get interested and decide to start using it with your child I encourage you to read
"How to get started with Reading Bear Guide" first and try to use the software yourself to see how it works and what is the best way to present it to your child!
The Following Chapters of the Guide you must read  yes
1.How to Get the Most from Reading Bear.
2.The Reading Bear Software.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the feedback, Nadia!

lelask, see http://www.larrysanger.org/reading.html for the flashcards all in one .doc file.  Of course, Gloria made those PowerPoints that NadiaD linked to with my blessing (they're Flesch's word lists, after all, not mine).  Some people say they and/or their kids like the flashcards more than the site!

@DadDude
My son has really enjoyed Reading Bear and I am looking forward to starting it with my daughter. At what age did you start showing it to E?
My daughter is 6 months. Early on I just exposed her to lots of books. About a month ago we started YBCR and LR, LM & LM and she seems to be very interested in them (lots of smiles). She seems much more focused than my son was at the same age.
I would love to know what activities you focused on with E when he was younger (say 6 months) and how often. I guess I should go back through your blog posts too.

@seastar - thanks so much for the feedback. This sort of thing makes me think I haven't entirely wasted my time!

Hi NBailey, just noticed this. I have been busy...working on Reading Bear.  big grin

I test-drove almost everything with baby E., so, since he was 8 months or so? But we didn't get very regular, like every day, until about three months ago (19 months). Since then he's been asking for it by name, often two more more times a day. Before he was 18 months or so, he would look at it with some interest but often tune out or get down halfway through a presentation. I am too lazy (and busy) to start a regular regimen and follow my kid around to see when he'll be enthusiastic, he has seen it more or less when he's requested it. What has made a big difference is (1) E. knows the alphabet (I still don't know how much--certainly most of it) and (2) he is now able to talk and repeat back words very well.

Other kids have learned faster than H. & E. But E. is pretty much in line, maybe a bit ahead, of where H. was.

I'll give a more detailed report about E. pretty soon. Probably not before August 21, which is the due date for finishing Reading Bear!
