Hi - as a mum-to-be in a month's time, I was wondering if I could draw upon the experiences of the community who have purchased any DVD's which promote baby's learning.  All programmes look excellent in terms of teaching your baby.  I plan on supplementing flash cards with the DVDs, especially when I go back to work (as currently my mother is adverse to the Doman teaching methods and would be more willing to show the DVDs) - also I am not keen for my child to watch tv (eg teletubbies, ceebebies, in the night garden etc) if I can provide them with educational shows instead.

If I had unlimited resources I would purchase all of the above DVDs and try them out on my baby - but as the Aussie dollar's value vs US has dropped by more than 40% and the cost of shipping internationally is not cheap I am not able to.

I would be grateful for any comparisons between products.

Thank-you!!

I think you will find all of those highly recommended by many mothers here. If you simply do a search on the forum, or look at the product review board, you will find the threads where other parents discuss all the various DVDs. I have used and recommend YBCR, Tweedlewink, Signing Time/BST.

Thank-you for the suggestions so far.  As my resources are limited (haven't struck the lotto and probably can only afford to purchase 1 set of DVDs)- I was hoping to get some advice as to which of the programs to purchase first, or to make up a league table in terms of how other parents who have purchased more than one product and compared them.

I guess it depends on what you want to teach first. They are all aimed at different subjects. YBCR is a reading program, LP and WTL are language programs, and Tweedlewink is a right brain program with a little bit of other subjects mixed in.

I recommend starting with YBCR or Baby signing Time/ ST. These teach crucial language skills.

you can watch samples of Little Pim at www.LittlePim.com - remember you will be watching with your child (at least some of the time) so quality is an issue. you want something that you will also enjoy, and feel is well produced and has a real teaching method behind it. The entertainment immersion method Little Pim uses engages babies from the earliest age and allows them to absorb the proper pronunciation and rythms of a foreign languages. but don't take my word for it! read testimonials at http://www.littlepim.com/products/testimonials/. good luck...

I'm an Aussie mum also, so have same problem. I have written a comparison between BabyBrain and Wink to Learn under "Baby Brain".  I recommend both, and as they are from Singapore they are cheap, like $16.50 a DVD and Wink to Learn has free postage, BabyBrain has cheap postage if you do a net search you'll find cheaper sellers.

I have Tweedlewink but at the moment wont be buying anymore, as they are VERY expensive per DVD, and Postage is expensive to Australia.  My baby wont watch them anyway. And I'm talking about what it was when I bought them, when the Aussie dollar was nearly the same as the US dollar.  I dont understand how the US economy fails and the value of their dollar goes UP??)

YBCR you can buy from the Aussie site, so postage is local, but try to bid on ebay.com.au... u might snag a bargain.

U are best to look on ebay and see what you can buy locally.  Sometimes you can find cheap DVDs in ebay.com stores, if you buy in bulk postage is more affordable. It takes a LOT of hunting though, as you have to check out childrens dvds and videos in that particular stores search box.

Unfortunately many of the items we'd want like Little Pim dont seem to be selling 2ndhand. Baby einstein comes in a 23 dvd pack on ebay.com.au and is quite affordable. And sometimes you can buy things from Bangkok stores on ebay cheaply, like Baby Bumblebee (much cheaper than from Bumblebee itself, and seem to be genuine article).

Nikita - why won't your baby watch tweedlewink?  Will he/she watch YBCR instead?  It's a shame to have spent so much money on a program which your child ultimately doesen't like!

My son likes YBCR and Little Pim the best. He smiles, giggles and chats when I turn them on.  Lately if I am in the room he points at the TV and babbles like he is trying to tell me what he sees.
He is 9 months now and started watching YBCR at about 6 weeks. He can now do a few of the actions such as "arms up", "wave", "pointing", "touch hair" and "kicking". Last month he started saying his first real words- duck and dog (actually points to a duck or dog when he says the words). At around 7 months he was able to fairly accurately choose the correct word in problem solving activities. Although, he does not do this anymore smile  as he just wants to grab at the first card he sees. I figure it is just his age and have stopped problem solving activities for now.
He has watched Little Pim for a few months now. He really enjoys it. We have the French and Mandarin sets )and the cute Little Pim stuffed toy). I would love to get him the English set so he can associate the words in his home language with the words spoken on the foreign language dvds. I find that there is a great amount of content on the Little Pim dvds. So much more than any others.  However, living in Australia it really is too expensive for now. Does anyone know if Little Pim is distributed in Australia anywhere?
We also have Baby Bit, but he really doesn't seem to like it. He starts to whinge as soon as it goes on so I have put it away for now.

I just did a google search with site:au.

http://burn.com.au/products/products.php?Pl=34%26Tp%3D11&Fd=description&Qy=little+pim  sells Little Pim as a special order.

Thanks for posing the question - as I assumed from my previous searches that there aren't any aussie sites which sell it.

Thanks for posting this question as it has been one that i have been struggling with since i first found this site.
There are so many products out there with good recommendations but as they can be quite expensive it is hard to know where to start.
I was just wondering if there is any reason to get the YBCR flash cards over the ones available to download from LR and LM. Also do you recommend getting the YBCR dvds? Are they better than flashcards slideshows? Thanks smile

My daughter is 13 months and we have LR, YBCR, and Lil Pim (French).

We just got Lil Pim and my daughter loved it from the first moment I had it on and she watched it for about 25 minutes straight which I'm thrilled about.

We really love LR because it's so fast and easy to use and my daughter loves the pictures and audio that are shown with the words.

About 6 weeks ago we started with the YBCR program.  I have to work to keep her focused on the flap books and cards but she really loves the dvd (she didn't at first but now she recognizes everything she loves seeing it all).

I considered getting Tweddle Wink and I just looked into BabyBit but honestly, it's getting a bit overwhelming and I don't want my daughter sitting in front of the dvd player and computer all day.
