Hi All,

I've been doing the Your Baby Can Read (YBCR) program with my 20m/o son Jonathan since 1/1/09.  I can already see that he recognizes many words on the game cards. His favorite game is when I tape words to the wall and ask him to show the teddybear xxx word. He feels so grown up 'teaching' teddy.

We're on DVD 2 and moving through them rather quickly.  I've reviewed the words in the YBCR program and am not sure how these lessons flow into actually reading sentences / books.  My program came with Word Review books and Slide Cards, but these only reinforce the individual words.  I was thinking I needed to create my own books with phrases only then followed by a picture (Jonathan is eating - followed by a picture of him eating etc).

Now that I've found Little Reader (LR), I'm thinking that will help fill in the gaps to get us to reading actual phrases and sentenances.

Does anyone have thoughts or experience with using both programs or with actually having their child read books after going through the YBCR program?

Thank you!
Susan

Dear NorCalMommy,

I am creating a spreadsheet with the text from all the materials, in order to create couplets/phrases/sentences in LR - and you can use pictures or not.  If you want to use YBCR DVD materials for visuals, you can do so with the software "SnagIt."

http://www.techsmith.com/screen-capture.asp

There are mostly words in YBCR - and a handful of couplets and phrases.  I will use the voiceovers as my "sentences" in LR.  Will keep you posted as I am still transcribing the DVDs.

Oh my gosh Ayesha, you are amazing!  I was just trying to think of the best way to get the YBCR words into stories or at least sentences that I could make a book out of and read to my little one.   Please keep us updated.  Can't wait to see what you put together.  I'm going to try the same thing.  Although I know I'm slower than you at this stuff.

Hello Ayesha,  Seems we hang in the same circles. We've been corresponding on email already. I look forward to seeing your materials.  Again, please let me know if there's anyway I can assist you in preparing them.

Most sincerely,
Susan

Dear NorCalMommy,

I had this strange feeling yesterday that was the case.   rolleyes

For the time being, there is a spreadsheet that I created for retiring a word a day/introducing a word a day.  I used my own word list, but it could be used for any word list.  It helps me to stay on track with a daily checklist and setting up categories in LR:

Will let you know when I complete the other spreadsheet, soon.

Would it be possible for someone to buy YBCR, and edit all audio to record with his own voice in a differente language instead? I wanna teach portuguese to my baby as first native language but we lack product like this in Brazil.

Considering the apparent success of YCBR it's hard to imagine they aren't making versions in every major language.  You could always ask them.

Editing the original videos, even if you did it legally, would be pretty hard.  The only part you'd be able to use is the video portion of the program.

Dear Timmy 1978,

I agree with DadDude.  It is a violation of US/International Copyright Laws.

The company will be making multi-lingual versions and you can contact them at:

http://infantlearning.com/about.html

to find out more.

YBCR is only the 1st (words)/ 2nd (couplets) step of The Doman method.  YBCR takes 6 - 9 months for individual words and the Doman method for the 1st step of words takes 45 days with 200 words.  And then you move onto couplets and phrases and sentences.  It goes very fast and this is why I personally refer the Doman method for reading, although YBCR is nice because the materials are premade - but the pace is agonizingly slow by comparison, yet it does focus more on multi-sensory learning and adds phonics.

The materials that are available here for free are just as good if not better.  I am just creating a spreadsheet to help make use of the words that my children have seen repeatedly.  There are are a few couplets/phrases/sentences from the YBCR materials, and the Doman method is more systematic and incremental in progress from words to sentences.

Hi I have a 10 months old baby and am new to all this... what is the program I could get to teach the Doman method? Also, am interested in getting the LR but can't figure out whether it has the same features as YBCR i.e. pre-uploaded content, plus the ability to DIY or whether it is primarily a software for designing ones's own program but has limited use as a read-made program?  Also, if I also wanted to use LR to teach Chinese, is there like a LR Chinese I could get or will I need to upload my own program from scratch... wondering how difficult it will be... Would be very grateful if you could shed some light on this as it is all very confusing and you seem to be quite an expert! Thanx in advance.

Betty, you can use LR to teach reading Doman-style, or you can adapt it to fit your schedule and your child's interest. YBCR is a pre-made video. You just pop it in the DVD player. LR does have pre-loaded content, plus, we have a vast library of files available to download. It can be highly customized with any selection of words, pictures, and sounds, in many different combinations.  You can make your own files or download other files that interest you and your child. We have also have many Chinese files available in the foreign language section of the downloads.

I hope this helps. If you have more questions, please let us know.

Thanks nhockaday for the info on LR.  smile

Can you give me an idea of how much material is pre-loaded on LR as compared to YBCR's content? Because I can't understand why people are combining YBCR with LR then if LR does the same thing plus more anyways? Also, once I want to start teaching phrases and sentences, I can use the LR to do this then?

Please see the information page for LR http://www.brillkids.com/little-reader/index.php?g=top
You see what comes loaded with it and all the other features.

LR and YBCR are 2 totally different things. I don't see how they can be compared. One is a DVD one is a computer program that can be used in many ways. Sure, you can use LR to show the words that YBCR shows, but there are advantages to having both programs. YBCR is a captivating program that includes video of children and songs. It is very interesting for a child, and you just can't do all of that with a computer program. But with LR, you have the endless possibility of teaching any and every word you can think of, plus couplets and sentences. You can't replace one with another b/c they are so different. I highly recommend having both. The more variety you have in your child's learning material, the more he/she will learn.

I understand bettylondon's concern because I was there once  yes doubting about what program to get. I'm combining both programs and I think is great because not all the time my daughter seems to be up to look at the flash cards, but she never has an issue watching the YBCR video (she loves tv and since she doesn't get a lot of it, she loves it when she can watch).

The other advantage that LR offers for people that want to teach another language (like Timmy_1978) is that you can upload presentations in other languages with native pronunciation. In the case of the words in the different YBCR videos, it depends if someone translates the words and creates a presentation (not copyright issues  LOL ). I'm doing that with Spanish. I took the words of the starter video and put a presentation together and uploaded here. I'll continue to do this with the other videos. It would be great if people do the same in other languages.

Hope this helps a little bit  smile

We use both, but I think we have the wrong kind of monitor or its settings are funny because my child always looks away when the word comes up as if it's too bright or something.  We are currently doing a YBCR in the mornings and a Little Pim in the evenings and LR when we get a chance.

Just a quick FYI - I checked on the YBCR site and they say they are currently translating it to different languages. Can't wait!

Ok I see now that YBCR gives video clips so more moving images than flash cards. Thanks for clarifying that.

It seems to me that I should probably start with physical flash cards + YBCR first and then provided my baby is getting through the flash cards, get the LR as an easier to use, expanded flash card system.

Would be very excited if they bring out YBCR in Mandarin (my first language) and German (my husband's first language).
