Just curious if anyone had experience ( good or bad) with Word World http://pbskids.org/wordworld

We never seen any of their episodes, but I was asked about it by few parents recently, so was wondering about your experience/opinion. Thank you!

I have seen one episode with that frog and I really liked it and thought what a great idea. Thanks for reminder as last time we watched it my dd wasn't quite ready. I wished there was something like that also in my native language. I am going to check if I have put more episodes in my media player and let you know.

The word world site looks cute.
I saved it to our favorites for when my son gets older.

My daycare kids use to watch it when it was on Netflix. I'm not sure how much they got from it, but I could see it being very good stepping stone for children that are already "addicted" to mainstream tv. It's very fun to watch. I doubt you would get the same results as you would with YBCR, but it beats Wonderpets.

Thanks Waterdreamer, I know close to nothing about mainstream TV programs/episodes, so it is good to have an idea from those who have a bit more experience with that! Appreciate it

I don't like it.  They spell the word, then magically say it instead using phonetic sounds to segment the word.

So, "see A tee...cat" instead of "cuh ahh tuh...cat", which I think would be more helpful.

I think I remember reading a review somewhere that some of the seasons or episodes used letter sounds instead of names, do I'd prefer those.

But yes, it beats wonderpets (in my book).  And does show written language throughout the show.  The story lines are fairly involved and would probably be lost on younger children (under 2?).

My kiddo was isolated when it came to mainstream TV too till he was 3, then my step daughter introduced him. *sigh*

My grandson used to watch it and even though they spell the word telling the letters instead of the sound, i think it was good for him that already knew the letters name ( ABC's). He was between 3 and 4 yrs old. Definitely he learned a lot of english vocabulary. The program was a mix of spanish with the words formed mentioned in english. He prefered it that way than all in english (which we could also set).
Now he sometimes play this app on the ipad.

This is my son's absolute favorite show, and the ony one he requests.  He started watching it after he could identify the letters of the alphabet and knew the sounds they make.  I think the show has helped him learn to spell many words in a fun, creative way.

My son really enjoyed this series at one point. We do lots of other stuff so it was hard to say how much he got out of it but I know he definitely learned a few things directly from it because he made specific references to episodes.

For instance, we were in Baskin Robbin's once and he said, "Cakes has an 's' so it means there are many cakes - like on word world."

And another time he was singing the "oo" song...

It's true--the songs are catchy.  My son sang the "line and a circle is the letter B, circle and a line is the letter D" when he was very young.

Oh the Wonderpets, my kids' mainstream media drug of choice!  LOL Lily was exposed to mainstream TV for about 5 months from 9 months to 13 months and that was the one show we were never able to fully shake. Thankfully, now it's a special treat that only gets watched twice a month or so, but the books, stuffed animals, colorforms, and other miscellaneous crap from Grandma still fill my house.  smile

My kids used to love it. We allow them 30 minutes of tv each day and it is in the morning when they are waking up. We liked "you can never have too many oo's" episode. The song was catchy and it helped my son remember how the two o's were pronounced. Plus even if it is not phonics heavy it is literature based and if nothing else is reinforcing sight words.

I cannot take wonderpets.  That show makes me feel suicidal in an angry way.  LOL I am very selective about what my children watch.  Word World is a fun and entertaining.  I will say that I prefer Super Why over Word World.  This show is more interactive and focuses on phonics and letter recognition.  No matter what level the child is at in reading the child will be very engaged.  We watch the shows together.  I do not leave them to watch it themselves, so I always interact with the show to encourage them to do it as well.  They find the letters when asked.  They call out the Super Why letters.  My kids are 2 and 3, and they are piecing together the rhyming and spelling portion of the show.  They have also added a new segment and character to add a focus to add new vocabulary.

I was worried these shows would interfere with the "whole word" method.  It has not to my surprise.  I have worried that television had destroy their accelerated learning abilities.  I don't believe this to be the case.   In just a month of flashing, I have seen serious improvements in my 3 year old's word recognition (over 50 words to be sure).  With my 2 year old, I honestly can't tell, but they both enjoy flash cards.  I can't really keep up sometimes.

What I have learned on this forum is there are a lot of great ways to give your child an edge in learning, and that you aren't a failed mother if you can't use all the great methods or you choose to do it differently.   The one thing I learned is to focus on a positive, loving environment for my kids, and everything else will come in due time.

I watched this on Hulu and then I showed to my son.

I was also curious about what people here thought about this program.

My son liked it. I'm not a specialist, but I have some concerns. For example: sometimes the letters are put in the wrong way so they can start build a word. And then they build it wrong until they got it. For the whole language point of view, I think this is bad, since even when the word is wrong they are already saying the name. Although they say the name, I think it can be harmful even for kids who are understand all the context.

What do you think?

Despite of this, I thought it was good.
