I know a lot of parents here use Your Baby Can Read.  I am just curious to know what others like/dislike about the program.

As you know, I have your video. There are a lot of similarities. Just curious, are you trying to get ideas for you upcoming videos?

I like that there is a pointer that moves with the pronunciation. I like that there are a lot of kids and animals and no cartoons or toys moving around to music. I like that the DVDs have several popular children songs/rhymes in each one. I can't say that I have any dislikes. My son likes them and has learned how to read tons of words from them.

I just started the Your Baby Can Read program. I like that it has an arrow slide below each word. I didn't even have to show my child what it meant. He just automatically read each word using his finger from left to right.

I wish the videos would teach individual words, then put them in a sentence. For instance, cat, dog, the, and, is, big, black= The dog is big. The cat is black.

Hello Nhockaday,

Not really ideas, I already have them.  Just curious as to what makes people like or dislike them.  Nobody will ever like the same things.  So I am just curious.

I like the pointer, the fact that there are lots of kids and animals in YBCR and the songs. My 2 elder sons love to join in the songs whenver I play the video for my baby.

Not exactly a dislike, but I would have preferred the words to appear at a faster rate, but not to the extent where the pitch becomes higher than normal.

YBCR is very "home grown" in appearance.  For better or worse, it is not as snazzy or refined as other children's DVDs.  My daugter was not at all interested when I first purchased it at 15months... but now at 21 months she enjoys it (Although not as much as Signing Times.).  I have not "tested" her yet... but she does pay attention.  And it taught her "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes."  It is her new dance... if music comes on, no matter the song, she breaks out into "eyes and ears and mouth and nose..."!

What I like the most is the fact that it is a "ready to go" program. It doesn't really require any preparation so it can be used by parents with not a lot of time in the hands. In my case I use that time to get other materials ready  happy  It definetly was a life saver for us, since we didn;t know where to start and didn's want to waste any of our daughter's precious time  nowink I definetly like the arrow going below the word. Something I woul like for LR to do by itself (I know I just need to get a mouse for my laptop  LOL )

We got the program 10 days ago, the first time my daughter will cry for me to turn off the tv, I felt little sad about it, because we invested so much money on it, I felt discourage but the second time(next day) she won't cry and watched for 5 minutes ...and I felt better, The third day she liked it and starti picking out word, vocabulary...I was impresed,it is being 10 days she is being watching the video she know where is her mouth, nose, toes, eyes(she blinked them...so cute),she claps, she waives, she makes the cat sound, she makes the gorilla sign, arms up ..etc. She can do things I haven't teach her before because ybcr. I am really thankful with the program.
It is one more opportunity we as a family have to do something ,interact togheter, we watched the video togheter and make what the video asks us to do...it is fun!!
Catalina watches the video straight for 15 minutes which makes me happy, she is enjoying it, every moring she will point the tv for me to play her baby can read video. LOL

She also loves the songs..she claps and claps when she hears the songs.
I like it because the arrow slides below each word, guides her where to start pronouncing the word.
I like the images are real.
I like the songs.

My daughet is happy with it..if she is happy I am happy and thankful with it.

Besides she loves books, and she won't get tired to look the books it came with the program, and we do the flascards in the table after dinner so everybody has the chance to participate(my husband, my baby and me)

I like that it shows the words in context to give young children an idea of what the word means.  However, the vignettes are so much more interesting than the words my son became an expert at looking up only when the vignettes were on then totally missing the words.

I agree with Linzy.  My son is only looking at the screen when the people or animals are on the screen.  When the words are on he just turns away and looks again when the more interesting parts come on again.  He is getting really good at doing that.  I hope he is learning the words. Sad

Let me start at the beginning, or the middle.  I came across Doman when my fourth child was 10 months old.  I was fascinated and set out to teach my youngest two to read.  I created tons of materials and was semi-successful, because of the time involved in creating materials.  My baby didn't ever read for me, although she loved seeing all the materials.  But at 4 years old, with a bit of phonics from a workbook, my daughter read easier and quicker than any of my other three children.  I really never sat with her to teach her to read.  I was busy home schooling the other three.  She just took off on her own and read.

When I had my fifth, I was determined to use all the materials that I had made.  I also bought YBCR and he watched them and liked them.  I noticed that he would get bored with them, but never with Baby Einstein.  I also talked to many people about teaching babies to read and they were not committed because of the time involved.  Several people that tried YBCR said their child wasn't interested.  I think the words are on the screen too long and the babies get bored staring at them.  It sounds like some of you are experiencing that as well.  We have the words on screen for just a moment to avoid children looking away.

I set out to create videos that have the qualities that make babies want to watch them over and over.  After all, it is through repetition that they learn.  We use some animation of monkeys, puppets, kids music, poetry, children and toys to teach the meanings of the words.

It seems that there is no perfect way to teach babies to read.  Some babies like YBCR, some babies don't.  Some like to learn through the computer, some don't.  Some like flashcards, others like books.  It is really just about having options.  I think as time go on, there will be a lot of products available for parents to choose from.  I hope that we (Intellectual Baby) are contributors to these great products that save parents lot of time and supply them with quality materials.

The result is our first video from Monki See Monki Doo called "Baby's First Words".   It teaches babies to read 40 words and there is a slide show that shows a word and picture that can be used to quickly review the words.

We have 3 more videos scheduled in the first series and then plan to move on from there.  Obviously the things you can teach your child are endless, so the possibilities of what comes next are great.

We have two websites you can check out, www.intellbaby.com and www.monkisee.com.  I also have a blog at www.teachingbabytoread.com, and if you go to www.ezinearticles.com and type in my name, Krista Guerrero, you will see many of the articles I have written.

I think I answered all the questions.  Let me know if I forgot anything.

I went to bed last night after typing my last post and as my head hit the pillow I knew you were going to say Monki See. Explains why I saw your blog there. I recommend considering what Tweedlewink are now doing, and YBCR have been doing for a long time... have international distributors. Infact I have a sneaking suspicion if my memory serves me correctly your website did ask for interested international distributors. It makes it much cheaper to buy products, especially heavier items like flashcards. I'd have liked the doman ones but postage is too much from the states. I'm bored with YBCR at them moment, and so is bub.

My son has liked YBCR from day one and is still glued to it everyday. It is the only thing we watch on tv. Firstly as I'm Australian a couple of things are a little off, such as Chimpanzee is pronounced very weird for us. It seemed to be pronouced chim-panz-ee where as in aust it is chimp-an-zee. Then the dvd says diaper whereas it is a nappy in Aust. They changed the word in the books and flashcards but not the dvd. Colors is also spelt incorrectly for aust we spell it colours. So I think they should just stay away from words that are called something totally different in another country (diaper/nappy) and maybe the different spellings too.

What really works well is the timing of the songs. They seem to come on the moment he is starting to lose attention. Then he's totally refocussed for the next section. The music at the start is fabulous, my son is hooked the minute it starts.

Oh, and the Word Games at the end I wish were part of the menu to select rather than just automatically play.
